This follow-up video shows the results from an earlier video in which I used four different methods to start to root fig cuttings. Watch to find out what happened! Fig tree series: • Growing Figs:

I have had success with all methods. For me it’s now what takes up the least amount of room and grows fastest. Been using the fig pop method for two years now. Besides the two things mentioned above they don’t need to be watered or at least often and keeps the gnats out.

Thanks for your comment. I don't understand what you mean by the "fig pop" method. Can you explain this?

@@prentishancockgardening look up “fig pop” on KZfaq or Google. It’s a nice way of handling cuttings if you have a lot of them.

Hi Jeanette, thanks. I've now looked it up, and seen a couple of videos. There was one young fellow who had lots growing in pots in crates and I was thinking, "this guy is worse than me!" He'll only be able to use all of those starts if he's got a 10 acre field! It's an ok method. But I don't need to use heat mats. That's just a waste of energy. I'll be doing a few more fig videos in the coming months. I've got lots of things to show. Hope you're doing well?

Very nice results! Keep us posted on how they grow. What variety of fig cuttings were these?
@prentishancockgardening Жыл бұрын
I don't know the variety names of my fig trees as they've all come from local trees as cuttings. Though I am keeping score on how many different varieties I have, and I have about 8 so far.

I would have been sorely tempted to plant cutting #2 along its length to see if that green bud would grow straight up.
@prentishancockgardening Жыл бұрын
Hi Jeanette, that would be a good experiment. It would be reasonable to plant and fully cover both sides of the bud with a couple of mounds and watch the bud shoot upwards. I hadn't considered that. My only concern would be that the trunk it turns into would be too heavy and would keel over. But, that could be countered by building up the soil around the trunk as it turns into year-old wood, which would strengthen it. So yes, entirely feasible. It's nearly two years on since I made these videos, so come the Spring equinox, I may follow-up and do a video on how these have grown. Hint: they're doing quite well!

@@prentishancockgardening I’m glad they’re doing well for you! I’ve got one in water, one in soil under a dome, and two in paper towel in a cool spot. Time will tell!

@@prentishancockgardening I just potted up two of my fig cuttings! The most successful was planted in potting mix and placed an water bottle and covered to provide greenhouse like conditions. The second one I’ve potted up was done like the one you had in closed bottle, about a 1/2 inch of water and capped. It began showing evidence of roots all up and the stem but finally decided to put out longer side roots about the middle of the cutting. The cuttings wrapped in paper towel and in a ziplock bag and those sitting in just of jug of water I have purposely kept cool. It’s still too early to put a bunch of potted cuttings outside so I’ve kept them cool to delay fast growth. So far it’s been a successful trial!

Well done Jeanette. Great to hear your propagations are doing well. Please keep me posted on when you progress the paper towel cutting in the ziplock bag? March is just around the corner and warmer weather is approaching quickly this year. Best wishes!

Wonderful experiment! I love trying new things myself. We’re going to be taking some dormant Fig cuttings this week and I will definitely use a couple of your ideas!
