So let me guess, you are here for one of these two reasons - 1. You want Duckweed for your aquarium and want to know more about this interesting plant or 2. You accidentally get this super annoying plant into your tank and have no clue how to get rid of it? Well, duckweed definitely is a perfect example of love-hate relationship in the World of Aquatic plants. Some people like and enjoy it, some totally hate it and does not matter which side you represent, I hope you will find this video useful and learn something new about either keeping, or removing this plant.
Make sure to check also my other videos in Aquatic Plants series, in case you like easy to keep and hardy plants that do not need additional CO2:

Also one can use a breeder net to “skim” the duckweed off the water surface as the flow pushes it around, then just lift out the breeder net.

On point my friend!!! As you mentioned there are many pros. I didn't realize how nutritious and packed with goodness it is! I also didn't know that it's been used in human consumption too 🤔 thanks for a really great tip on creating food with it for our fish 👍 I just thought the fish liked it 😂 and people always get covered in it 😂 it's always great to learn something new. I don't have duckweed (yet😂) I would just prefer to keep my floating plants bigger and more manageable.😁 If I ended up with duckweed I would be okay, it wouldn't be the end of the world 😂 thanks for great information and video I really enjoyed it! @undersurfacechannel
@undersurfacechannel 2 жыл бұрын
@waleed aarf hello! Honestly I do not have experiences with degree of salinity and duckweed at all so cannot really tell you about that, but as far as water pH goes, it can pretty much accept both hard and soft water so I would not really worry about that :)

I'm one that currently can't keep duckweed alive. I've come to realize that my tap water is extremely nutrient deficient. I managed to save literally one tiny piece of duckweed and have nurtured it to grow with heavy use of aquarium fertilizer. I'm now going to use it as an indicator for how my fertilization levels are so I can reintroduce some other aquarium plants without killing them. I'll likely end up regretting my choice to introduce duckweed, but for me right now it will be very helpful. 😊
@undersurfacechannel
@undersurfacechannel 3 жыл бұрын
@Renee Roszkowski definitely! Serving as nutrient levels indicator is one of the great advantages of Duckweed... I can clearly see on my tanks as well which ones need additional fertz and which not just by looking at duckweed on the top :)

I have a very strrong love / hate relationship with duckweed. My fish love it. I keep mostly Betta and Loach, and I have found that they much prefer 'shaded' light over the full bright aquarium light. Win! I hate it. Put hand in aquarium, recieve plant coating. And the amount of times I have had to clean it out of a filter is insane! Uuuugh! Buuut fish like it, so it's worth it. (Plus, when I first got the duckweed, it came with free bladder snail eggs, and out of pure stubbornness, I am not going to let this plant win. And yet, meanwhile, under the same conditions, I cannot get java moss to stay alive.)

I like the looks of duckweed.I spent time in the Louisiana bayou and loved the place.BUT,I let the duck weed cover the surface of my water and the fish began dying off rapidly.Then I realized the toxic gases need to escape from the water surface.I removed enough duckweed to where it only covered about 60% of the surface,and my remaining fish were fine. I still have duckweed in the tank after 3 years,and keep it under control covering only 60% of the surface and all is well.

I have nothing in my fish tanks except fish ! From past experiences, I have learned that aquariums are wonderful environments for so many organisms to not only thrive but to thrive out of control. So for me, no snails, no plants, no worms, no shrimp, etc. Just fish. In my platy breeding tank, I'm learning that even fish can be too successful, :-)

@Eva Karbanová I haven't tried eating it, but maybe we'll find somebody who did :D I have observed exactly the same with ramshorn snails... they crawl up, grab one duckweed and sink to the bottom to eat it... sometimes when they are too small and they do not have enough weight to pull it down, they kinda float around in mid-water till they eat enough of the leaves that it sinks... it's so funny :D
