The framework, specially the nose looks a lot like the shinkansen 0, i could say the Schienenzeppelin was the true first bullet train

Way ahead of it's time. This is the original high speed rail. I'm guessing the tracks were not ready for the speeds it could travel.

They could have geared the engine to run a rear axle through the stations / yards, at slow speeds and throttle, then switched over to the propeller and high throttle. They also could have had some sort of fairing/cowling to cover the prop, as with a Murphy fan boat (swamp boat). Perhaps they ran out of money, or there was insufficient demand, or a lack of dedicated high-speed rail.

It was ultimately converted to a hydraulic drive connected to the wheels in 1932, and scrapped in 1939.

@kostyaz Couldn't they add train cars ("carriages") to the front of the engine? Also, how did the propeller train damage the train tracks?

There are shots of what appears to be a test track (straight) in the film, if I am correct where was this? Plus how much of the success of the SVT 877 is owed to the Schienenzeppelin?

Was Dr. Hugo Eckner involved with this design? The framework and streamlining remind me of the cabins on German dirigibles of the same era.

Background music is dark and creepy. Why?

@badreality2 , because it can't take carriages with it, also it damages train tracks.

How come the propeller train idea wasn't commercially successful? They would have been the fastest trains for the time period.
@RACookPE19786 жыл бұрын
Too inefficient for the speed available on the tracks. See, "if" the tracks were "perfect" (no sway, no jerks, a smooth ride at long distance with constant speed on level (no intersections) tracks) THEN the speed could be maintained with a propeller drive. But the 1930-1932 tracks were rough and uneven and bumpy. So the ride was terrible when the ride was at high speed. Look at the people inside when the train is at speed. At low speed, when the the ride could be maintained at tolerable levels, the conventional trains using friction drive (and later using diesel trains even more!) the conventional drive was much, much more efficient. Today? Prop's are still less efficient than electric motor-to-rail drive on the "good" Spanish-French-Japanese-German dedicated high-speed rail lines. I enojoyed my rides on the high-speed trains between Madrid and Barcelona - but, if I wanted to go elsewhere = use a rental car or low-speed train.

Also the BMW engine used in this prototype was soon required to provide Luftwaffe (Nazi Air Force) because imminent war. So not allowed to propulse trains, those could do be propulsed from any other engine system as usual.
