Thank you very much for the great video. I wish we had those manhole covers here in the states around the house. Most of the houses like mine have the sanitary pipes buried inside the poured concrete slab. most of the older houses with cast iron pipes, the pipes have collapse and the house floor and slab had to be cut open to replace the cast iron with PVC pipe.

Another clear & concise explanation for a job most people should be able tackle themselves; keep them coming please. When I jetted mine, I discovered the blockage was caused by significant amounts of rubble (cheers builders!!), so a rodding kit & worm screw helped with the 'non-organic' solids. Finally a cheap (ebay £10'ish) USB drain inspection camera gave a good visual confirmation that everything had been cleared. Not used any of it since, but all still on the shelf just in case!!!!

Here in the US, all drains in the house tie together, usually under the house, then 1 main drain to the sewer. I can advantages and disadvantages in either system. Yours has a lot more pipe, but can be easier to see what part is clogged, but then with a lot more pipe, that also increases the chance for roots or clogs. By the way, in our covers, they usually have brass or stainless screws.

Great video as always mate. Just be careful when jetting towards the house, can be very awkward to explain if your other half is sat in the bathroom and you mistakingly jet a little too far…! If you can, you’re often better jetting towards the sewer - there’s no issue then if you go too far. Top video tho, will help a lot of people I’m sure.

If you don't have a larger, gas ( petrol ) powered pressure washer, your local tool rental store probably does. My local store has quite a variety of them. Yes, they are a bit unwieldy but a lot of these rental stores will deliver and pickup the machine. If they don't rent these cleaning tips, just buy them along with some extra hose length, make sure the fittings will work with the rental store's machines, and get to work. I haven't checked what it would cost to have it done professionally, but I suspect a visit or two from the pro's would cost more than buying a good basic pressure washer which you could put to use doing other stuff around the house.

We had a long run too (20 or so meters). The problem with those is it's inevitable with a bit of settlement for the pipe to drop in the middle. I guess there is a length after which best practice is to concrete it in. In the real world the consequence is, especially if there's a joint, for stuff to get caught. Didn't know you could get powerwasher attachments, I always just used a hose. If there is a drop in the pipe, if you run water down it, at the last man hole the water will appear in waves rather than a constant stream. PS a video on how to get THAT grass please! 😂

If the pipes are blocked outside, it's worth squeezing a bottle (or two) of cheap scented and coloured shower gel into the drainage from inside the house. It's easier to spot the flow of water and also masks smells near the covers.

An absolutely invaluable piece of kit, has already been used several times over the 2 years I've had it. Very useful tip about the tape a meter from the end! My 10 year old house is interlinked with next doors that was built the same time so plenty of opportunity to get messed up. The drains come across the back of each house from the main bathrooms and kitchens and then join up and travel under the path between the properties to collect connections from the front and then into the main drain. & Were lowest and closest to the main drain through the village so proper fun can happen 🙄

Doesn’t that mean though that you’ll continuously keep having blockages though if the fall isn’t right (due to settlement). For what it costs to buy a jetter hose for a normal power washer would probably sort the drain fall problem with some new sections of pipe and couplings. That’s just my opinion I guess

Good video and the cleaning hose is a great bit of simple kit to do the job. Cheap coke is a great pipe cleaner also. Acts like soda and vinegar. Without sounding too negative, ITS claim to be cheaper than screwfix, sorry I debunked this claim even during their sale. I checked three items on my wish list. All are far higher priced on ITS. Not to sound negative one example is evolution table saw rage. Another being evofury which is on amazon for 129, so buyer do your own research. Most ppl don't and I sold a tripod set of led lights yesterday for 10 quid more than I bought them, 4 months ago!

New builds have a bit more sensible layout, my 1950's build house (house built very well btw) sewer system is a nightmare of sorts as it does not go direct to a main, instead I have neighbours outflow going through my property! No real problems in the 10 years Ive been here BUT I have made sure I have a full bells and whistles house insurance to cover ALL eventualities, including water supply OUTSIDE my boundary's.

OH HO! I think this may be true with my home (built in the 50s)! How do I determine? I'm afraid it's a bit late to check with neighbor (relations have not been the friendliest). I've snaked 4" sewer line in the past by removing the toilet - with success, but I'd like to try the sewer clean-out in my backyard. But, I wonder if the clean-outs run between properties? Maybe I need to play it safe and remove my toilet and run the jetter there? relatively confident that it won't divert into neighbors property?

stick a usb endoscope/boroscpe down see whats in the pipes, they can be had cheap now. Also measure flow speed of the water compared with a perfect 1 to 40 fall, might give some indication of what fall they are at. Neighbours of mine, told by a plumber to only do no1 from now on downstairs, scandalous what some of these builders get away with as no one has clerks of works or proper site managment any more.

I have the same question. What did you come up with? What PSI is recommended (affordable). thanks (anyone?)
@stevem1081
@stevem1081 5 ай бұрын
Depending on how big the roots are, but what the pros use runs 4000 to 5000 psi and around 8 gpm(30 lpm) then a nozzle that will do that starts at 400.00 USD and up. If the nozzle doesn't have the proper flow it is no good, so putting it on a small washer won't work. If you have the very fine hair size roots, my 3000 psi 3 gpm unit with a reverse turbo nozzle will clear them.

I suppose 2 reasons - 1) none of my 'drain pipes' on the house go into this system - they go to a soak away and 2) in the construction industry we tend to refer to any pipe the takes away foul water as a sewer and pipes that take rainwater as drains so I'm used to referring to them like this.

For me this is a diy job too far! If you have a new house your waste should not be getting blocked unless there is incorrect usage, it was all tested and passed by a building inspector. If it ain't broke don't fix it! Btw I was advised on a long run to flush that toilet once every couple of days to keep the flow going. I would also be careful about any drains shared with neighbours, they are called lateral drains and belong to the Water Company. If these get blocked they will come out and flush for free, it is a good service I have used it myself before. Hope this helps.
