hey y’all! today’s video is all about the pros and cons of teaching english in korea. this is more applicable towards the epik program, but it can still be useful for other programs as well. my intention isn’t to scare people away from applying to the program, but these are some things that can happen. as always, if you have any questions, leave a comment below or message me!
**please make sure to look at epik's website as they tend to make changes to the program every intake. some MOE's/POE's decide to make changes as well, so some things may/may not apply to some cities/provinces. www.epik.go.kr/contents.do?contentsNo=56&menuNo=286

Omg, the last minute is something I am feeling HARD right now. I applied for the Spring intake and, of course, am still waiting to even know when I'm leaving. I am planning a trip to the Philippines with my friends right before Korea (so fly to the PH and then Korea right after), and I can't even tell them a date to start planning. And my family legit doesn't even believe that I am actually going to Korea because I don't have any information about the program, which is nerve-wracking! So I am sitting here, nearing February, just a wreck from nervousness. UPDATE: Finally got my placement, Gangwon. And now the Visa application and trip planning is stressing me out even more LOL. If anyone sees this and is near Gangwon, lemme know!

You made some really great points! I actually enjoy desk warming for the most part. Why not do what I do at home and get paid for it lol. I do get bored sometimes. I wanted to point out that with hagwons the benefits are the exact same for the good hagwons! If you aren't getting those benefits, find a different hagwon.

I have a frustrating experience. Not knowing where to begin or hitting a plateau can feel demoralizing and make it hard to hit the books and study like you know you should…Having friends from other cultures makes me more creative. In fresh ways about space and how people create their own world and environment. It is best way to connect between creative thinking and cross-cultural relationships!

I'd be interested to learn more about what responsibilities you have outside of those teaching hours - 22 teaching hours is a LOT!!! I am a teacher in the UK and we generally teach 18-22 hours per week, but the average UK teacher works 50-60 hours a week in total due to all the planning, resource making, printing, marking, assessments, meetings, CPD, lunch duties, form time, parents meetings, report writing, data tracking, etc. What else do you need to do during your "desk warming" time?
@auroraseyets8516

I hated desk warming while teaching English in China, the China surprise was definitely a thing, the very different Chinese school breaks or getting a day off in the middle of the week only to have to make it up on Saturday and/or Sunday (that was mindblowing). It was such a culture shock.

most public school teachers are given 26 days (seoul i believe is still on 18). my summer vacation was 2 weeks long, and winter 3 weeks. i planned my vacation days to be during red days (public holidays), so i was able to have very long vacations. i went to the USA for both of my vacations, easily could have traveled to multiple countries :)

I'm curious about your overall teaching load. I hear the teaching hours is equivalent to teaching full time. I saw the teaching hours online, but not sure of the concept in reality. I saw in a video that someone teaches at 3 schools with EPIK (not sure if its in 1 day or everyday). I understand everyone's experience is different, but hope its not a daily exhaustion or if you get enough breaks for a healthy teaching load.
@heyitsanne
@heyitsanne 4 жыл бұрын
MayLee ify you are teaching at multiple schools, like 3, it’s unlikely that you will go to all three in one day. most of my friends that teach in 3+ schools go to maximum 2 a day, so either half of a day at both or most of the day in one. to be honest, my teaching load isn’t really much of a “load”. i have it pretty light compared to others i know who plan their entire lessons, worksheets, etc. i just have to provide an activity and/or games for all 3 grades i teach. and of course, if you are in different schools, they may ask for different things/have different work loads. you are teaching in the classroom for 22 hours but the rest of the time if for you to plan, prep, etc. for some people, that means dedicating all of that time to prepping. for me, i don’t need to use all of my extra time to prep. hope that was helpful! :)

Hi! I was wondering if you had anything to say about what it's like going into and leaving the program already as a credentialed teacher? I'm almost done with my undergrad and am heavily considering this program but I also want to get my masters and teaching credential. I'm mostly worried about losing "momentum" after getting credentialed to go teach in Korea and then what it might be like to come back. I've also thought maybe it'd be good if I could do EPIK before getting credentialed. From your vlogs and advice videos, teaching English in a foreign country sounds like an amazing experience.
@heyitsanne
@heyitsanne 3 жыл бұрын
hi! teaching abroad is a really amazing experience that i would recommend to anyone thinking of doing it! if you see yourself possibly teaching abroad long-term (not just korea), i would say get your teaching license (and maybe possibly masters). this will make you more competitive for other teaching jobs and programs that are not EPIK-and other countries as well! with a masters you can teach in a university and get higher pay. a teaching license can get you a job in an international school in many countries (some [like korea] require teaching experience in your home country as well). i hope that was somewhat helpful!

