I take a look back in time to review the steps taken to get this Jade underway as a bonsai. Today, I prune the tree and start to give it an African Baobab style.

This tree has a really well balanced structure now. Don’t forget to rotate it this winter, if possible, to avoid the windswept look. That look works for your hair 😉 but not so well for a Jade / Baobab! ~ It’s somewhat amusing to see all the viewers who want those cuttings. Here in SoCal folks are constantly posting online huge Jade cuttings for free, myself included. Like many plants their size needs to be controlled in the garden. As you mentioned everyone knows how easily they root , so rather than composting them, they offer them up. Also sometimes, especially after multiple rains , the plants can get heavy and fall over. If one leaves it laying there it will most often grow roots all along the stem. That’s how they sometimes spread and form thickets in habitat. - Merry Christmas!

Interesting thinking about how robust Jade’s are. Here in my feed is a video of Nigel pruning jade in the middle of a Canadian winter. I’d done some heavy pruning and follow on cutting work on my Jade’s early this morning in the midst of a Queensland summer and I’m thinking both alternatives are fine.

Hey Nigel! I wonder if you could give me an advice. I love mediterranean olive trees. I found them beutiful, almost perfect for bonsai. Slow growing with nice smooth bark and rootbase. Big trees usually fairly easy do backbudding. So i finally found one in a nursery in my city. BUt i's like a stick. Absolutely straight section 30cm long before first devision. i would like to attach some fotos if i could. So should i risk and cut it somewhere 5-10cm higher than ground surface, or try to airlayer it (never done before). I'm not sure if tree survive such severe prunning. And as i said it's very slowgrowing - losing of all branching is alsmot back in time for 3 years. I've rooted several small cuttings, but they are too far from even bonsay material.

This reminds me of a story I heard about the people that sex baby chickens when they are very small, separating the males from the females. The people who do the sorting are very good, rarely making a mistake in their judgement. But they have a very hard time explaining exactly what they are looking for to make the determination. Thus for those who want to learn how to do this job, they really can’t do much other than watch the experts at work, picking up little tips hear and there, but mostly developing this ‘feel’ for the sex of the chick. Nigel is such a master at creating these works of art that it is difficult to know exactly why he does what he does. Most cuts are simply preceded by, “I don’t like the look of this” or this sticks out too far, or this doesn’t make the look I’m going for, etc. I just have to keep watching intensely and practicing over and over on my own plants, with the hope that one day I will develop the kind of vision Nigel displays with each plant he works on. Fascinating !!!
