Pruning jade plants (crassula, money plant)

Sometimes jades need a trim so that they can be both better looking and healthier. Like most succulents, jades (crassula, aka; money tree) tolerate pruning pretty well. But still, there's no need to make more cuts than what's best for our plant. And it's not good to unnecessarily traumatize the plant, or interfere too much with its natural beauty. In essence, we should only cut the problematic branches that waste our plant's resources. In this video I explain how to go about pruning jades and share some helpful tips.
The pruning principles explained in this video applies to most plants and trees as well.
By the way; if you prune your jade, don't throw away the branches you cut off. Check out my earlier video here • Propagating jade plant... to see how you can propagate more jade plants with those cuttings. It's very easy.
Visit my channel at / agoodlife for more videos on plant care and propagation.
Happy planting, and thanks for watching!

Thank you Jitendra Baraiya! You can prune indoor jades anytime of the year. And when it comes to fertilization, you can fertilize once every 5-6 months with water soluble fertilizers (any will do but preferably ones that are formulated for cacti and succulents.) You can also add some coffee grounds to the soil, but don't let it get on the leaves. Good luck!

Hi HexOmega! I agree, I liked how it looked too, but as I tried to explain in the video, the main goal is not looks. Pruning should be primarily done to remove branches that either waste our plants energy or would become problematic in the near future. Take care!

Hi Harvider kaur, what I put on cuts is the plant's own soil mixed with water; just mud. I make it wet and runny so that it can be applied more easily and creates a thin mud cover.

For a well-established matured jade plant I would trim cuttings from the bottom with stems exposed and wait for them to Callus over and then propagate those cuttings. I think it is much faster and better than trying to propagate leaves.
@AGoodLife
@AGoodLife 3 жыл бұрын
Absolutely Progressive Discussions! I have a video on jade propagation where I show both methods ( kzfaq.info/get/bejne/gN98erpol8y0o6M.html ) and I recommend using cuttings and larger stems instead of leaves, as well. Thanks for commenting! :)
@ProgressiveDiscussions
@ProgressiveDiscussions 3 жыл бұрын
@@AGoodLife the problem I have with Leaf propagation even if I have the entire Leaf intact and I allowed to tip the callus over is, that regardless if it roots and Sprouts, me spraying it every few days ends in the same result with the growth stopping after the beginning Sprout and then it dies. Maybe I should not spray it at all?
@AGoodLife
@AGoodLife 3 жыл бұрын
@@ProgressiveDiscussions Maybe, I never sparayed mine and most of mine survived so far, some for 2 years or more. I gently pour a little bit of water by the roots without getting the leaf/leaves wet. Still, they are healthy and they grow, but they grow SO slow, so unless you want a tiny cute little potted plant, and want it to sty tiny and cute for a long time, I wouldn't recommend propagating leaves... :) Best of luck!

Great video, thank you! I am looking for information on whether it's possible to notch a crassula trunk to encourage branching. Our mature jade's trunk is bare of branches on one side, mostly due to light and heat issues in its previous location. It's very lopsided in both appearance and center of gravity! Have you ever notched a mature crassula that resulted in a new branch or budding? Pinching isn't applicable here, there's nothing to pinch!

Thanks, jennifer phillips! I don't know about notching but with jades I know extra light encourages branching. I would recommend that you expose that bare side of the trunk to more light and hopefully that should result in some new branches growing on that side. It may take some time, of course, so give it at least a few months. Good luck!
