Another bonus for multiple toolheads is not to have different colors or materials, but nozzles. You can for example have a .6 and a .4 in different tools. You won't be using both in a single print (yet), but it is nice to have one "on call".

Could potentially even have a spindle toolhead for some basic mid processing, maybe even have a printed magazine for heat set inserts and a tool head to auto place them.
@netpackrat

@@MyBrothersMario That would be crazy. Add an additional axis or two to the insert toolhead, and you could even have the machine insert them at angles other than straight up and down. You could have inserts located in ways that would be difficult or impossible otherwise.

I just got an XL to play with a few days ago. Great printer, great finish. I love how the printer has all internal slots in the profiles covered and has a full closed metal bottom. No hidden corners where pieces of filament or extrusion "get lost". Easy to clean out with a brush or the vacuum cleaner. It is not a cheap printer but this is actually the first printer that I feel does not need any mods to be usable. @6:09 "exactly following the instructions" but ... if you followed the instructions exactly, the steel sheet should be on the heated bed since that is what was asked in step 5.2 in the build manual and I have not seen instructions to remove it again further on.

Between the Qidi Max 3 and K1 Max the Prusa XL is a hard sell. Nevermind not knowing if/when Bambu will drop a large format Core XY. Hard to justify the price/wait.

@@user-nq4fp4wr8c A large-format bed slinger would be the absolute worst possible decision Bambu Labs could make. Couple things Prusa should probably do with the WiFi: 1. Make their own module and harden it. This way they're in full control of the module's firmware, they can add nice things like sign into a WiFi with a QR code, or hotspot mode. If Arduino can release a $20 board based on a uBlox ESP32-S3 (?), I'm pretty sure Prusa can pull it off. 2. Work towards an open standard for local networked printing. Peer to peer, client-server, whatever the tech, they're in a really good position to set the standard for all hobbyists and small-scale farms; just give us an option that doesn't require a subscription to a datacenter (coughMarkforgedcough) where who knows what will happen to our 3D models.

it feels like in the past few months and years of 3D printing, there's been a subconscious shift (at least for me) in what appeals to me as a printer: I think I've been spoiled with all these new fantastical printers being released with slick casings and intricate designs, which makes me turned off for the XL and it's appearance. I know it's an unimportant factor, but even something as bare-boned as the P1P in my personal opinion looks better extrinsically.

Such a high price and basically only suited for PLA, PETG and TPU out of the box as it isn't even enclosed ... Sure, Prusa has some nice ideas included, but what use is having a jet-engine on your car if basic steering isn't working? Bambu didn't bring magic or stuff that we hadn't seen yet (except for the Lidar, but they also seem to have realized that is actually overkill), but they figured out what things are really needed to provide a printer that just works the way normal users want it ... Their path from X1C via lower cost P1P to the P1S shows how they look at what the masses want. Prusa on the other hand doesn not seem to listen to the market. People want cheap, speed and more than PLA ... and size. Bambu covers 3 of the 4, Prusa only 1.

Secondly, Bambu does solve a lot of their problems with sensors and software while prusa does have a tendency to solve their problems mechanically, like the planetary gearbox nextruder you mentioned. Its two completely different ways of approaching a problem, so how come that one is way ahead of the other if you cant directly compare them. Third thing is, just because you can fit some fancy arrangement of gears into an extruder doesnt mean you should. Bambu extruder is working perfectly fine and I've never heard of any issues regarding it. Adding complexity to a system always makes it prone to fail easier, and makes its repairability worse.

Nice video. I haven't purchased a printer yet but I'm torn between the XL or the MK4. I know both will be able to have multiple heads but looking at hobby stuff with larger prints i.e. cosplay, helmets, swords, etc. Looks like the print quality is really good. Would it be possible to compare the MK4 with a .6 nozzle against the XL with .6 nozzle - more similar comparison? Like I said I'm torn between the two but also if I'm going to go big, its better to buy once, cry once. Any suggestions to help? Thanks again for your videos - liked and subscribed.

For the price of a 5 head one, you can quite literally buy an entire farm of 3D printers. I'm saving to buy my first 3D printer and start a small business at home. I don't want something extremely expensive, but reliable, not asdembled and that won't limit me in my learning process. Probably won't be getting one of these (although I haven't seen another printer of these characteristics, also every Prusa printer is extremely expensive).

Sadly I believe once Bambu releases the A1 on the 20th the Mini will be obsolete. Then when the Rumored Bambu P1X that is supposed to be a big build plate releases Prusa will be like the REAL Rolls Royce of 3D Printers. As in......... Was good back in the day. Overpriced. Needs Alot of Maintenance. Much Better Machines out there for way less money. Loyal Fans will swear by them when people ask why not get a (x). A VORON would be a better buy if your trying to assemble a Printer.

Prusa fanboys ultimate retort had always been "it just works" that's why you pay $2-3x for it. You get it, take it out of the box and assemble it and it just works. For years and years, so reliable. A little maintenance and use a workhorse you can count on for years to come. I've gotten many comments about how my ender is trash yadda yada.. imo Bambu put prusa on the back foot and it seems they still don't have much of a plan to recover. Or maybe they do but it's a slow rollout. Idk but I do think it has to be getting kinda hard to justify the price premium vs the competition. I'll be honest, when the xl was announced i was like 🤩"ooooh new shiny" but knew even if i could afford to id never spend $2500 bucks for one. Especially with voron being a q thing. Now that Bambu had their offerings out and all the other companies are scrambling too catch up it seems like prusa is being well and truly left behind. Their new shiny is all 3-5 year old tech/features for ridiculous money, and it doesn't "just work" anymore...

I would like to update to an XL, but there's two things I need. Most of all I need it to be able to print with 2 different nozzle sizes. For instance .6 for heavy work, .25 for fine details. The other thing I would like is two different materials. For instance being able to print PETG and PLA on the same print. Maybe they have this by now, but when I checked last time, they didn't.

The stringing comes through using the .6 nozzle. Stringing is induced by just 3 factors. Flow, temp and retract in that order. Direct drive 1mm standart retract +-0.5 is ALWAYS enough. MK4 is doing better with a smaller nozzle. So the nozzle is different = too much flow.

I can still see a need for this printer for the tool changing aspect (if someone genuinely had that need), but otherwise it just doesn't seem to be remotely worth it. No input shaping is borderline criminal today. You can see either motor or belt noise in the spiderman eye print when compared to the Mk4. Maybe try installing some good old motor dampers on it to quieten it down and maybe get rid of some of those artifacts. I had to do that with my Flying Bear Reborn 2 as the motor noise was really causing serious artifacts. If those artifacts are belt noise, I'm not sure how to fix that and would appreciate input on possible fixes.

I guess that's the main problem with preordering like this - back in 2021, this would've been a really great printer. In 2023, though, it's really lacking when it comes to speed, features and workflow for a premium-priced printer - basically, everything you'd expect to differentiate a $2k printer from a $300 printer. Honestly, I'm glad I didn't take the plunge back then...in a world where the K1 Max and X-Max 3 exist, the market for the Prusa XL is infinitesimally niche.

I have about that much into my Voron, it took me a lot longer to build, and it will never have multiple toolheads. Prusa for sure underestimated the challenges of getting the XL to market, which to be completely fair, should have been foreseeable by the time they announced it. Taking money for a product that's still in development is stupid no matter who does it. When it has input shaping I think it will look like a pretty good deal for the volume it has, if that's something you need.
