For many years, I refused to consider adding plein air painting to my artistic practice. It wasn’t because I didn’t know what plein air painting was. (If the term en plein air is new to you, it’s used by artists to describe painting outdoors, on location.) I knew only that my plein air paintings showed the essence of my lack of skill more than the scene before me, and that didn’t seem likely to change any time soon.
Why would I take a deliberate step back from the paintings I was achieving in the studio to paint indistinguishable messes of color in conditions that were often not comfortable for the artist?
It’s funny, because as a young artist, there were many things that other artists did that I didn’t consider to be relevant to my own artistic journey. It seems like it wasn’t so much that I needed to be converted to their way of thinking as to recognize that maybe I misunderstood the purpose of the assignment from the beginning.
You don’t have to be a plein air painter to be a good painter, and I’m here to set your mind at ease on that. The goal is always to work within your limitations to create art that brings you joy. How freeing it is to realize that while another artist might be a passionate advocate for one method, growth can happen right where you are at, and it can and should feel achievable and enjoyable!
Over the last few years I’ve started to rearrange my perspective on plein air painting. My plein air excursions at home and when I travel are bringing new insights into the creative process that have helped me to continue growing as an artist.
What I heard artists say: “I can always tell which paintings are created from photos and which are created from life.”
What I heard: Studio paintings are inferior.
What I heard artists say: “Plein air painting is the best way to develop your artistic skills and ability to see.”
What I heard: Without plein air painting, you can’t grow as an artist.
What I needed to understand: Plein air painting provides a way of experiencing your subject that can add richness and depth to your paintings, IF you combine it with your existing creative practice and allow it to serve you rather than becoming its slave.
I’ve learned that when plein air painting became playful, detached from the obligation to depict what I saw, and used to emphasize emotion and experience over detail, plein air painting became mine. My tool to help me grow as an artist, yes, but also to experience my world as a participant, not taking the view and inserting it into my painting, but sharing my own individual perspective as an offering to the time I’ve invested in that plein air painting session.
I’m choosing to see plein air painting as a gift. Taking the time to give myself to what I see, to create an intentional process of engaging more deeply with the place in which I find myself. Most of the time, I don’t see a masterpiece on the end of the brush, but I do see an experience that I savor more deeply for the time I’ve invested in physically connecting my body to the place, and the place to my art.

Plein air is about looking different... Blessed are those who can see beautiful things in humble places, where others see nothing. PS: That palette just became better and better as we went along... Cool... Always nice to see other artists at work, setup and everything.

Fun video. I was surprised your brush was not more protected in your pouch with your sketchbook and palette. I keep mine in a plastic toothbrush container with some sticky tack at the base. I push the handle into the stick tack so it keeps my brush in place within the container and protects the tip of the brush. I also use a wrist band to wipe my brush on when painting,

Thanks Angela. I just got brave enough to go outside in the world to paint. I've been 3 times this summer. But I usually have my grandsons with me. There are a lot of distractions and boy the paint dries fast . And I like not painting exactly what I see but put together elements I like that may be far apart. It's definitely different. It's as if I'm learning to see with better eyes. Thanks again Angela.👍💜

Hi Angela, this video of yours was on my stream this morning. I love the outdoors and painting! :-) Nice to meet you, your daughter, and your dog, and of course the watercolour work you do - love plein air as much as studio too. I'm steadily getting better at watercolour painting, and with this quick intro - because of lots to do today - will be watching more here and there as days and months come. New subscriber! Btw, I hadn't seen the nifty portable palette and backpack/sitting stool, thanks for sharing.

Wonderful to year your beautiful area in summertime! So lush and green.... I'm packing for a car camping trip, next week for 6 days, and GREAT idea to take two sketchbooks. I also have a few, halfsheets of loose pieces of 140lb, cold press, paper, just....in....case. Joyous plein air painting, at a mountain lake, on Northern Vancouver Island, for five days.

Awesome! Was out painting with my daughter last night. She did great. :) I've only tried watercolour outside once but the sun was too hot. I couldn't keep any moisture in the paper and the masking fluid dried so hard that it took the paper off with it. I had no idea you were a fellow BC'er. I'm hiking Juan de Fuca next month and will bring a little watercolour kit with me. Very inspirational video! You made it look easy and I loved what you said in the blog about painting the feeling. That helps tremendously!

thanks so much for sharing your plein air experience. Lyme Disease from ticks and West Nile from mosquitoes are a harsh reality around here so I generously use bug spray on myself, my clothes, my chair, and my pack prior to even leaving the house. I also wear a bug repellent hat, lately it is a bug repellent buff headband, they work great in keeping the bugs off my head. I know folks are concerned about chemical exposure with these bug repellents but these diseases are difficult to effectively treat and many times results in chronic painful joint and heart problems. Canada does not even approve the use of the diagnostic test for Lyme that we use here in the US, so too many people with lingering serious symptoms are left untreated among my friends up there.. So far I am one of the rare farmers here that has not contracted these diseases, so weighing costs/benefits for me results in deciding in favor of effective repellents. Sorry for the rant, retired critical care nurse here. I use the same palette and love it.
