Prototype #2: Combat Thick Vegetation - TLT Longtail Mud Motors

A new concept for protecting your flange bushing against thick and heavy vegetation on your Thai longtail mud motor: Prototype #2
One issue people combat when running a Thai long-tail mud motor is having vegetation build upon the inner shaft in between the prop and the flange bushing. This is bad because it stops water from getting to the flange bushing. The flange bushing needs water to cool it. No water = hot flange bushing = melting/swelling/excessive-wear.
So we need to stop vegetation from collecting/building-up there.
Prototype #2 is a 1.25" PVC pipe that will slide over your longtail shaft (mine is an SPS Swamp Runner yours may differ depending on the brand but the concept is still the same).
Again, 1.25" PVC pipe slides over the shaft and covers the space in between the prop and the flange bushing. Holes will be drilled on the end closest to the prop so that water can still EASILY get to the flange bushing.
It can be secured to the longtail shaft in multiple ways. Main goal: stop it from sliding front to back.
a.) cut a slit in the PVC pipe and use a hose clamp to tighten the PVC pipe on to the shaft
b.) using a screw to mount it to the outer shaft
c.) [my preferred method] get a 1" pipe {instead of 1.25"} cut a slit down the entire length, then spread it, slide it onto the shaft, and then release it onto the shaft so it clamps itself onto the outer longtail shaft.
I will not be able to test this any time soon because I am in the process of creating the Backwater mud motor review. If you are able to create this, let me know on this mud motor facebook group - / longtailmudmotors

Fyi, if you ever find yourself needing a larger screw type hose clamp and you only have some of the smaller size ones, you can completely unscrew 2 of them and couple them together making one large diameter one. About 10 years ago I figured this out when stuck on the side of the road with a busted radiator hose about 100 miles from anywhere on I-20 in TX one time. That truck still has those 2 clamps on the upper radiator hose to this day.

Haha yes sir! I wanted as small of a profile as I could get. Having two of the screws seem like it would really hang up on grass, but yeah, it's definitely do-able!

Good job bro. Be sure to secure the bushing. With it rotating it will not perform the way it should. With it rotating, weeds can still wrap around it and the angled holes are a must to be in a certain orientation. Picture the prop in the water. You notice it isn't vertical or perfectly horizontal. So with the holes angled toward the prop (drilled from outside to inside, running toward the prop) at the bottom, water will be directly forced inside the hub, while the top holes (drilled toward the bushing fin outside to the inside), water will be pulled from the props proportion, therefore the water gets pulled from inside the bushing. This should actually cause a greater water flow that if it didn't even have anything. Also, be sure to put the screw side of the clamp on the top. Less contact of vegetation

Sounds like some fun!! I'd like to see how it ends up. I know the 13hp and kit is too much for my boat even after re-enforcing the transom. I still get some play in the transom when I digging through the mud.

I use the spacer concept and it works without issue. I never needed to really test this, it was just an idea for others to test if they wanted to play with it, so no I never did test it fully. The double-thickness PVC spacer is what I use. This is the PVC spacer video - kzfaq.info/get/bejne/hsmAratmnq20YYk.html and this is the 3d printed one - kzfaq.info/get/bejne/iKyoqsxo3rO0ZKs.html. How about if you cut it in half long ways and hose clamp it on, then you can loosen clamp and remove it to use prop puller still. Just a thought.
@JTgatoring
@JTgatoring 4 жыл бұрын
Great idea and that would work. I am leaving my a little short so that way I can slide it towards the engine to reveal the inner shaft so that I could use the prop puller, but if you decide to make it long where you can no longer slide it then that would be the way to go! Solid idea 👌

I have not run or tested this yet. I'm in the middle of rebuilding my transom on the boat. I was able to make it weedless with the first weedless spacer I made with doubling up PVC pipe. I just couldn't use the prop puller to get the prop off. So if you aren't changing your prop out a lot, the pvc spacer will work.

Would it help at all to put a lil anti-sees on the shaft where the prop goes? Would it hurt anything?
@JTgatoring
@JTgatoring 3 жыл бұрын
You could, but the prop is held on by friction so I don't know if it would help or hinder. Something to try. You can always wipe it off. I may give it a try late on once I get the sps back on the boat

@@JTgatoring isn't there a keyway to keep the prop from spinning? Im trying to do all my homework before buying a longtail. All your videos have abben a big help. Thank you
@JTgatoring
@JTgatoring 3 жыл бұрын
@@bandjoeoutdoors9089 There is a key way but it's more of a guide than anything. They are very shallow and don't stick up that much. The anti-seize would help you get the prop off if you keep changing out props, but most people end up finding a prop and sticking with it unless there is a big weight difference for a certain purpose. If you break the prop, they normally break all the way off by cracking straight down the hub, or by breaking off an ear, and at that point (if you don't have a prop puller) it's easier to break the prop off the rest of the way. And the prop is really held on there by by the tapered shaft. The force on the prop continually pushes it up further onto the taper of the shaft and that's how it holds. It is not a straight shaft with a key. It is tapered with a key where the key guides the prop on and the taper holds the prop.

would having grooves wether in a straight line or rifled like a barrel on the inside help to creat e water flow?
@JTgatoring
@JTgatoring 4 жыл бұрын
Possibly. I do not know if it would be more beneficial to have an increase in water flow or not. I know that without this PVC pipe on the shaft the longtail will pull a good amount of water up into the shaft. I haven't tested this yet, but this PVC pipe may not even effect the water flow all that much or it may really decrease it. I planned on testing it with a cheap Delrin bushing because those melt pretty easily when they don't get enough water.

Hey man. Love your vids! Just had a question for you. I just recently bought a long tail kit, I have the predator 670 installed with it. I took it out for the first day yesterday and it was very difficult to keep in the water and also to steer. It kept trying to kick out up or side to side. I had to use all of my weight upwards to keep the prop in the water. If you could please help out in any way or insight that would be much appreciated. Thanks

Thank you! Swamp Runner has a great video on how you can adjust your kit. This would depend on what kit you ordered, but it gives you a solid foundation on what to look for and how to fix it - kzfaq.info/get/bejne/fKdxas1hybzWfIk.html - theres a things going on so once you can narrow it down then I would be able to better help you.

I'm sorry, but the swamp runner is falling behind. Mudskipper is way better and surpassed SPS by a considerable margin. I don't understand why we have to fix the weed issue. They need to address it. It's a joke; everyone, stop wasting your time trying to make them weedless. That's Swamp runners job. Maybe they will learn when people stop buying their kits. I'm saying this with respect but if you have any vegetation, sell it. This kit is useless in weeds. This kit will also destroy the longevity of your engine by overworking it when it wraps up. Wake up; they don't care.
@JTgatoring
@JTgatoring 3 жыл бұрын
I don't understand. Would you be able to elaborate on how mud skipper is better and more directly towards the weed issue? The swamp runner kits have a weedless skeg, a weed cutter attachment, and pretty solid weedless prop. I was able to make my kit completely weedless already and have been playing around with new ideas from viewers subscribers. The issue has already been resolved.
