Bromeliad Guzmania like sunlight but not direct hot sun that will scorch the leaves, they can tolerate slightly shady areas but prefers warm humid areas and won’t tolerate the cold.
Grab your own multi-purpose Harvest Knife:
UK: tidd.ly/3LjP4f5
USA: geni.us/HarvestKnife
They do have a kind of cup inside the stem where they catch water so you can water it by pouring a small amount down into the cup of the plant where the flower comes out but don’t put too much because if it sits in there for too long it will just rot out the plant. Ideally, rainwater.
Don’t overwater as they can rot if they sit in wet conditions for too long. Mist with rainwater or demineralized water to keep up the humidity.
The fertilizer is not really important as they only flower once in their life and then die, most will already be flowering when you buy them anyway and they don’t take up energy from the roots anyway, Bromeliads are epiphytes which means they grow on other living things like trees the same as Orchids and Tillandsia - what we call air-plants, so it’s not using the soil to take up nutrients, it gets it from the humid air around it. You can buy some houseplant mist that will have nutrients in the mist which are perfect for orchids and Bromeliads.
Not many people know that Bromeliad only flower once in their life and once the flower is done it dies. So many people buy one and are waiting for another flower and then it just dies!
But before it dies it produces pups from the base so you can take them off and you will get three more plants from the mother before it dies.
When the flower finishes you have two options, you could pot it on into a bigger pot and the pups will grow and flower and those pups will grow pups and it will get bigger and bigger over time which looks pretty cool, or you can remove the pups and create new single flowering plants.
I’ve got two here so I’m going to let one grow and see how it looks and I’m going to remove the pups from the other one and have some fun with them.
Orchid bark is best to grow them in, compost will stay too wet for it really.

I did exactly the same experiment last year:) and my conclusion is: if you want bushier and bigger plant leave the pops on the mother plant. The babies grow bigger and faster on their mum and she may even produce more babies later on - like mine did. I don't know about flowering yet, but my guess is that the mother plant will flower quicker as the kids grow faster on her :)

My daughter gave me a Bromeliad with pinkish brachts which have now turned light grey/brown, obviously dead. Not knowing what to do next I luckily found your video which has been a great help, especially about the pups which I now know I can pot on, and look forward in time to seeing them grow and produce their brachts. Thank you!

Thank you!! I got one as a gift today, even though I have a lot of plants I never had one of the Bromelids before. She is beautifully orange red, but her pot is super tightly packed in wet coconut and it did seem a bit suffocating in there. So I am glad my intuition was right. She already shoots out pups on all sides. I put her next to my orchids that also love bright light but nothing direct. I hope she and her babies will do well.

Thank you for your kind comments! I'm so glad you found it helpful. By the way, don't be afraid to give a plant a home, even if it doesn't work out you will have learned and enjoyed it for some time. I think they will last longer with you than most homes they might go to and if they don't sell at the store within a few weeks they often go in the skip! So if you think of it that way you are rescuing them! :-) Good luck with your Bromeliad and keep us posted on how you're doing, if you have any questions just let me know. Andy

They are an epiphyte which means they don't take up nutrients from the soil but from the air and moisture in the centre of the plant, the roots are just to anchor the plant in the pot so it;'s not too essential to worry about the soil really. I wouldn't worry too much.

I sprayed it with 1 teaspoon of neem oil, 1 teaspoons of dish soap, and water all mixed. I also noticed I had a pub growing. But it seems to had died. My brimeliad plant is small black dots. Do you know what could be wrong
@HouseplantHacks
@HouseplantHacks 3 жыл бұрын
The small black dots could be fungus, this can happen from the insect damage. What you have done sounds like the right thig to do, if you can remove the webs and any insects you can see whith a cotton bud with neem oil on this will help, check the underside of the leaves and all the small joints between the leaves.

Yes of course! You need to get to know youyr plant, in different countries with different heat and light levels the watering requirment will be differet, they are reasonably drought tolerant so if it goes a few days being dry it wont hurt the plant too much, but start with once per week and check the moisture in the plant pot, see how fast it dries out, you can tell by the weight of the put and by putting a finger an inch into the soil. Let it dry out a little and then water again. Over time you will get to know when is the right time to water, it's all part of the fun! Enjoy.

Dear Mr. Andy. I loved your very informative video! Thank you from a new subscriber!! I have a question though. I have a Burgundy Bromeliad. It has spines on the leaves and she is beautiful and her bloom is just beginning to emerge from the center. My husband bought her for me several months ago and she has done quite well on my front porch (I live in Florida where it is almost always humid and sunny). I have noticed she is pupping quite well also. So well in fact, that her pups are starting to get large enough to open. This is causing the foliage on my mother plant to get pushed around, bent, etc... However, due to the fact that she is just starting her bloom, I don't want to cut the pups off yet. I don't think leaving her in the same pot for another 3-6 months or so is a good idea either. What should I do? Any tips?
@HouseplantHacks
@HouseplantHacks 3 жыл бұрын
I don't think that the pups will cause the mother any issues, they do push together as they grow but this would be the same in nature and they don't receive our help so I would say it will be fine, they don't need repotting as the roots only anchor the plant in the pot so won't get any issues from that side of things, it sounds like it is very happy where you are keeping it to be growing so well, so I would be happy to just enjoy it and if you get flowers from the pups too it would look even better. If you know how, and can manage to send me a photo on Instagram that would be great, I would love to see it, my username is HouseplantHacks. :-)

what about a diffuser i have a 6" round diffuser that sits next to my bromeliad. should i move it or the vapor that comes out is actually good for it. I live in Henderson, NV, USA. should i add a humity plate underneath?

