You did such an amazing job! I’ve only recently started loving Japanese maple after planting a blood-good tree in my front yard. I’ve also learned the term dissectum vs palmatum is based on the shape of the leaves. Dissectum are fringe like & palmatum are broad leaves. You have a beautiful collections of both.

thanks, yes, there is so much to learn about these amazing trees. And remember, all of our Japanese maples are also grafted onto the palmatum root stock due to its hardiness.

Beautiful Music! You mentioned your tree was about 50 years old, when was the last pruning? Or had it never been pruned?

The tree normally gets pruned every year in early March. We let it go for two years so that I could create the video to show the transformation.

Please help. I just planted a new 36 inch tall Red Dragon 3 weeks ago ($500) and last night the deer ate every single leaf. Should I cut all the leaf stems back to the main branch or what?

That is not good. Personally, I would leave the tree for now and do not over water, just don't let the root system dry out. Hopefully you will start to see a second flush of growth towards mid to end of July. Let me know how things look a few weeks from now
