This was probably the best scene in the movie in my opinion. It really captured Mavericks spirit and skill together. The fighting scenes at the end really made the movie obviously, but this scene really fleshed out the character and drama.

For all the comments saying Maverick did this to show he is the best, yes he's always gonna show off his pilot skills, but the main reason he did it was to prevent any of these kids from dying on the mission. With a 4 minute timer, the enemy response time would've for sure gotten a couple of the pilots killed, but the other superiors didn't care as long as the mission was completed. He had to prove the mission was doable within the original time limit so he could lead them on pace and save them.

Funny how people say "He wanted to prove he was the best" implying they have watched the film, when in the film he states prior to this scene they have to do it in that time else the pilots would get shot down to which the commander shrugged off. It's obvious that he did this to basically go over the head of the commander, proving the commander wrong. Doing it in 02:15 instead of 02:30 is the part which he is showing off, but to prove to the pilots that not only can it be done, it can actually be done quicker, giving them more confidence.

This is a great point. Sometimes the only limiting factor is that you BELIEVE it IS NOT POSSIBLE. When really, IT IS. Just do it, and if you can't yet, train. He gave them a goal and then proved it was doable. And they are very competitive which means if one person can do it, all of them will believe they can do it. He fixed the problem and also saved their lives in the process.

I served 32 years though and I wouldn't want to risk a dishonorable and jail, not to mention the bill for bending that bird (which would just be MORE jail). However, if this were a real-life mission, a pair of GBU-57's dropped from a B-2 would have been more cost effective and left less of a 'fingerprint' on the scene. Just my opinion, of course.

I don’t care that this is essentially the trench run from Star Wars: this film is one of the best ever made. Its tribute to aviation and our fine Navy men and women is incredible. The original, as iconic and beloved as it is, looks silly by comparison. Tom Cruise is an American hero despite his weird religion, and I think Edge of Tomorrow might just be a documentary; I would trust this man with an actual F18 defending our country.

The 4 minute window adjustment was the flight chief resigning to the fact that a few, if not all, would not make it back, but atleast the mission would be complete.

Something about the terrain confusing the targeting systems on the more modern craft. I think. It's also how Mav survives against one of the enemy fifth gens. Missile lock didnt work so the enemy resorted to just guns while chasing Mav through the valley.
