How to do movies right and Tom is a veteran. Apart from all the good points mentioned here I also noticed the female pilot is not propped to be a femme fatale or a guy beater or a love interest. They don’t make her be an obnoxious girl boss either. She’s just another pilot who happens to be a woman and holds her own with the rest of the guys. No pandering here folks. Just a good female character.

Yeah, just his face did a great job of showing the situation he was in. If Maverick failed, it would be a huge kick in the balls to an already shaky morale situation. If Maverick crashed or died, the Admiral would have to answer for it. Even if Maverick completely succeeds, the Admiral has to discipline him for it, but wouldn't be able to kick him out because he just succeeded at it. Somehow Hamm conveys all that in a matter of seconds on-screen.

Yes! And that's what Viper and Jester did in the first movie. Old farts who knew all the tricks, gave the young bucks a deep dose of humility, and then helped them achieve greatness. Cyclone’s reaction is the best. He’s the commanding officer of the mission and seemingly the antagonist to Maverick’s methods, but in his heart he’s still a fighter pilot and is rooting for Maverick to pull this run off more than anyone. And the fact that we the audience are the only ones to see the hope and excitement in his eyes during Maverick’s run, makes this scene.
@suave-alpaca8412

I agree. I was worried that he would be someone who’s overly against Maverick out of pettiness, but Im glad that its not. He’s just being reasonable. No one could pull off what Maverick asked, and the time is ticking, so he decided to take over. But after seeing that it could be done, he took action and assign Maverick as team captain, because Maverick would provide leadership and morale boost being on the field. At the end Cyclone risked his entire career for this

I loved this scene, but I wish they would have given the guys watching it something better to get excited about. A line that slowly goes green isn't very exciting. Maverick was cleared of wrongdoing. Goose was killed due to an irreversible flat spin caused by a compressor stall on the F-14. The subsequent ejection was fatal because of how the F-14's ejection sequence works. . The ejection handle is pulled . 0.2 seconds later it fires . 0.5 seconds later the RIO is ejected. . 0.4 seconds later the pilot is ejected. In a flat spin, the canopy doesn't fall cleanly away, it hovers for half a second or so . Remember in the ejection sequence, the RIO is first so as the canopy was not fully clear of the fuselage, due to the lack of forward movement; Goose hit the canopy suffering fatal head and neck injuries.

I love the previous scene in that room too. Hangman says, "for this mission you either fly like Maverick or you don't come home at all." I saw this with my nine-year-old, and she asked me during this scene why Maverick was grunting so much during the run. She was completely blown away when I explained to her how the G-forces from the turns were squeezing his rib cage against his back and pushing all the breath out of his lungs, and it was taking everything he had to not black out and crash the plane. Hopefully seeing this in the theater is something she'll remember when she gets to be a parent herself.

That's only partially true. Gravity is of course squeezing, but pilots are taught to breathe and tense their bodies in a specific manner that forces blood to their head to avoid g-loc. Maverick is doing those grunts intentionally - it's part of the process. And since he's really pulling those g's, he's really doing the proper techniques.

For those that don't know: At this point in the film, Maverick has been training the students for weeks, trying to get them to finish this run in 2 minutes 30 seconds, because that's what the real mission will require in order for them to stay alive. After weeks of training, the students still haven't been able to do it and most have become tired of Maverick, and believe that what hes asking is impossible. Because of this, the Admiral begins questioning Mavericks teaching ability, fires him, and chooses to take over the class himself. He sets a time limit of 4 minutes, which is definitely do-able but will end up getting the pilots killed more than likely because its too slow. Maverick steals a jet and flys the course himself in front of the Admiral and the class just to prove it can be done. And in order to make his point even more, he flys it in 2 minutes 15 seconds, that's 15 seconds faster than the mission even calls for. On top of THAT, he does everything by himself just to show them how it can definitely be done with the two plane teams the students will be flying in. The students will have two jets on the mission, one plane for carrying the bombs and a second jet with a person responsible for aiming the bombs. It might be the most intense scene I've ever watched in a theater. Once you have context it's even better

Cyclone is a bit of an unsung hero, here. He told Maverick that he had only shown the students that the goal was unachievable. Purposefully or not, he motivated Maverick as only a good leader can. @leraygun

Well said, Cyclone is a great leader because he showed humility and put the mission before his ego. Despite Maverick defying his commands and orders, he could separate insubordination from what needed to be done to accomplish the mission. He exhibited extreme ownership when he gave up his own plan in favor of Maverick's after he proved it could be done - because it was indeed the best way. Cyclone allowed Maverick to lead and risked his career doing so because ultimately the mission and the lives of the team are more important than his career.

