PS4 Controller Sync NOR Flash Corruption Repair 3/3 - Dumping, Fixing, Flashing and Testing

Күн бұрынThis video is part 3 of a 3 part series detailing the repair of the PS4 Controller Sync fault when caused by a corruption of the Flash-Main IC rather than a fault caused by a physical failure of the Bluetooth / WiFi module.
In part 3 of this series we cover how to dump your PS4 NOR flash chip using the programmer hardware we built in Parts 1 & 2 within Windows. We then open these dumps, identify the corruption, repair the corrupt area before erasing and re-programing our PS4 NOR flash chip ready for re-installation. We test everything at the end to show it works and we are back gaming once again!

I watched all the episodes and found them fascinating. I currently have a playstation 4 that is experiencing the same thing. I plan on doing what you described in the lot of videos to get the system back up and running. Thanks for taking the time to explain all the details of this endeavor.

you bailed me out of jail yet again..Bought a ps4 from a pawn shop with this issue and it took me a bit, but i finally got it.. ps4 is up and running.. thanks to you.. AGAIN.. I wish you were living in the states.. I would drive..swim..fly..travel to where you're locate just to give you a dap..You are our final hope when it comes to ps4 resurrection

Help please, I connect everything well, I have programmed the teensy, it has its assigned com, but when I go to see the info to get the dump from the nor ps4 the same thing, I get the error "Pining Teensy ... Ping failed (expected v0.20, got v0.40) "And I don't know how to check that, I have checked the welds and each pin soldered with its point is correct, I even have the tiny voltage regulator that is soldered below 5v to 3.3v , with the dot 3.3v dotted and I don't know what else to try ... The same thing happens to me when dumping a nand memory of ps3, in that case the ps3 says that the size cannot be read

I had my first of these in yesterday. I find soldering easy and have an abundance of parts so was quite happy to replace the wifi module. Didn't work however. Guess I've got a couple of hours of you educating me ahead. 😂

I can't get 3 identical original Firmware dumps from the Macronix IC. I've checked the connection countless times and even replaced the GPIO pins with new ones, the issue remained. Should I proceed without them?

My controller is working when i unplugged the ps4 for a while, and not all the time, i also can't boot in safe mode but when the controller works with the ps4 it's working fine. also if I restart the ps4 after the controller worked it won't work again, it's a 1216b, i have tried to remove the bluetooth chip from the motherboard with a rework station but i failed (no damage)

i have an issue where the controller for my ps4 works on my ps3 via usb but wont work on my ps4 and both controllers won't turn on but i have a third controller that works fine. what could be my problem

hey Andy,thanks for your tutorial. i recently did this last week but i used a combination of your tut and the raspberrypi3/jaispi method to dump and rewrite my nor. at first it worked great id,dump,erase,rewrite,verify but when i soldered the nor back i got no power. thought it was my supply but it checked out on meter so i desoldered the nor and dump it and hex showed many errors. Ac1d software shows errors in the original dump so i thought the software didnt give me an accurate dump. but the more i read on google alot of this software is proto and put together with chewing gum so i erased the chip again wrote the repaired image dumped it again and still errors. jaispi has a command that will only rewrite sectors that are different. used this command until i saw no more sectors written then dumped the chip again and compared it to the fixed image and ctrl-k showed they were identical. soldered back the nor and my ps4 came to life. all is restored and i was playing odin sphere after years of using the dead ps4 to prop open my window.

The dumps still are not identical, no matter how many times I try. The microcontroller is recognised, so it should be connecting fine. The only difference is that the Chinese seller provided another SOIC to DIP adapter which does have 16 connectors but also has 16 pins coming from it as well instead of the amount you have. I used your lay-out for it and my PC recognise my chip. I am at wit's end over here Perhaps it would be possible to directly solder wires from the chip legs to the pins connected to my Teensy board. Which pins of the chip would I need to solder to which coloured wires? Would it be the same as the diagram you showed us in the first episode? Perhaps it isn't due to the adaptor but due to something else. I have no clue.

Have you come across a firmware error of SU-30641-4? It won't download the update file and gives you that error. It won't accept a firmware update from USB as it immediately gives you this error. I have swapped drives and immediately we get the same issue. Any idea what is required to fix this issue?

Hello! I want to ask you for advice, I have a console that loads the controller, but it doesn't connect to the console even in safe mode. From what you think it can be, the wi-fi module or nor flash corruption. As for what you do, keep it up, you do an excellent job, especially since we are also learning.

have an odd one for you...working on my forth console with this issue, i was able to get all the way to the point where i erase the chip where i am greeted with the dreaded 'Device is write-protected' message. info and dump work fine, but not erase or write. i have a replacement chip on order (only $4 us) but figured i'd bounce this one off you.

