Yes it can, as a seedling is always a gamble. You never know if it will stay true to the original tree. More often then not though, it should have most of the characteristics of the original tree

@maplesandmusic 14 күн бұрын
When planting into the ground from your 5 gallon container it is not important to physically cut the roots back. And yes, wait until fall when the tree is going into its dormancy. Mid October would be good to plant. Remember, make sure your location has good drainage. You can gently pull the roots prior to planting to free them up a little. Or you can just plant into the ground and the roots will push out on their own as they establish themselves thru out the winter / spring months

We are in zone 8b Japanese maple can grow in zone 3 and 4 although there would be extra care required for the cooler winter months making sure they are well protected. Strategic planting in the garden would be important. There is quite a lot of info online if you search " Japanese maple growing in zone 3 & 4"

With cedar boxes, we don’t do anything to the wood. The natural preservatives already in the cedar itself will give you years of use. With that said, of course you can pressure treat if you want, and you may get an extra year or two, but definitely not required.

I too have a SEIRYU which I planted a few years ago. It’s currently 10ft tall, but I’m waiting for the pop in growth sometime soon. Does everybody see a 12” - 18” growth per season? Minus this pruning, any other suggestions to have a healthy tree? Thanks!!
@maplesandmusic
@maplesandmusic Ай бұрын
The seiryu does put out multiple and rapid growth flushes in the garden. If you do not prune the tree and just let it grow it will take up a large space of the garden ( up to 15' in height) and you will also get plenty of natural die back due to the density of the foliage eventually.

@maplesandmusic Ай бұрын
Generally we do most of our pruning in early spring before the foliage is out. But with that said, we also prune thru out the summer months as well. Japanese maples can be pruned thru out the growing season. It is just easier visually when pruning before the tree is full of leaves.Especially the dwarf varieties.

Thanks for posting this. Good stuff! I'm wondering if you can't be there to mist these 10 times per day after grafting would you recommend putting a baggy over the sine wood to keep it moist or is there another approach? Thanks.
@maplesandmusic
@maplesandmusic Ай бұрын
If you have "Remy cloth", just lay that over the top of the trees and let it hang down both sides. That will retain the moisture fairly well for longer periods. Personally I would not recommend poly as it will not allow any air to pass thru for the plants to breathe and could create quite a heat dome which would be catastrophic on the young grafts.

@@ryanmack9097 In all our years of growing / grafting Japanese maples we never applied a single application of any herbicide or fungicide. Thanks for the great video. May I ask how far away from the front porch shall I plant a ‘Bloodgood’ Japanese maple if I only want to keep the tree at 6‘ feet tall by trimming each year. Thanks.
@maplesandmusic
@maplesandmusic 2 ай бұрын
The root system is quite small compared to other trees. I would say keep the tree 6' - 8' away from the porch. Also. the bloodgood is one of the largest growing varieties. As the Bloodgood ages it would require much more pruning then other varieties to keep it at a 6' height and may ultimately distort the look of the tree. You may want to keep it in a permanently in a container to keep it at a more manageable height of 6'. There are varieties that look similar to the bloodgood but have a much smaller footprint in size. The "Pixie" and the "Marjan" would both be good choices to plant in the ground
