I'm in the Houston area where Kuykendahl is pronounced kur'-ken-doll. Apparently there were some German immigrants by that name who settled here in Texas in the 1800s. Kuykendahl Rd, according to legend, got its name after a Kuykendahl was hanged from a bridge along the road.

I thoroughly enjoyed the tips, Crista. I have used most of what you listed and will definitely check the Will and Obituary records too. You mentioned the DNA Testing, I have done that and cannot wait for the result in the new year. I am hoping the result will solve a mystery that I am stuck on for one of the ancestors. I am excited to learn more.

I’ve been having major issues with lack of birth records my main structure has been built off of census, SSI death index, graves, and some marriage records but the further back it’s been a struggle.

Something I learned about census records from Ancestry is that simply because it's stated on a census as spelled a certain way does NOT mean that that is how you spell their name. I have seen census records with my own ancestors where they really misspelled either their first name or their last name. For instance, my very great grandmother's parents were from Ireland, but the census takers in the US didn't get their surname correct. I found variations of it and because of this I was having a hard time locating her parents' names in Ireland because I was searching for the wrong surname. Fortunately, someone gave me their correct last name and their names and now I know their correct last name. It's no big deal, but it just proves you cannot accept a certain official record as being absolutely 100% accurate--they're not always 100% accurate.

+Ilovecoupons Sometimes the handwriting is hard to interpret, too. In the 1850 census, my COREY family was indexed as HOWREY. To find them, I had to go through every page of the census for that township to find them myself.

RonJohn63 LOL That's funny. :) I wonder why the census taker didn't just ask how to spell their name? I would have, but maybe they didn't have time to ask for verification. LOL

Kathy Nevin Kathy, oh wow! I know what you mean. My very great-grandmother from Ireland's surname was confusing. They had it listed in the census spelled completely different than what my grandmother told me was the correct spelling. It took me forever to get the right surname! LOL :)

Ilovecoupons _I wonder why the census taker didn't just ask how to spell their name?_ If you think you know the answer... then there's no reason to ask. If consistent spelling isn't that important to you... then there's no reason to ask. :)

This is off-topic from any of the ancestor videos I have seen, but I wonder if anyone else has encountered this problem: People who are not that experienced in genealogy have more than once taking my family photos and attach them to members and their tree and it is not accurate. I could understand this happening if I did not have my grandfather, for example, extensively sourced, with his entire life been in one state. Yet his photo keeps being attached to other people's records in other states, and this could ultimately lead to other people making errors in turn. Is it possible for you to do a video emphasizing to members that they need to be careful regarding publicly scanned photos? if they are not 100% certain that a photo belongs to their family, they should reach out to the person who posted the photo and doublecheck. I am very irritated that this keeps happening. People need to be more careful. It is very disconcerting to see my family photos attached to other trees with whom I know there is no relationship.

Living4life58 I think that sometimes people are trying to determine relationships where they may have hit a wall, especially if they are African American and have some information pertaining to their European ancestry. I agree they should not attach photos without knowing for certain, but I understand why they would if they are inexperienced and do not know how else to save a name and a photo for future reference. It is extremely difficult for most African Americans to find relatives prior to the civil war for obvious reasons. I would encourage you to try to ignore it in good conscience that you may be helping someone to find a missing piece in their family tree. In the mean time, good Luck with others climbing your family tree:)

Sorry if this is a bit late, I'm a bit new to the party and what I'm about to say might not have been available on Ancestry when you wrote this, but you can make this private so people need to contact you to be able to link the photo to their tree. They might still be able to link it, but are less likely if there is no photo, as only the record that you added a photo for a person with this name is there. I sincerely doubt it has anything to do with African Americans, I've seen family trees with members of those in my tree who I think their research is tenuous at best, and I'm English with those this has happened to coming from Ireland. I think some people get stuck and just plump for someone who might be an ancestor because they have no idea how to get any further.

I am looking for the parents of my maternal great grand mother. At the age of 17 in 1900, she is listed in a house hold as the aunt to a 50 year old. I believe that she is the niece of one of the parents in the said household, but I am unable to ascertain which of the aunt's and uncle's siblings are her parents. I have looked a birth, marriage, death, census, and military records. Please help!

My mom's biological dad was not the father who raised her, she had a step-father. There is a name of father on her birth certificate, I found her cousins and mine via Ancestry and Ancestry DNA. But no one seems to have the exact first and middle name of the father listed on her birth certificate. One of the possible names is of a man who died in WWII, this could be him.

Yes I have done this repeatedly but you have to be careful about obits. Sometimes the stories are embellished especially if the deceased gave in accurate info about their heritage.

I can't hear the video after the introduction. I can faintly hear Crista talking but I can't make out what she is saying. I tried using the cc, but I can't see all of the words because of the white background. I was looking forward to watching this because I am in the midst of proving parentage for an ancestor right now.

I have a quick question that you may be able to help me with. i recently found out that my female ancestor(slave), had a baby with the Dandridge family(!st lady Washington sister son). I can not figure out which son. i am checking the timeline, but need to know how to verify. I did a dna test, that confirmed my relationship with the Durden and Dandridge family, which married a Dandridge. any suggestions ???

***** Thanks for the suggestions. Through the DNA testing, i was able to confirm dna proof of being related to a living descendent of both the husband(Durden), and Martha's sister(Dandridge). Creating a paper trail is needed, and i will get started with your suggestions. thanks Timothy.

Dirty words used in genealogy research: INFERRED, ASSUMED, GUESS, SUPPOSED. New researchers are warned that the use of these mental connections are dangerous. The work a researcher does must be detailed and thorough, it will be nullified by less than accurate searching. Nothing on public sites like Ancestry, Family Search should be used as a valid cited source. There are numerous examples of erroneous citing by Ancestry with blatantly incorrect data.