We are coming to the end of the cycle of ps4 lifespans, so now I find myself interested in getting in depth into the board layout. Hi, I have dumped the flash about 9 times now and every time they seem to get corrupted and do not match. How should I proceed? Does electromagnetic interference cause this issue?

Hello Andrew just a question I did all the step and everything is going great. The problem I have is my original dump have multiples ffff on different blocks, you will see the ff ff in along block then a normal few lines and then again ffffff like it skip in different blocks. My file size is sab 001 452764bytes it doesn't have where the offset should begin in the files. This ps4 wont update it has a continue loop when try to update firmware. Much help appreciated thanks always

hello, cordial greeting friend, I have a problem with my teensy, the computer recognizes it and allows the hex file to be injected for spiway, but when I modify it with the 3.3v regulator and cut the 5v pad, my computer does not even recognize it com ports appear. In conclusion, it works as it comes from the factory, but when I modify it with 3.3v my computer stops recognizing it.

If you haven't already, I'd try another regulator to see if it's an issue with the component itself.

There is no way without heating solder ! It can only be done on the 10x-11x consoles with the Macronix MX25L25635FMI-10G, but you would have to lift the Vcc pin and isolate it from the solder pad, or cut the trace on the back of the board before dumping it onboard and then resolder the pin or trace (see www.psdevwiki.com/ps4/MX25L25635FMI-10G for location), and the clip most likely wont fit through the metal cover, so you will need to disassemble the console enough to remove the main board (or expand the hole in the cover, which will be hard to do mounted without leaving metal pieces that can cause shorts on the board, but hey, with small shears and upside down you might get lucky). That being said, the pins ARE fragile, and shorting nearby pins while desoldering the one IS an actual risk so I FAR FROM RECOMMEND THAT approach ! If you want to do it onboard, cut and resolder the trace ! (Heck, put a switch on it for future operations) A clip is not as stable as mounts for desoldered chips, like the one shown in the video, but as long as you're only dumping that should cause no danger, just tripple check your dumps.

What's the model number there? If it's the newer slim (CUH-2xxx) then probably not going to have those for a while until they start filtering into indy repair - most will be in warranty for a good few months yet.

Hey mate, before month or two I wrote on other video to say that would try metod of changing bluetooth chip. I tried it and it won't work. Now I am willing to try this metod. One question. I have already some programmators for this kind of chips - my question, do I still need this tenessy thing or I can unsoldier rom from board, plug it in programmator and write it? Well, got the right teensy this time, dumped the chip, every dump is identical, but no one of the templates match in size with the extracted file from orig0. Strangely, the c002000001 seems intact, no blocks of fs, instead badly corrupted files are cid.bin, scevtrm0.bin , scevtrm1.bin and unk.bin

Does the console power up when attempting to offer up a disc to the drive or via controller? On the 1200 machines, I've seen this symptom several times and it is as a result of a defective Bluetooth / WiFi module - might be worth lifting it off the board and seeing if it will then power up.

unfortunately no. the only thing you could do is dump the chip and have it as a backup in case you ever needed a new nor replacement chip.

I have to ask can I solder small magnet wires to the chip straight on the mainboard and to the teensy I have CUH-1215A needing repair and were I live it is hard to run my SMD Rework station without blowing a breaker

You can likely get away with that to be honest. I've heard some potential issues around that behaviour (on older SAA/SAB boards) however someone recently asked the same question after trying several times on an SAC board and it worked fine. I always prefer to play it safe (after all these consoles don't belong to me, they belong to my customers) and therefore always take the extra step to remove it. Chances are you'll be fine though.

It doesn't have one - it has an SMC (System Management Controller) which is incorporated as part of the Southbridge (which is interchangeable). Hence you only need to swap APU / NAND and BD-ROM logic board. The NAND however is a pain in the arse to swap as it has very small solder balls - much better to dump the bad motherboard NAND and re-write it to the NAND of the donor motherboard to save a lot of hassle!

How about a nand flash from the bad board to avoid that? Can the apu be re keyed to avoid that also? software is much easier that physical swapouts.

That's what I was talking about below - dump the NAND from the bad board and re-flash it across to the good then all you'd need to do is swap the APU. It cannot be re-keyed sadly - I believe it's burned into the silicon to avoid such activity.

