55 years ago, I took my first lesson at 15.5. Got hooked, and at 16, I decided I wanted to become an airline pilot. I needed a 4 year college degree then. Got my ratings and a BS. Everyone said I had to get my CFI to build time. I never got my CFI, rather I got a job ferrying new Cessnas in 1975. Built good time doing that, then Cherokee six freight, then copilot on part 91 Swearingen Merlin 3. Corporate jet jobs not like it is today. Then I flew barons for corporation for a year. Then I got f/o job on beech 99’s for commuter airline, for 1,000 hours. At 2,500 hours, no Jet time, I interviewed in 1977/1978 with United and American. Got hired at AA at age 25.5. Finished 40 year airline career 5 years ago. Retired 4 days before my 65th birthday. What a great career I had. 28,000 hours, 18k hours and 28 years in the Boeing 767, all over Europe, Middle East, carribean, south America, Hawaii, Alaska and lower 48. My advice; skip cfi and get right seat jet experience, then hopefully Captain. Airline is far superior to corporate jets!

There are really only two ways to fly and get paid well for it. Airlines or Military. 🤑

@@jamesburns2232 don’t forget corporate. That can be a good job on the jets, pay is good, but not as sure a bet, as the airlines (they sell the jet).

I’m 37 with a wife and kid. My wife is a flight attendant so she’s gone 3 days a week. It’s hard but I’m getting it done. Definitely achievable.

Love the show. I was blessed to skip my cfi as well I got my comm and two weeks later was flying right seat on a Lear 25 and I never looked back. I went from 250 hour to right seat of a Lear. I now have 13,000 hours and 9000 pic jet. I also went capt the same day I hit my 1500 hours ATP hours my Lear 35 type checkride was my ATP ride same time. And the next day I had a trip as a captain FLL to PHL back to FLL.

Great video, thanks guys. I'm a dual rated Commercial, instrument, CFI and sea plane pilot. For the last 20 years I've been doing utility work, helisking and rescues from Alaska to Colorado. I just wanted to talk about hovering in the clouds. I've had jobs where I hovered several thousand feet and it's no problem as long as you have visibility. The reason you can not do it in the clouds is the same reason a VFR (and sometimes IFR) pilot loses control. It's the lack of spacial orientation. The instruments are not sensitive or precise enough to be able to hover. The number one rule for helicopters flying VFR in bad weather is , Always have a reference point on the ground. If you lose that, you better get on the instruments immediately and commit to IFR. Best of luck if your flying a VFR helicopter.

I completely agree with Jordan about becoming a lineman at a local FBO near you. As a lineman myself the exposure you receive to professional pilots comes in so handy and you learn so much from talking with them even if its for a few minutes. Every now and then we'll have a pilot come in from a repo leg to pick up passengers the next day and they will stick around for half an hour on the ramp chit chatting with you about the industry and give valuable advice. Keep in mind a lot of them flew part 121 before moving to 91 or 135 so you'll get insight on what they like/don't like about each facet of the industry. Sometimes the pilots will even let you on board and give you a tour of the entire plane simply for expressing interest and asking questions. I actually had my first flight lesson today and I plan on keeping my line service job throughout training so I can continue practicing my networking skills and also because the job is just so damn enjoyable!

Perfect topic. Worked for me! I got my CFI just for the experience and accomplishment, but skipped the teaching world. Now flying a King Air and Citation Citation after writing a letter (yes, a letter with a stamp!) to the chief pilot. Network, network, network!

Wish you guys had more subs, this channel is gold for people interested in pursuing an aviation career. Biggest issue with this industry is looking at it from the outside makes zero sense to newcomers. Instead of using acronyms and CFR codes you two make everything simple! Was a huge help to me before I started flight school and needed some clear information to push me over the edge. Keep up the great vids!

Would you pay 50-100k in flight training, for 20-35 year career as airline pilot, making average of 250k/ year? It’s a no brained, IF you have the passion and fortitude!

This is awesome, I'm coming up on 40 hours and on check ride prep for my PPL currently. Unfortunately life got in the way and I had to take 6 months off from training so it's taken me a year to get to this point. After watching all of your videos and knowing what to expect I plan on knocking out my instrument as fast as I possibly can, then time build up to 250 hours for commercial.

