I just finished the Trails of Mana remake and was in the mood for more Mana games (I played all the 4 games made in the 90s + Sword of Mana, but nothing after that). Thanks for preventing me from wasting my time. ._. That being said, Trials of Mana is what a 3D Mana game should be. You should give it a try.

Hey so I watched your review for dawn of mana and I honastly agree with it. However I've been playing this game for a long time, and I feel there are things unexplained that add to positives about the game. For example, some commands that are not explained are very fun and important. For instance, in the first person view of the bow state if you hold down guard you can move around in first person. If you go off a slope and ride your sword, With the sword rider emblem, you can play tony hawk by pressing forward, If you roll of a ledge at the very tip, you can kick off the ground and fly far. Guard can help a lot with camera positioning. What I've found recently, witch you can do in legend as well, is you can cancel your sword swings recovery by guarding during curtain frames, only if you have the final rainbow mana sword equipped oddly, it dose not work with the purple sword. And the last thing, if you at above double jump height and you run or fall off a ledge, if you flick the analog stick you can grab fey and float. And the targeting system I think I've found out, is not related to the direction your facing so much as how close objects or enemies are near you which is why it feels frustrating, you really have to aim the camera to target, also worth noting is the whip has a wind box at the end, if you don't grapple something, it will slightly move the object This game begs to be replayed and challenges your patience witch buries the game. the mana series has been my favorite series all my life and I've played every entry extensively, I even own an English rom copy of Sieken densetsu 3 on a snes cartridge. I still have my original copy of secret and that was my first game. This game needs to be improved dramatically, it really is a disappointment in a lot of aspects. Had this game not have been rushed by square, and it was rushed hard, so much that the Japanese reliese could even come to the states, it might have been better. We have an improved version apparently. But I just wanted to mention some things that do help the gameplay experience. And once you unlock the medals the game shows more promise. I was and and still am disappointed to, but if I can atleast help give it some legs, I'll try. But as far all the other aspects, they are non defendable (story, characters, depth, miss use of iconic characters) . But I can have a lot of fun and once you master the targeting and physics you have unique game experience, just takes a lot of practice. Also I wanted to point out, if you stay idle an arrow will help navigate, you can brake guards with rolls, and send objects flying with rolling.the blue dots are objects or enemies with items. And if you score a high combo when you kill an enemy regardless of panic, you will get candy or magic drops indefinitely, like scoring a combo in legend lets your character pose and a candy pops out. I know practically the ins and out of legend to pet growth in stats to goloms and land placement, how to really get the most out of each game in the series. Dawn isn't hopeless just different and lacking in my opinion. Just wanted to help give some positive outlook to the game. To help it not be as much of a disappointment. Secret will always be my favorite, and with adventures of mana, it's fantastic to see the sieries get some love. I hope I could atleast provide some useful information.

Are you limited to equip a surthen amount of emblems at one time or are they auto equiped when you buy them (with other words, can you equip them all at the same time)? EDIT: and can these be used outside of the arena into the 'story mode'?

Great music, beautiful esthetic, fun looking brainless hack n slash gameplay ...... why the F**** would they remove your char progress each chapter ..... WHY? I ASK YOU

Probably because as you said, it's a brainless hack and slash, so it wouldn't really matter.

When I played Dawn of Mana I loved the gameplay. It was very fun and I was too young to see how bad the story was. Still I love this game and it's one of my favorites. Standalone I think it's pretty good and worth at least a play through. The bout arena game mode is also really fun. I still wish we could have this rereleased. Id love to play Dawn of Mana with a buddy co op.

So, let's say I want to get into the Mana games. Is it fair to say, to not get disappointed by story, one should play the games prior to this one, NOT this one, and none after?

Yeah, like I went over in the review, the gameplay isn't very good and has some rather questionable mechanics. If the gameplay was better and it still had a crap story, I probably would have recommended it as I value gameplay more. But the controls and mechanics aren't that great. Should you ever get into the Mana series I would recommend playing Sword of Mana or Secret of Mana first, then depending on how much you like those games give Legend of Mana a try. An online guide wouldn't be a bad idea either for Legend of Mana, as the game dose have some flaws, but I find the good out ways the bad for me with that game.

No PAL version :/ i was actually kinda interested in this game (I found out that one of the emblems lets you save all your progression/upgrades throughout all the chapters all the time).

"The manasword, like the Triforce in Zelda is an important piece of the series' lore." If only the Zelda series had an iconic weapon that also got it's own prequel game to compare to ...

Interesting that there are other games in the series before this and after Trials of Mana, but in Japan they called this one Seiken Densetsu 4...why, wouldn't the PS1 game be more worthy?

This feels so different from the first three games. It’s like the Mana series’ version of Breath of Fire’s Dragon Quarter. Can these game really call itself a sequel to their respective mainline series if their gameplay mechanics are so far removed from them?

I never had the chance of playing Dawn of Mana but I believe the game had the same problem, consequence as Legend of Mana, it was rushed and main focus is only on the visuals and music, because gameplay and story are just boring...let's hope the new Trials of Mana remake will be MUCH BETTER! Good review!

Good review, tho there is one thing you forgot to mention, and that's the fact that the game-play for Dawn of Mana is inspired by the Kingdom Hearts games, even the enemies/bosses' health bars are very similar to Kingdome Hearts (paticuly Kingdom Hearts 2).

I always wondered why there never was PAL version of this... seeing this I wouldn't want to put money on it either to release it. Very very low key for a title of Mana.. what were they thinking? Quality is some lost over the years with some games. Some should stay burried

I am here from farther future than other future guy, I am still going to throw this in the Batocera emulator I am making with 256gb flashdrives from Samsung that are only 17.99 on Amazon! Also we have artificial intelligence, nuclear batteries, a collapsing American nation, and are on the cusp of achieving true Nuclear Fusion which will change the world (For The Wealthy). Anyways, greetings from 2024 past citizens!

What's the point of spoiling/retelling majority of story in the game review especially in the beginning? If you wanna give a feel for the story you can do it in much much more subtle ways. Peace and good luck.

Playing it right now. Thing about me, i dont really care about reviews - i check for myself. It led me to find out i actually really like the games considered bad - like shadow the hedgehog, drakengard, and castlevania 64 are flawed but just that kind of flawed where i dont really care about it since it delivered on everything else i like. So i expected dawn of mana to be this kind of flawed but fun game. It wasnt fun. I hate it. It is so droll and boring. I even hate the music because it keeps blaring the same happy tunes when im murdering everything, such a dissonance. The armies of enemies make it feel like a cheap korean mmo or a muso. I despise how theres NO variety in gameplay, no towns, no npcs, no sidequests, goddamn, and the combat is SO overcomplicated. I dont need this Havok crap! You can drop a barell on an enemy, whoop ti doo. Its not fun once its an OBLIGATION. Shadow the hedgehog had a simple fun combat with OPTIONAL chaos powers. Drakengards camera is bad but at least the maps are almost completely devoid from any obstacles. Look. I dont mind tropey stories. Beyond good and evil has a very tropey story too. But it also had fun characters, exciting setpieces, the world that feels truly alive instead of an obstacle course with countless monsters (how tf is that village so happy, theyre SURROUNDED with BLOOD THIRSTY ANIMALS), the story happens in the gameplay and not just cutscenes, holy moly this game's flaws are too much. Too much. The only thing keeps me going is the art and the fact that i study bad storytelling for fun. (Also they use the font drakengard uses sometimes which is hilarious to me)
