I know I'm only in high school but I'm trying to set a career in teaching English in Korea or Japan. Is there a program like EPIK in Japan? Does the program help you settle in? How did you adapt to a new setting? Did you meet friends that's from Korea that speak english?

Melody on the Move hi, I just started watching your videos and I love you. very informative and encouraging..well i am from Bangladesh and I actually wanted to do the TEFL course so I will be doing it in Thailand from Asian College of teaching (ACT). it's a 120 hours in class course which will start on 5th June 2017.though I am doing the course in Thailand but my dream is to teach in Japan.thats my dream country.so pls suggest me do I need to do the JET program If I want to work in Japan?

JET is quite similar. You teach in a public school in Japan as a co-teacher. The benefits are a bit different. Not quite as good, but yeah and then there are other companies there that place teachers. INTERAC is one and there are others.

Wow. I'm at a point when I'm getting very serious about going--filling out applications, getting all my paperwork in order, etc.--but I didn't know about the randomization of location. That's quite honestly a large con that I'm going to have to look into more, considering that, if possible, I would like to be in a larger city (not somewhere rural). How often would you say people get their "preferred" province/are satisfied with where they are based on their application? Anywho, thanks a bunch for you videos! They're very informative :)

This is pretty far out, but thank you for the video first off! :D Second, I am going to be studying abroad in S.Korea for my Senior year of College and was hoping to go back to possibly teach when I get done with college (hopefully not too long after I graduate that May of 2018). I was wondering what the timeline sort of looked like? About how long it took you to get your TEFL and how long the whole process and application took. I am trying to figure out if I should try to get my TEFL over the summer or do it during my last semester at home once I come back. Then after getting my TEFL applying for the EPIK program and find some job in my waiting time. What are you thoughts? Thanks again and sorry for the long question!

Thank you for posting your experience! It was very helpful. :) I am older and just got my masters in TESOL & Applied Linguistics. I don't know anyone in Korea but this program sounds so nice since it's structured & safe for different reasons. I'm debating about whether or not I should go through EPIK or just apply with an online recruiter. I don't have any paid teaching experience but now must pay off large student loans so I must focus on making as much money as possible. Some of the issues that were mentioned could pertain to other teaching jobs, couldn't they? Does anyone have any advice for someone like myself who wishes to teach abroad but doesn't know if I should go through some sort of agency or through EPIK?

I probably won't do a video dedicated to it but it's basically 10 days of going to classes and learning teaching skills, learning Korean culture, learning how to speak Korean (they have different classes for different levels), you will go on a cultural field trip, and then the last day, you will find out what city you've been assigned, how many schools, and sign your contract.

So I'm not graduating from college until May and I'm planning on taking my TEFL classes online within the next two months or so but I was wondering if you knew if I would still be able to apply for a teaching job if I haven't met the requirements yet but will by the time I would have to start. I'm so nervous because I don't want to sit around not applying yet but I don't know if I just will have to wait until after May when I graduate and then go hardcore into applying to be able to start that next February or if I can start applying now/soon with the assumption that then I would be able to start working in August. I know that it would be different if I did private schools but I would probably feel more secure with going through a government program. Btw I love your videos and they have been super helpful!
@MelodyAlisa

Hey! yeah you can apply without a TEFL as long as you'll have it completed by the time you begin teaching (that is the requirements for the EPIK program).

Hey! Awesome video, subscribed! but just a few Qs :P 1. I'm concerned about the fact you brought up that you teach at more than one institution. Surely that's unreasonably difficult to manage and travel to different locations? And surely the pay would differ depending on institutions? 2. The TEFL course; I know you said yours is entirely online, but apparently institutions there are increasingly asking for atleast 20 hours in class training. Can you confirm if this is true?
@MelodyAlisa
@MelodyAlisa 7 жыл бұрын
Hey thanks for subbing! To answer #1 it is difficult but having 2-3 schools is becoming more typical in the EPIK program. I know some teachers that have 4 schools, which is just insane to me. For each additional school, we do get paid 50,000 won more each month up to 3 schools (so max 150,000 won extra). And #2 I have heard this to be true! Per the EPIK website today they say that in the future they may require 20 hours of the course to be in person but it's currently not required. So it may be in your best interest to get a TEFL course that has a portion in person, just in case!

Rosie Perez She said before she got an interdisciplinary degree emphasizing in health studies so basically in school terms it's sort of like a science type of degree with no emphasis on which field. Usually you'd take another 4 years to actually work with this degree (meaning masters) however she decided to teach with it instead. She didn't have a teaching degree though so she took a course online so that she could teach oversees so she wouldn't have to go back to school.

And I love to watch your videos👍 I was really interested about black people who lives in Korea, that is why I found your videos! because my bf is black! Yeah, we are interracial couple 😊 And today I was surprised! You living in Yeong-Ju! Right? Omg!! Yeong-Ju is my hometown lol and still my whole family lives in there. Before I was 20 I used to live in Yeong-Ju! You know, Yeong-Ju is really really small city and I thought a bit boring haha. Why you choose there? I am so curious 😉 And if you don't mind can I ask which school do you work? If I was in Yeong-Ju we could be a friend 🤗 Haha anyway, I hope you enjoy your life in Korea!

I'm thinking about doing the EPIK program, but I have a slight stutter that makes S and ST words hard to say, and I think that might take away from my ability to teach students. As I grow older though, I should gain more confidence and therefore stutter less overall, and could structure my lessons around different words, couldn't I?

Hi, I'm a senior speech therapy student. You should go see a speech pathologist who specializes in stuttering so you can learn strategies to compensate for stuttering. Don't let that hold you back!

Hey Melody! I had a question about having to work the English camps, I thought that English teachers were supposed to only work five days a week, so did they pay you more for the camps during the weekend, or is the contract that they mail out to you different from the contract you sign after orientation? Please let me know! I'm flying to Korea tomorrow so I can start being a teacher as well!
@MelodyAlisa
@MelodyAlisa 8 жыл бұрын
Hey! Yep, I got paid for the weekend English camps. My biggest complaint about the situation was doing the camp at all - regardless of the pay because the requirement to work on weekends is NOT in the contract. But water under the bridge at this point as the camps are over! The contract they send you is the same that you sign. And welcome to Korea!!