Another good scene... Well two... The first time Maverick and Rooster go head to head and Mav pulls a braking maneuver to get behind him. The shot of the underside of Mav's plane inside the cockpit is a rare shot... And then later, they do it again, only this time Mav's guarding Rooster with his flares and his plane, seeing as while the flares work for one missile, without speed he can't avoid the other. Two moments, similar cinematography, two different contexts and meanings.

Maybe the best scene in the movie. Watched this in imax cinema with my sister and brother in law. We never spoke to each other all the way through. Last 40 minutes were as attached as I have been to a movie in terms of being gripped. This gave me so many jaw drops, lumps in throat, goosebumps than I think i’ve ever had in 2 hours. Saw the first at cinema in 1986 as an 18 year old. Thought that was great, this was better! 🔥🔥🔥🔥

One of the many things I love about this scene is that Maverick is pre-stressing himself for the G-loads he's going to be taking. He's not showing off when he inverts and pulls down hard, stacking up g's on his way to the deck. He's getting his body prepared for the oncoming ordeal.

Incorrect.. pilots do that to pull positive G which is easier to sustain and does less damage than negative G, if you pull negative G by just nosing over into the dive you’ll give yourself an aneurysm if you overdo it, its easier on your body and just plain faster to roll inverted and pull instead of pushing. When you push forward on the stick you are fighting the lift vector trying to make you go up, but if you invert the lift vector and pull with it, suddenly its much easier and faster to turn
@PrimarchX
@PrimarchX 11 ай бұрын
@@Matsumoto77 Well, yes, he inverts and pulls positive G's because, as you say, that's a heck of a lot better than a strong negative G load. My point is that he is also doing some pre-stressing to get his body ready for the high G's he'll be taking during the bomb run. It's like stretching before you exercise...

What is so amazing about this scene is that it isn’t supposed to work so well. There is no enemy. No real danger to the main character. And it is literally a simulation of the real mission. Yet it still conveyed so much drama and tension. And a lot of it was driven by the real grunts by Maverick with each turn. So well done.
@ApexAdvisor126
@ApexAdvisor126 Жыл бұрын
Except for the danger of him crashing, breaking the plane, passing out at 9+G or failing the mission. If you don't think Maverick was in danger, you need to rewatch the scene. He put himself in extreme danger to show it could be done.
@dsario174
@dsario174 Жыл бұрын
@@ApexAdvisor126 that is all true. I wasn’t taking that away from the scene. I was comparing it to what would normally be a climactic moment in a film. On the surface level a scene with this much excitement and tension, involves a clear battle between the protagonist and the bad guy or circumstance . We know he wasn’t going to die in that scene. So the only other outcome was him failing.(also extremely unlikely). But none of that mattered. It was a simulation of the actual mission. And played out like the absolute climax of a film. It was just so well done.
@lemmihilldrix1450
@lemmihilldrix1450 Жыл бұрын
@@dsario174 It was important because if Maverick couldn’t pull it off, then literally nobody could; the mission would be a failure and all of them would die trying. So although there is no enemy, the stakes are almost as high as the real mission. Why even try if it’s impossible? Maverick showed it was possible, and it gave them a huge morale boost that they needed. That’s why it works, because the audience wants and NEEDS him to succeed or everyone else dies
@dsario174
@dsario174 Жыл бұрын
@@lemmihilldrix1450 I don’t disagree with any of that. But aesthetically, the scene is not your typical climax of an action movie. The surface level of the scene is Maverick doing a training course. One of the more underrated aspects of this scene to me was Hangman's reaction. He'd been portrayed as an overly cocky loner (which he is), but the look he gives the admiral when it becomes obvious what Maverick is doing, and the look he gives as Maverick starts say, "Aww yeah, I want to see this!" and shows he thinks Maverick can do it. Just a neat little blink and you'll miss it character development that helps make the movie as cool as it is.

I'm glad a non-franchise movie won in fact, and I do think EEAAO was better, juggling a lot of layers of story masterfully (I say this as someone who has THE FABELMANS as my favorite of the year, with EEAAO in 2nd (TOP GUN: MAVERICK is my 4th favorite of the year overall)). Let's not forget that EEAAO also found a massive audience, especially considering it's small budget.
