Having the same problem. You were the first idea I found. I will look and see if I somehow am using the wrong cord, which could have happened when we recently moved and all the technology was disconnected and moved. Maybe I got one device's cord on another device. Thanks for making a short helpful video with a good visual overlay.

I had the same issue year a ago. I had 2 other Sony cables that went to a camera I had. If the controller battery was fairly charged up it would charge, but if I was down to 2 bars it wouldn't unless I went to the original PS3 cable. This happens to many other devices as well. Apple devices are infamous for that especially the power adapters.

Thanks! I can't believe this was my problem... I actually tried two different cables when it first crapped out on me and neither of them worked so I assumed it was something else. After pressing the reset button several times and taking my controller apart to take a look, I decided to try one last cable I had lying around and it worked. Don't dismiss this seemingly obvious solution. It might just work for you like it did for me.

Your video was the only video that worked for me... I can't imagine how many times I tried to reset the controller and it did not work... yet all along... all I had to do was switch the USB cable... Man thanx.

Simple but true, this was the cause of my PS3 not charging. Even after replacing the batteries, it would not charge even with the cables supplied with the new batteries. I don't get why some cables don't work, but I'm just glad they stopped using these cables as I don't seem to have this issue with other USB type cables.

I'm glad to see that I'm not the only idiot who was experiencing this problem. All along I thought I was using the stock charger, but I must've accidentlly switched them out at some point. I was ready to call SONY support, which wouldve just probably irritated me more. Thanks for the video. Especially the part about the "thicker" USB cable. That's what saved the day.

I lost my charger

Cool thank you for your help. I previously lost my ps3 stock cable and bought a generic charger so I can use the cable from the generic controller. I tried to use the cable from the generic controller to charge the PS3 controller. The generic cable, however, would not charge the PS3 controller, probably because it was not a charging cable. To use a charging cable, I used an old cable probably for a digital camera since I could not find my stock ps3 cable. It looks like it charges now.

I am so glad I checked this out as have 2 contollers which had 1 bar each and found out they were not charging with the lead they came with. so I tried the thicker cable and now they charge fine. nice one mate.

You may have included that the stock cable that comes with your PS3 (charging), has that "B" on it along with being thicker.

That just pissed me off like nothing ever has before.

Thankfully I watched this vid having bought an unofficial cable from an auction website as I had misplaced my original. The copy worked whilst plugged in but wouldn't charge the controller. The original which I eventually found did charge the controller. Not as stupid a video as you might think.

I wouldn't be having this problem if Sony weren't being money whores and provided a charger cable when I bought a new controller. So fucking retared how you spend £40 on a controller and they don't give you a cable to go with it. This is the most fucked up video I've ever seen. You'd have to be reatrded to find this useful.

If there is indeed an issue with the controller battery internally, there is a years warranty to cover this. The controllers purchased independantly of the console are covered with the store it was purchased from.

I have a bunch of cables. They all work. I have a 4 port usb cable, 1 plug in and 4 out and it also works with 4 controllers, but I couldn't plug in both the game controllers into it. I had to plug in the moves and the and one of the dealys that you buy with the moves. I have 5 controllers charging off of the ps3 at one time now, 2 moves, 2 game controllers, and 1 of the nunchuck dealys.

The Problem with mine is, Even the stock Charge Cable won't work with my Controller. Does anyone have any tips? Also, The same Cord works with the spare controller I got last christmas. So is it a Dead Controller? I sure hope not, damn thing cost me £25.

To those whose controllers not charge. It could be that you have mistreated your controller by using it for a while then charging after even though it does not need charge making it slowly adjust to charging only the little that is left making your controller slowly hold less charge

You can use the shorter usb cables with a pc and it charges it. Just not directly connected to a PS3 like shown in the video.

The red light on top is not blinking because it's already fully charged it will only blink when it's battery has been drained indicating it's charging if you keep it plugged into the ps3 the battery will never go dead

Holy shit, I can't believe this is the fix. I've spent days switching around batteries and cables trying to get my controllers working. I tried the sony cable first and I think the batteries were so flat they didn't start charging straight away so assumed it wasn't that. My guy, you're a lifesaver. Fuck Sony.

So my PS3 kiosk cable (the long one with the weight that comes with the kiosk) won't work with controller. Not sure if the kiosk cable is just not meant for my controller or dead battery. Guess I'll have to buy both another cable and battery. *sigh*

YES u can use a phone charger cable & YES it will charge your controllers for older PS2 or PS3 . BUT the charger cable MUST be a USB 2.0 Mini-B5-pin on one end & a 2.0 Type A on the other end. DO NOT GET MICRO charger cables this is for new PS4 or PS5.

You need a cable that can transmit data. A lot of mini usb cables can’t.

Yes this helped!! Weird thing is I was using a blue cable that worked fine for months and then all of a sudden wouldn't charge. Switched it out with a black one for a couple seconds then my controller magically charged again. Now using my blue USB cable for charging controllers works again. Very strange

Going to give this a try. Not sure if I have an OG cable though.
