I cut branches in late summer and they survive near a window all winter just on plastic cups full of water and end full of roots, then i pot them in a mix of sand and potting mix in March, and in May i plant them into the garden, that way you plant clones every year, and always have quite big plants read to replant in case its needed.

Can I root suckers from Determinate varieties? Or does this only work with Indeterminates?

Have you ever tried putting them directly in soil and watering them in?

Yes, I have started rooting them in pots. The water method will work but they can undergo a shock when being planted. Rooting in soil takes out the extra step. I've found I prefer the lazier methods as I progress in my gardening. I haven't tried planting them directly in a garden bed but there's no reason it couldn't work if it had enough moisture and sun protection to get going.

Yes, the water can become murky over time so it's good to refresh it.

if my tomato is already fruiting and I'm water propagating it, should i cut the fruit off? my plant is indeterminate

Yes. Remove fruit and flowers. They will be taking energy that could be going towards root growth. And those fruits won't mature much more after the cutting is removed from the mother plant.

Mine are super droopy. Is that normal?

If it has more leaves left on it than it can support they'll be drawing energy from it. Or the water level could be too low. I've had aphids hiding out on some of mine before aswell.

@@CaseysGarden They've started to spruce up just a bit but I think the issue is definitely too many leaves. They were some fairly mature suckers that had some decent growth already. Going to trim a bit too see if that helps. Thanks.