If it makes mist then it will be good for it as its creates humidity.

I’ve gotten some cuttings, not pups. Do you have suggestions about potting them. Orchid bark? Wood frame with spagnum? Help!
@HouseplantHacks
@HouseplantHacks 3 жыл бұрын
Yes, definitely any of your suggestions will be fine for Bromeliad as they are epiphytic they will grow in most medium, but I'm not sure what you mean by cuttings, Bromeliad can be propagated by division, I'm not aware that they can be successfully propagated from cuttings.

Hi, I have s bromeliad an it’s been near radiator over winter an the top centre of plant where flower should grow has dried out even though I’d kept misting it an no new growth has grown, is there anything I can do ? Thanks.

I'm afraid that if the flower part has dried out there is little chance it will grown another, they are a one shot deal I'm afraid.

So I bought mine about 2-3 weeks ago (it was a gift otherwise I would just go back to the same nursery myself) and complain they sold on after it flowered and in its dying cycle as I never got to see any flower) and the colored leaves are Already turning brown. But no pups have grown. Will the pups shoot out after the mother plant flowers and starts to go brown or do you think the nurse took those pups away from me for themselves? 😮 Is this plant useless now?

It's just a case of giving it some time to recover, it can take a few weeks, give it some light and some water and see how it goes, if it still has energy it will start to grow again. Good luck.

I bought one today from the store, the leaves are green. The middle part where the red mother flower is it’s browning. The flower is still low though.

It might have been burnt buy the direct sun, that might cause browning of the leaves. Hopefully it will continue to grow and flower for you.

My one didn’t flower properly, but the tip of the flower started changing colour as if it is dying. I’m not sure if I should cut it off totally. My husband had over watered it a few times and it was placed in a shaded area. I’m going to repot as the soil is soggy !

Thank you for the video! How long does it generally take for the pups to flower?
@HouseplantHacks
@HouseplantHacks 5 ай бұрын
It depends on several factors, from my experiments they seem to flower quicker staying with the original mother plant, within 6 months sometimes.

@HouseplantHacks

it's a possibility but if they are on their way out quickly its unlikley that they will have time to produce pups. All you can do is keep them out of the sun, give them a little water and hope for the best.

Hello! I got a bromeliad from Walmart, they were about to throw it away. I did not know what it was at the time. It does not have any roots but it's very green and it's generating new leaves/spikes (don't know the name of the leaves). It looks like the top of a pineapple but no roots. I had it in water but I don't think it likes it. I am going to put it in well draining soil and put it in my restroom. Is that how it will grow roots? Thank you for this information, from El Paso, TX. God bless
@HouseplantHacks
@HouseplantHacks 3 жыл бұрын
Sounds great! That's good of you to rescue it from the dumpster! :-) Yes, free-draining soil will be fine and your restroom should have nice humidity so that will help. They would normally have some roots to help anchor it where it grows, it's hard to say without looking at it but time will tell if it will be ok. You can also pour a small amount of water into the centre of the plant where it would normally collect rainwater funnelled down from its leaves, this will help hopefully. Good luck with it and keep us posted on how it gets on. :-) Andy

I have one and I'm reluctant to separate the pups - there are at least 4, maybe 5, but the plant looks quite handsome as it is and I fear that removing the pups will make a much less attractive plant! Maybe if the mother plant really takes a turn for the worse. Although I do wonder if they grow better after they've been separated or if it doesn't matter.

Hi, I think I may have root rot. I’ve had the plant for about 3 months and had leave it alone for about 2 weeks so I watered it (by putting water directly into the soil). When I came back after 2 weeks, it’s leaning. So I think it does have root rot. Is there anyway I can correct this before it really dies? The flower is still there.
@HouseplantHacks
@HouseplantHacks 3 жыл бұрын
Leaning towards the ligt is quite normal when you have it near a window, just turn it the other way aroundvand it will straighten itself up, then turn it once per week and it shoudl grow evenly. I doubt the roots have started to rot by watering once heavily and then left for two weeks, it should be fine.

Good video thanks. I was given a Guzmania as a house warming gift and the main flower has died now, so I have cut it out. I can see I have one pup, but on the other leaves it looks a bit dry and crusty, so doesn't look very healthy. I have been watering the plant weekly, but just wondering if there's anything I can do to make the leaves healthier?
