It does turn into ice, and in doing so, the molecules spread farther apart and it expands. :)

water does turn into ice the molecules are the ones expanding and becoming less dense

It's because of hydrogen bonding. Water has the special property of expanding when it freezes into ice. This means the water molecules are spread farther apart when it's a solid than when it's a liquid. Because of water's polarity, the O atom of one water molecule is attracted to the H atom of the next water molecule. When it freezes, the polarity causes the water molecules to "lock into place", in an arrangement that leaves space in between each molecule. Not all substances expand like this when they freeze.

thanks and the story went: oxygens you are so negative. then oxygen replied and you are slightly positive. Hydrogen and oxygens were now frozen in place and both were delighted, then when the situation got hot, hydrogen had to allow oxygens to leave to the biosphere. This is the tall tale of why we as animals need water to function because without their relationship skills and soul companionship we would just cease to exist as chemical compounds. 🧞♂️🧞♀️ MEGATRON ☣️
