Josh explains the best way to protect the soft, young bark against critters in the winter is to get a protective sleeve over the bottom of the tree. It will protect it against deer, mice, and other animals who may be looking for an easy meal.
Trees still need moisture in the winter. To help them get the water they need put down a nice layer of mulch as well as spray the plants with a herbicide spray for dormant trees.
