A great alternative to traditional goatskin gloves are heavy grade nitrile or PVC, like a thicker version of the ones used by mechanics, with a cotton liner underneath. That gives good dexterity and the cotton liner absorbs sweat enough to retain some degree of comfort and distances the nitrile glove from the skin by enough to stop a sting going far enough through the glove to reach the skin. For feet, nothing beats rubber boots reaching up the calf with the suit (or thick jeans) tucked in and taped. That will keep most other stinging or biting insects, ticks and mites out as well, and those may be present around the apiary, particularly if the greenery has grown up a bit. The same footwear is good for mowing the grass in an area sufficient to give good access to the hives.

Good advice. I’m lying on the couch right now with my foot raised and ice on it because I got stung yesterday and my foot has ballooned. I wear a full bee suit and gloves, socks and Skechers. There I am, placing a Hopguard strip in hive four when someone takes umbrage and finds a 1/8” gap between my shoe and the bottom of my bee suit. My bee suit that flops around my shoes and has an elastic band that keeps the leg down, except when it doesn’t. Short boots from now on.

So sorry to hear that! We hope your foot feels better soon. Hopefully these tips limit it from happening again!

If your reaction is that severe, I would go for longer boots (tuck the bee suit in) with a turn of duct tape around the boot cuff. I hope your foot goes down quickly and without lasting effects (except maybe more caution).