If you're sure the bad board isn't bad because of a bad APU / Syscon or bad/corrupt flash then you need to remove the APU / NOR and Syscon ICs from the bad board, reball its APU and then remove the same chips from the good board - those can be discarded. Then reinstall the reballed APU / Syscon and NOR chips from the bad board onto the good one. You'll need to transfer over the daughterboard from the console with the bad motherboard over to the now 'good' console also. SAA / SAB revision boards and parts should be interchangeable from my experiences. SAC -> SAC will work fine also, but what you cannot do is SAA / SAB -> SAC and visa-versa.

First of all, thank you for sharing all this information. I dumped my nor chip (had corruption), modified and reflashed it. Controller still wont sync, I believe someone has worked on this before and think the BT/wifi module has been replaced before (poorly done), is it possible that my module is faulty? Is there a way i can check? Also error SU-41283-8 when trying to update to anything above 3.55

If it looks to have been reworked then it's probably been destroyed by the repair attempt. The issue as you found will have been firmware all along but someone probably just atempted to reflow it and reflow it until they sadly killed it. WIll most probably now require a module swap. v4 and above do update firmware for the bluetooth - this error may be down to the fact that the console cannot communicate with the module.

Which is the rom on the daughterboard and would it have to be removed as it is an smd chip? Also on xb1 is the apu,nand and dauhterboard all keyed to one another?

The daughterboard ROM is the Renesas SCEI IC but that's not the IC you're dumping as part of this procedure - the one you're dumping as part of this video series is the MXIC ROM by the Southbridge. On XB1 it is indeed APU / NAND and BD-ROM Logic Board which are paired.

Hey there m8, awesome work and really educational video, so i want your opinion on something. Lately i got my hands to a banned console. I watched the video and i think that's possible to change both the Mac address and the serial number. However, i do not know in witch separate .bin that information is stored, Do you have any ideas? Do you think it's too risky to change that information in order of bricking the device? Cheers

It's all internally verified and encrypted so sadly it's not that easy - until we can decrypt flash (which means having the private key ergo cracking the console wide open from a security standpoint) that won't happen. I don't think it ever will either - doesn't seem to be anyone working on PS4 as far as I know.

You can change the IC providing you write your firmware dump to the chip first otherwise you'll just end up with the BLOD. You can't just solder another machine's NOR - it won't work.

My ps4 syncs fine but after 15 mins it disconnects and the remote acts as if I were to press all the buttons at ounce. I tried a different controller and got the same behavior. It's random. Any ideas?

If the antenna cable is secure on the push-fit connector, then it's likely that the WiFi / Bluetooth module itself has started to fail.

@@AndrewPaul I looked into it and the only game the client uses is cod . I looked into the games and they have a bug where it disconnects all bluetooth and makes as if all the buttons on the controller are being pressed all at ounce. Plus he has the game on an external hard drive. I told him delete the application (game) and reinstall on the console and make sure you get the latest version and firmware for the game.

Hello Paul i'm fan of you ! :D But i have a problem with my dump i don't find the templates for patch my NOR dump. My controller does not synchronize with the console when the system is installed. I'm sure my dump is good because I check it at least 50 times by taking each thread etc ... My dump C0020001.bin is 433029bytes. Thank you for these videos. I've been working through them to fix a CUH-1116A PS4 with error SU-30631-3. I've managed to get the dump and opened it but the corrupted part is not in the C0020001.bin. On mine I have corruption in the cid.bin, scevtrm0.bin, scevtrm1.bin and Unk.bin areas. Do you know if these parts replacable from another dump or are they unique to the console?

This error is down to corruption usually inside the C0010001 and C0018001 containers. I'm also planning a video on repairing soft-bricked consoles (NOR-based BLOD) so watch this space.

There's not really the possibility of this sadly - unless you have a good dump before it goes bad. Like the PS4, the biggest part of the ROM is encrypted but I could do a tutorial on dumping a good ROM for backup and restore purposes.

How you are using the COM3 port? how is the ps4 plugged into the computer? there is no single video about it

The PS4 isn't plugged into the PC - the Teensy board is via USB and operates as a virtual COM port device. The NOR ROM from the PS4 is connected to the Teensy via a programming socket so will need to be removed from the motherboard first.

