The crickets, the whistle, the echo, the stack talk...the whole thing is magical. I close my eyes and I'm there watching this magnificent beast continue forward to her inevitable date with destiny.

As the sun sets on a beautiful 1955 evening, a PRR I-1 comes through the area running lightly.

Three of these blasting up a valley with a heavy coal train would have been quite an experience. At least we modelers can experience it in a smaller scale.

The decapods were the best freight engine on the Pennsy in my opinion and the K4's where the best passenger engine. I love the K4 3 chime whistle on the decapod in the recording. Steam is the best! The audio is incredibly clear! I could only imagine what it would be like to ride in one of these things and hear the hiss of the steam, the barking of the stack, thundering of the drivers, and the seeing the motions of the engineer and the fireman and they work in harmony. Truly stunning!

The I1 was a rough rider because the rear set of drivers was right under the cab. Add to that the fact that quite afew remained hand-bombers (not stoker-equipped) for yrs and you'd get a different opinion on how great they were from the crews! LOL. But that said, as a fan, I agree w/you that they look and sound pretty awesome!

There remains a single I1sa which should be restored and operated.

Very very sad sounding whistle..retirement was at a near.

That's the PRR 3 chime for you, a vert melodic, almost sad sounding whistle. And yeah, if the date is to be believed, that would give this particular locomotive at maximum, two years until retirement... assuming it was among the final steam assignments before total dieselization.

That's a dyin' dog sad sound for sure.

Not to mention the banshee sounded down right creepy.

@@wobblinwheel I am aware. I was just saying that the PRR banshee whistle sounds creepy at night.

I1s were born an bred for hauling tonnage over the alleghenies, that whistle echoing off the hills is as pure as Mirella Freni at the Met.

One of these was the N1 2-10-2 Santa Fe type, a PRR rarity.

Those BANSHEE screams from out in the woods are just hauntingly beautiful, Listen very close , there are 3 tones plus the steam pressure for 4 ....

Thank you for uploading this. I purchased the CD some time ago, but somehow, when I tried importing this into my iTunes library, it ended up being corrupted and would skip all the time.

Love the sound of those old 3 chimes, much better than the banshee whistles they had originally.
@victoriacyunczyk4 жыл бұрын
I heard that when they were rebuilt with higher boiler pressure, the banshee whistles weren't audible when fully opened.
@trainknut4 жыл бұрын
@@victoriacyunczyk I was under the impression that they mounted the 3 chimes because crews were complaining about the awful sound they made... But not all of them got the change.
@victoriacyunczyk4 жыл бұрын
@@trainknut That was one of the reasons. But whistle signals are useless if they can't be heard. I'd think that was the bigger reason, considering that PRR management didn't seem too concerned with crews' comfort, hence why there were 598 I1's, despite many creews hating them for their rough ride.

I always thought the I1's used the "Banshee" whistle...🤔
@dcoursey822 ай бұрын
They did until later in their lives. As more passenger engines were displaced by diesels, more of their whistles made it onto freight engines

No, it's an N1. Minor oversight.

They were delivered with banshee whistles, but most we're changed out to 3 chimes by WWII. A few retained their banshee's like 4483 up in NY.
@SwindellSteamWorks5 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the info on that. Hearing that 3 chime caught me off guard. Pretty much every model of the I1sa with sound comes with a banshee whistle loaded on.@@KLTrainz

Is this the real audio? Because I thought the whistles of the I1sas were REALLY high pitched.
@dcoursey822 жыл бұрын
Yes it's real audio. Before dieselization, they used the Banshee (high-pitched) whistles, but once PRR started phasing out steam, some I1's started using the passenger 3 chimes from retired K4s and M1s.
@amtrak12142 жыл бұрын
@@dcoursey82 no I know that. But the 3 chimes on the decapods were very high pitched also
@dcoursey822 жыл бұрын
@@amtrak1214 It's still the same PRR 3-chime passenger whistle, but what makes them sound different from engine to engine is the position of the bell (the chambered portion) of the whistle. For example, when you see footage of PRR 1361 on her shakedown run, she has a very deep throaty sound, then later ventures she has a higher pitched sound. Believe it or not, that's the SAME whistle....but the chambers were positioned such that one chambers sound was more pronounced than the other.
@dcoursey822 жыл бұрын
Alternately, on one of my videos (of the I1's in Elmira, NY) the whistle is very high pitched, but that's because the engineer is purposefully overblowing it to make it shreik.
