Propagating petunias is easy! Sometimes, letting the growers in the nurseries get the plant started is the easiest way to start, especially in some varieties of plants. Learn what to look for before purchasing plants that you may want to bring to your home, read those labels! Heidi will show you a simple method to get more flowers from one purchased plant than a whole flat of another. Getting the color and variety you want is now, not limited by the packaging you can find at your local nursery. You will be able to propagate your favorite petunia or other flower variety and bring more color and beauty into your garden. You will also see how to mix your own soil blend for propagating plants. Keep gardening!

At about 11:45... when you pull the flowers off make sure to get the kallax below the flower where the seed is produced. You don't want the energy to go to seed production. I just learned this today so I thought I would share💚

How interesting! I didn't know about the honey for root growth. Great video! I've been wanting to grow some petunias that aren't the same old colors. I will have to get some from my local nursery & try some propagating. Thanks for sharing!

Very informative. I love petunias but only bought 3 small plants, as I felt that they were overpriced. Great tips here to stretch your dollars and have a full beautiful garden. Thanks Heidi!

You don’t have to buy petunias every year. The seeds drops into the same pot when dried. Come next spring they comes back. I let them catch a little root, then gently dig them out and put them where I want them.

Some petunias need to be propagated by cuttings because they have no seeds!

Not every area stays warm enough for those seeds to grow. My area gets so cold that annual seeds don't survive in the ground

@@secoyare We did this last fall. Just set the pots aside for the Winter. Mostly out of laziness, these are large ceramic pots and heavy. All 4 pots are loaded with plants now, can't see the soil. These are all going to be left to grow to 5-6"s, then some cuttings will be put in water, others into soil. Supertunias do not create seed and can only be propagated from cuttings, all other petunias create seeds. However, if hybrid may not come back year 2 the same color. My blue ones came back this year a deep purple and red ones came back a deep maroon. Free flowers, I'm fine with that. As to cold killing seed. We live in Maine, gets well below zero degrees often. No idea why yours aren't coming back. The drain edge of our patio puts up dozens every Spring. And this year in pots.

I've tried dipping the cut stems into cinnamon to help roots sprout. It seemed to work, but I'm a first year gardener so I may have just gotten lucky.

How long will it take for these to start growing flowers again? I live in the northeast, so I’d be afraid that by the time I had beautiful flowers, the temps would just ruin them... lol

If using honey instead of the root grower, would I just paint the honey on the nodes using a q tip?

It was obvious that this young girl pulled off the flowers but left the seed pods on the plant. This defeats the purpose. The plant may root anyway but will also put energy into producing seeds. Someone please show her how to dead head a petunia correctly. Keep gardening! We learn more as we go along.

Ah, young girl...quite the complement, over 5 decades here. This was to use the main plant to incorporate new plant material into multiple planting areas, to grow, flower and seed onto other locations. More seeds the merrier.