That was the most needed information for me, first of all i thought there is a usb port on that NOR Rom, than i thought u use raspberry pi.. Googled this teensy board now and its pretty cheap, maybe worth a try because my ps4 is broke otherwise and it cant get more broken^^

Hey Andrew, thanks again for the tutorial, do you have the firmware for SAC 4.x please ? I have a ps4 on 4.07 with DHSM-PS97, C0020001.bin of this bluetooth chip on firmware 4.07 has a size of 431685o, the one provided in the download link has a size of 431614o

Hello Andrew I think I seen all ur videos so far great men. I working on a console right now and I follow all ur steps but when doing the step to get info off chip in spiway it say the follow. Spiway.py is not recognized as an internal or external command,operable program or batch file. What u think could be wrong. Teensy is recognize com3. Thanks

Follow all the steps in part 2 to setup SPIWay and the dependencies - it sounds like you haven't navigated to the folder where SPIWay is extracted to within command prompt.

hi Andres, I have a similar problem, I can not pass that screen "ps press burton" but my control is synchronize stays in white light, I can turn on the ps 4 with control (wireless) and I can use it in safe mode(usb), but in os mode asks me " to use this device, connecting it using a uSB cable or record it again "but press ps button and nothing happens, be my chip wifi / bluetooth chip or north ????? I already gave reste controls and initializes the PS4 and nothing, any ideas?

Reset your controller too. failing that it'll either be as this video or an antenna / module failure.

Hi andrew, i extracted the C0020001 file from a SAB-001 motherboard with teensy as in your video, the file size is 452.764 bytes but i cannot find this size in the templates, can you please help me identify what file i need to use? Thanks for sharing your work with us =)

Yes - container sizes changed for v4.0 firmware and above. I do have the file for SAA/SAB boards - I'll upload it ASAP.

Hi Andrew and thanks for your awesome work! Unfortunately I have faced some problem when trying to flash or even erase the chip. SPI information is perfect and I can see Macronix (0xc2) MX25L25635F (0x18) but below I have something like this: Erasing chip... Device is write-protected! Error erasing chip! Done. The same when I try flash the chip. If anyone have some ideas what can be wrong, please help. Thank you in advance.

Check Pin 3 (WP#) of the NOR is properly connected as this is the write-protect pin. If it's not connected, or not connected securely then you may end up with this issue.

Thank you for your quick reply :) I have checked it twice (also re-soldered it) and everything is connected securely but the problem still remains. What is strange, that few minutes ago I was able to 'erasechip' and was done correctly. But now again I can't read or write anything :/ the issue still persists. Thanks

is the wire also secure at the Teensy end / wire test for continuity OK (i.e. cable break on that pin for example?)

double checked and no loose wires/ test for continuity OK! Another strange thing is that I have flashed this chip previously and I have done it while VCC was disconnected otherwise I had error with connection. Now I don't have this error with VCC connected/disconnected but is write protected all the time. Thanks for your advice Andrew.

Thank you, however as I've not had need for one I've never bought or built one. To be fair unless for a board chip swap there's not really much need for dumping / reflashing NAND as there's not much we can do with the contents.

Contents from bad board to good board to avoiding swapping out that chip.once you have the rig and do it a few times,it could go pretty quick.i now do the hard drives in less than 5 minutes.start to finish.

They should be enabled - at least it shows that they are for me in YT Studio, which is odd as they're not showing when the video plays. I'll see what I can do to get them working.

Move the Renesas chip over from the bad blueray board to the good one. You can't change anything like that in flash as it's all per-box encrypted.

As above move Renesas from bad to good board and use with the good main board. If the Renesas if the reason that board is bad though you're out of luck.

Like you know how your frustrated with the controller not connecting to the ps4. That one in the video that had the problem connecting to the controller before you fixed it in part 3. This is my question. Did you try connecting it to other devices like your phone or computer and it worked or did it not work with anything including the ps4? Thanks for replying!

Hi, Yes the controller in the video is my personal controller and worked fine with other consoles beforehand.

Wait but I don't get it. How do you know if it's not the bluetooth in the ps4 that's not working then? How'd you come up with this? Like I've seen that you created a video about the bluetooth in the ps4 not working and fixing that. Like how do you know if it's the controller or ps4? And do you have another ps4 controller besides the one in your video that would connect with your personal ps4?

Can you tell me how this works exactly? Florin said they had a DHSM-PS97 with a size of 432,158. You mentioned updating the templates, but when I check there is only one file for DHSM-PS97 and it's 431,614 bytes. I'm worried, I have a board that needs a new flash. I haven't been able to extract it yet, but the firmware that was attempted to flash was for v5.00. I have a SAC-001 board and I know my chip is a AW-NB218 v1.1. But there is only one file in there. Should there be more files, for different firmware versions? I don't want to invest all of this time extracting the firmware if I don't know where to find the correct firmware. I appreciate all you've done with this, I'm hoping to be able to resurrect a dead PS4, but I need to invest in a hot air rework station and other things and I don't want to do all that to find out nobody has the correct firmware for this board/version. Thanks!

It needs to be a Teensy for SPIWay but if you've a BIOS programmer which will support the MX chip then it should dump it OK.
