Just watched this video and I can't believe there was no mention of how expensive home insurance is. We were quoted 18k per year for wind, flood, and home on a 900 square feet home on the canal in Marathon. I can vacation three times a year in the Keys for 18k and in a larger home!

As for the fishing, which no doubt is one of the main reasons many people want to be in the keys. I was a very experienced fisherman and had a master captains license before i moved to the keys. I lived there full time in a new home i built on Duck Key for 10 years. A pretty typical time frame for a great number of people who move there. I worked during the busy season for a well known tarpon guide in Marathon, and later for the Hawks Cay Resort as a charter captain. There will be times for a week or more at a time when you will not go out due to the strong winds and rough water conditions. And it will make no difference what size your boat is, even the very large ones will remain at the dock. And there is no place at all to hide from the conditions, reason being the water conditions will be so poor that its simply a waste of time to attempt going. No doubt when the conditions are good it can be a very nice and good place to fish, especially for those having a smaller boat. On the other hand there is no fresh water fishing at all in the keys, whereas in other places of Florida there are endless opportunities for that. Same goes for salt water fishing, the keys are for sure not the only place having very good fishing in Florida. My advice would be not to move there just for the fishing. As for hunting, there is no hunting in the keys. In fact it is illegal to even discharge any firearm there even for target practice. Certainly not the case in other areas of Florida.

Let the world be aware, the internet situation in the Keys is spotty at best. Despite new improvements, the slightest thing will cause all to crash leaving you unable to communicate with AirBnB or VRBO hosts (who will deliberately not answer when internet is down and claim phones are all internet based and therefore are “down”). It is very much an OFF THE GRID LOCALE to this day. If you rely on good internet speed to do your work, the Keys are not your friend. On the flip, if off the grid is your thing, then pack up and come on. We couldn’t even get a shop owner to ship an original painting that was larger than 12x16 that we wanted to purchase. The Pony Express down there regularly damages original art carefully packaged for an inland destination, soooo….Also there is a whole separate and wonderful living situation in KW with large, wide quiet streets, beautiful Hemingway-esque style homes, and calm composed folk long there, calmly and quietly enjoying all that island life can offer. #ConchRepublic

Great video except for one thing. You mentioned all the great beaches. The Keys are coral islands and with the exception of man-made beachs at resorts, there are really only 3 public beaches in the Keys (Marathon, Bahia Honda and Key West). But otherwise a great video.
@sunshinemorning67942 жыл бұрын
We used to have natural Beaches until they built Condominiums all over them. We used to have an abundance of queen conches and sea shell's as well. We even used to have several verities of parrot's in massive numbers. Most of the houses are now owned by people who don't even live here year round. They cut the fruit trees down. They put pea rock all over. The tourism is ridiculous, they litter, urine filled plastic bottles on the side of US1, also fast food bags,they won't even let you get on the highway to go to work. The grocery stores are always out of coffee cream, amongst other things. I've watched the Keys,dramatically change from a quiet, peaceful,luxurious green shaded cool breezes place, to a strait up monopoly board. It sad what has happened to this place I don't know about the resorts water pressure, I speaking as a home owner and native, The water pressure is really bad. I wish people would plant back the fruit trees and stop building, There is not much left to build on. At one time we all knew each other and were a close nit community.

Like so many others, you are a temporary visitor here, not a full time resident. The unintentional misinformation contained herein is evidence of your lack of full information about this place. You’re sure most of your information is accurate, I assure you, it is not. The reason I don’t mention specifics is because they are too numerous to mention. It’s innocent enough but you really should get the facts instead of assuming your casual observations are accurate. Spreading misinformation isn’t helpful. Interesting for me as a full time resident for over thirty five years but the facts you state simply aren’t totally so. Here’s one example. I am an avid lifelong gardener. You state that it’s growing season year round because you assume because there’s no frost, things grow year around. Many native plants will survive but gardening simply isn’t achievable much of the year because it’s too hot, the sun is too intense. Plants cook instead of grow. Also, since there’s no native soil, most growing is done in pots which is very limiting. Growing season here is more accurately between November and May. Just one example of the many inaccuracies. Maybe next time you pose as an expert, you’ll actually speak with an expert or have one edit for you?

Rising sea levels will affect the entire planet though. It won't only inundate coastal areas. It will turn fertile inland areas into inhospitable scorched desert, turn the frozen tundra into rainforest, etc. It will change weather patterns all over the globe forcing people all over the planet to leave their homes behind :)