hmmm does the 26 paid vacation days include the 14 national holidays? if not omg 40 days of holiday sounds great!!!! and is it socially acceptable to take sick days as an epik teacher ~ i heard that some co-teachers hate it and expect you to come in sick
@heyitsanne
@heyitsanne 5 жыл бұрын
no, they’re separate. but those holidays are government holidays so they may/may not align with your summer and winter vacation days. it honestly depends on your school and co-teacher about sick days. if i need to go to the doctor or i am clearly not really well, my co-teacher insists on me some hours off to leave early (i usually insist i’m okay to stay). they do have to put it into the system and get approval from the principal and vp (at least at my school). so if they dont approve it then 🤷🏾‍♀️ but yeah, it’s true that the culture here is to show up even if you are sick. some schools will let you go home, some expect you to perform at your best 100%

After hearing these benefits I kind of considered Epik! However, I hope you can address my worries first. My only issues are that I'll be a college junior studying abroad in Korea for a year and that's great, but I worry about the birth crisis if I come after graduating winter 2020. I'm trying to graduate early (fingers crossed winter 2020), but even then, each year the birth crisis continues to worsen. My Korean friend told me about grandmothers enrolling in schools to keep them open. I've heard of rejections for teaching English due to the birth crises. That's my concern for the JET program in Japan too.
@heyitsanne
@heyitsanne 5 жыл бұрын
there has always been a decrease in schools available/positions available through epik, but there is always still a need for english teachers, so there will be teaching opportunities by the time you graduate, don’t worry. i will say that epik isn’t the only public school program, and it’s not the only way to teach in korea. if epik doesn’t work out for you and you really want to come, there are other ways :) the great thing about you studying abroad in korea is that you can travel to other cities and see where you would like to live! yes, you don’t always get your placement but it’s still nice to know more than just seoul before coming here haha i’ve heard great things about the jet program, but i never looked into it because i knew i wanted korea :) i hope this answered some of your questions and concern; i don’t know everything about epik so i hope this was somewhat helpful!

I have a question about housing. If we have a partner are they allowed to stay with you or would your housing be cancelled?
@heyitsanne
@heyitsanne 4 жыл бұрын
it depends on the type of partner you have, and really the landlord. if you are married, you can apply to epik together but there is no guarantee you will live together or even be placed near each other. if you are not married, the likelihood is even smaller. if your partner isn’t with epik, you can ask for the housing allowance instead and find your own apt. it’s going to be expensive though because it’s most likely you will have to put down the security deposit (usually thousands upfront). but i believe you can still apply to epik and let them know you have a partner and they will keep it in mind, but epik really only wants those that are married living together. i hope that wasn’t confusing lol

Hey thank you so much for replying. By any chance do you know if they would need to be an English teacher as well or would it be okay if they just do their own work that is not related to teaching English?

no, they don’t have to be an english teacher

isn't desk warming the time you should spend planning your lesson?? I wouldn't call it desk warming though, that is valuable time you can use to design and plan lesson, you can also create teaching material..
@heyitsanne
@heyitsanne 3 жыл бұрын
when you finish planning all of your lessons because you have a lot of time, that’s desk warming. also keep in mind that not every teacher has the same responsibilities. some teachers are expected to just make games and activities, some are expected to teach and plan the entire classes with little to no help from their co teachers. every situation differs. but usually you have plenty of time during summer and winter “vacation” (aka your school is off but you still have to come in and sit (desk warm))

Hi,, please can a Nigerian teach English in South Korea??
@heyitsanne
@heyitsanne 4 жыл бұрын
it is possible, but unfortunately south korea only accepts teachers that have done their secondary to university education from these certain countries (us, uk, canada, new zealand, australia, ireland, south africa). maybe there is another country besides korea where you can teach

Hi with regards to the earlier question,what if I schooled in Ghana West Africa,but have a TEFL which is affiliated to a UK and Canadian school? Do I stand a chance to teach in Korea?
@heyitsanne
@heyitsanne 4 жыл бұрын
hi! i answered the question in a comment above. but basically, if your secondary to bachelors schooling wasn’t done in one of the countries listed then it’s technically illegal for you to teach english in korea under the E-2 visa. maybe they could have a different type of visa i’m unaware of, or they may change the regulations, but this is what i know. also you can research it just to make sure

this is from EPIK's website Be a citizen of a country where English is the primary language EPIK teachers must be citizens of one of the following countries: Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, United Kingdom, United States, or South Africa. **Under the CEPA agreement, Indian citizens are eligible for positions if they meet all other requirements and hold a teacher's license in English. Please inquiry with the EPIK Office at epik@**korea.kr** for more details.*

@heyitsanne
@heyitsanne 4 жыл бұрын
i'm not sure if you would be able to qualify, unless your secondary education and degree are obtained from a select list of countries (ex. usa, canada, uk, ireland, aus, nz, sa). tefl is required for almost every teaching job in korea, unless you hold a teaching certificate

so sorry i'm now seeing this! youtube never notifies me of comments :( it honestly depends where in korea you live. if you are in a city, then it's not hard to find a gym. rural areas is very unlikely or one location. i'm not sure on the cost since i'm not a gym person 😅