I’m glad this young man has maid it to where he is now. I hope to be able to fly and get my PPL at some point. Although I’m getting to the point where medical me are going to come up more often than they would for younger guys as I’ve been trying to absorb as much info as I can. The biggest hold up is time and money to pursue it while maintaining regular bills and a wife and child…

I’m not a checkairmen on the challenger 300/350/3500 typed on DA900LX 757/767-300 Lear 25/35 45/75 sea plane caravan on floats. I really got lucky was a 767-300 capt at 28 years old. A CFI is an amazing thing to have I’m sure I personally was in the right place at the right time for my jet Opportunity .

Good stuff! Sadly the CFI route is what makes the most sense, then you get people who treat it like "serving your time", as if everyone should be a CFI. No. There are plenty of great pilots who have no place as a CFI. And that is quite all right.

I can attest to this. I had a retired AA pilot as a CFI. Worst CFI ever. That experience alone is big motivation for me to become the best instructor I can later. Currently finishing up my instrument rating end of this month!

@@amandamacaviation he ended up getting fired by the school so yes, ended up with another very decorated retired airline pilot (UAL, NASA, USAF), who was the complete opposite of the previous instructor and was super passionate about aviation and teaching. Got my PPL with him!

I don’t mind being a CFI, but I would love to fly some turboprops or dual engine airplanes. I feel like the more experience the better, and it would be interesting to have practice flying PC-12s in IFR even without getting paid for it

Everybody thinks they want the shortcut. “Skipping the CFI saves time” “flying the Cessna getting sweaty all day”. Life has taught me may lessons one of them is not to be afraid of sweat. Another one is that there are no shortcuts in Aviation. Skipping your CFI robs yourself of perhaps the most valuable training you’ll ever get. The experience of teaching others how to perform the fundamentals of being a safe pilot. When sh*t hints the fan those lessons may save your life and those of your passengers even when you’re a Shiny Jet Pilot. TM. Glad it worked out for this guy not saying he’s a bad or unsafe pilot but the message needs to be taken with a large grain of salt

This might be a question for some of the people in the comments. Do any of the accelerated flight programs allow you to skip over the CFI/CFII courses? I love coaching/teaching, however the idea of instructing pilots isn’t something that at the moment I would care to do. I would prefer to fly pipelines, tours, mapping, etc. To be fair, I am 8 hours in to my flying career, so I’m still working on my PPL. Getting a flying job is still a ways out for me, but I’m always looking to the future.

Just to clarify I work for a major FBO at an international airport and I cant say that the experience is that helpful towards this goal. My main interaction with pilots is marshalling the plains in and out and exchanging salutes during sendoffs... most of the time if I greet them or wish them a good flight during checks they either ignore me or just give a nod. Other than that its pretty brutal work and these large commercial providers leadership is far separated from us. Consider that these planes typically carry around 4000lbs of cargo under the passengers that has to be unloaded and re-loaded, neatly stacked in a 3.5' high cargo area... 5 to 8 planes a day.

Wanted to clarify a miss statement by your young pilot, Jordon. A helicopter hovering out of ground effect (OGE) is possible with a properly configured helicopter. Normally though, one wouldn’t want to hover as in the clouds one is most likely gonna get into Spatial disorientation. This is what caused Kobe and a good portion of other helicopter accidents in the civilian world. There are helicopters which have 4 axis, auto pilot, and with properly trained pilots and crew that can do these zero visibility approaches to hover. This type of flying it’s usually done an offshore or and offshore search and rescue operators.

My daughter is 15 and she has about 20 dual hours. She loves flying planes and want to make it a career. However, she is getting recruited to college for basketball. But she is only entertaining the schools that have aviation programs. I wanted to know if it is possible for her to play a sport while pursuing a degree in aviation to become a pilot? I am aware that you guys may not be high level athletes. Just want to set the pace for what she has to look forward to. Thanks in advance!

Great information, but just a little feedback. Try to not cut the guest off as much and just let them tell their story. It makes it hard to watch and really takes away from the information they provide. For example when you asked how he would do it all over again you stopped him before he could even finish

It’s actually cheaper to get you private SEL and then add-on the helicopter eating than it is just going straight helicopter. It’s crazy.

Seems like he isn’t telling the entire truth about his helicopter experience. How do you go from professional helicopter pilot to stopping and working FBO. Then talks about how he wishes to get into a helicopter again someday…. I don’t get it??

Don’t skip the CFI it will make you a far better Captain later. People that look to overstep this have an attitude that is harder to deal with, an arrogance for sure. You learn so much about flying and people in general by teaching. If you refuse to have a CFI, might might be a complete D
