What makes a llama a protector of livestock?
Llamas protect sheep primarily through their natural instincts and behaviors. Here's how a protection llama fulfills its role:
1. Alertness: Llamas are highly alert animals. They have excellent eyesight and acute hearing, making them quick to detect potential threats or predators approaching the flock.
2. Aggression towards Predators: When llamas sense danger, they become protective and may exhibit aggressive behavior towards potential predators. They are known to chase away intruders, especially canines like coyotes or dogs, which are common threats to sheep.
3. Vocal Warnings: Llamas communicate through vocalizations. They can make loud, alarming sounds to alert the sheep and other llamas about potential dangers, prompting them to be on high alert as well.
4. Kicking and Herding: Llamas are physically capable of using their strong legs to kick and defend the flock. They may also use their herding instincts to gather the sheep together, creating a more challenging target for predators.
5. Bond with the Flock: Over time, llamas develop a protective bond with the sheep they live with. They consider the sheep as part of their herd and take on the responsibility of safeguarding them.
6. Intimidating Presence: Llamas are larger than most predators that might threaten sheep. Their size and appearance alone can serve as a deterrent to potential attackers.
By utilizing these natural instincts and behaviors, protection llamas can effectively guard sheep and other livestock, providing an additional layer of security on the farm or pasture.

Hi there, I'm from TX. also. The royal white sheep are hair sheep. Mr. William Hogg from Tx created that breed back in the 90's . He crossed st. Croix and Dorper sheep. In my opinion the royal white is the best sheep in the USA.
