In this video I balance a propeller at home using simple tools to show it can be done, it’s not too hard. Take your time and check balance regularly. Also show the painting process I use.
It’s a great way to bring old props back to life or check balance of a prop.
Hope this vid helps.
Cheers

@25hpboatracerman

Thanks Champion, It really doesn’t matter what shaft you use, as long as it is perfectly straight and round plus fits snug inside your prop bush. I made some long cones that slide over a shaft that centre my props on my shaft. Cheers 🍻 Aussie Boat Guy 😎

Thanks for the video. Do you think this prop took damage/ leading edge wear that put it out of balance or would it have been this way from the factory?

@25hpboatracerman

Hi mate, Thanks 😊 I have two cones which push into the hub and that centers the prop, each cone has a spring that pushes against the cone to keep them in the hub. You can use any straight shaft as long as it is tight in the hub. Cheers 🍻 Aussie Boat Guy 😎

It’s a specific Tohatsu colour. The black is actually a really very dark blue. There was a few shades of grey they used over the years too. I have not found an off the shelf colour to match unfortunately.

Hi champion, I have a number of different shafts, some old outboard drive shafts, some that have been turned that fit snug in a number of propellers. The ones that done fit snug I have a shaft with two sharply shaped cones that slide onto the shaft and press into the hub centering the prop. Cheers 🍻 Aussie Boat Guy 😎

If it’s stainless, is there any benefit to painting it? Could it just be left shiny bare metal?

Is there a functional reason why you paint them, or is it just to make it pretty?
@25hpboatracerman

@25hpboatracerman
@25hpboatracerman 2 жыл бұрын
Sure, I will have to wait till I have to straighten one though so might be a while. A slight bend is not that bad to straighten but badly bent I don’t even bother as I worry about the stress and strength after it’s straightened. Cheers

why even paint the prop? its aluminium right? wouldnt rust anyways or whats the benefit?
@25hpboatracerman
@25hpboatracerman 3 ай бұрын
Hi Mate, Will not rust but will oxidize in the salt water. Painting the alloy props is worthwhile, I do polish some alloy but they need constant polishing, basically after an outing. Cheers 🍻 Aussie Boat Guy 😎

I thought that you were😢 supposed to check that all the pitches were the same too. So you said you sand down not the pressures side. Can you just say to sand down the part that faces the front or the part facing the rear. Thank you. That way people can number the blades before they take it off. I thought the pressure side was the back of the prop so I checked. Material removed from towards the tip of the prop will have more of an effect on the balance. Remove material with a file from the front of the blade ONLY, i.e. the convex side which is the same side as the drive dog slot.
@25hpboatracerman
@25hpboatracerman Жыл бұрын
Hi Mate, You can check the pitches for sure with a bevel if you are at home. Thank you for pointing out some extra things I could have added to the video. I do clearly show which side to sand though. With props it is either pressure side or low pressure side of the blades. Hope it was helpful anyway. Cheers Aussie Boat Guy 😎

@@25hpboatracerman Professionals have curved blocks with the pitches and can see if any blades are bent. Every step is important for the best results. I did enjoy watching your video. You seem to be a perfectionist just do not want you to miss a step. You keep saying do not touch the high pressure side that seems to be the back of the blade and the front of the blade appears to be curved which you can adjust. Are you supposed to check if those curves are the same too or is that going to far. Lol. I guess you can just get a brand new prop and make a mold of the pitch and the outside curves. I heard of motors from Yamaha coming with some no name propellers and when a Yamaha propeller was used it worked a lot better. Wonder what the difference is between a good and bad prop. From trial and error you must know how to shape it to get the best results I will watch your video again

@@tommytriglav5181 Yeah, true I would love a set of pitch blocks. I do however check the blades with bevels and gauges before I start, I will add that into the next video I do on props. Cheers 🍻 Aussie Boat Guy 😎

@@25hpboatracerman I was looking at the sharrow prop and to me it looks like two three blades narrow props at a different height to give 6 total blades. Can you make one like that? No need to connect the ends. Call it the Aussie prop. Market it and sell it could make a lot of money. It could be like a 3 blade prop with the center part cut out and then maybe the pitch of the remaining blades changed. That would probably be the easiest way to make one. What do you think. That way you could get regular cheap props cut out the center part then charge a lot lol
@25hpboatracerman
@25hpboatracerman Жыл бұрын
@@tommytriglav5181 Hi mate, Yeah those sharrow props are pretty cool. I have thought about that principle (even years before the sharrow appeared) I could not cut the centre of a stock prop though, the blades need to be offset in the flow of water to catch the low and high pressure water coming off the first set of blades. I am always thinking props though, waiting for another revelation to hit me 🤷‍♂️ Cheers 🍻 Aussie Boat Guy 😎
