If consoles are your gateway to exploring fantastic new worlds then your controller is the key that opens that gate. So getting the right controller that’s comfortable to use, fully featured, and durable has for some become as important as which console to buy. Enter Sony’s Dual Sense Edge, a $200 customizable and somewhat modular controller with enough new features that Sony hopes serious gamers will be willing to splurge a little extra for. With additional buttons, adjustable triggers, and the ability to create different profiles, it seems like Sony has thought of everything. And with modular thumb sticks, could it be that they’ve also considered repairability? Let’s find out.

When I got the announcement email, I was interested. And then I saw the price. The biggest downfall is one of its most praised features, the sticks. Sure, they're easily repairable if you get drift, but if they were that concerned, why didn't they just switch to Hall Effect sticks instead. They're selling you the problem and the solution when they could just not sell the problem to begin with.

I already heard from some people owning the Edge controller that the battery life is a lot shorter. This is very unfortunate since otherwise I would love the controller. This is the main reason I don't want to buy it myself, and it just doesn't sound like an expensive upgrade if the battery lasts for a lot shorter time. In my opinion an upgrade should have the same specs or better, not this much worse. It is a big difference, almost 50% less battery.

One of my good friends and her sister picked up a couple of them. They said those controllers are the best ones they've ever used. Worth the 400 she dumped on them. From how they feel, to button mapping, weight, trigger adjustment switches, and repairability, I hear nothing but positives. Considering getting myself one. "I know why they called it Dualsense EDGE. It gives you an edge in any game over anyone using the regular Dualsense once you learn how to really use it." and "The entire way the controller is charged, length, and type of cable, and locking mechanism will go a long way in preventing wear out which is top tier for the price point." (They had worn out their original PS5 DualSense charging cables within 5 months of getting the console because they prefer staying wired rather than wireless. They also wore out 3 Dualsense controllers over drift issues caused by: Reaching POT's rated cycle life for her, and "Cheeto dust" for her sister which was said in jest as they're both clean freaks.) They're gamers to the core so if they say it's good, it's good.

It's really cool to see Hall effect sensors in the triggers. That said, we've already seen this 10 years ago with the Xbox One (and now Series) controllers. It gets even less impressive when you remember that the Sega Saturn 3D controller had Hall sensing technology in their triggers and thumbstick back in 1996. Apparently a handful of Dualshock 3 variants supposedly had Hall sensing sticks as well. Seriously, these manufacturers need to stop messing around.

At this point repairability is just a marketing point. Yes you can replace the thumb stick. But in the meantime they upsold you by more than 100% on the controller, and by having a "module" instead of a design that has in mind replacement parts, they are upselling you even on the 20$ replacement

My dualsense edge fell and the left stick is broken, the replacement module is sold out in my region and as far as I can tell, everywhere else too. I have a question you might be able to answer. I bought 2 replacement pots, one has hall effect, one doesn't, later today I'll be going back to the repair shop that suggested buying the replacement pot to have them switched out, will the haul effect pot work in the dualsense edge? As far as I can tell the dimensions and prongs are all exactly the same size as the original broken pot. Thoughts?

Can you do a comparison of the rubber underlining of the face buttons with the edge and regular DualSense? I feel like in the two edge controllers the face buttons have felt way different and not in a good way. I also see a lot of people saying the same thing. What’s the cause for this?

By far one the of better efforts towards repairability. I would have preferred an easy to swap battery and opening the device to change the sticks, which would be a rare occurence if they were hall effect sensors. I think the idea is to market a variety of sticks with different charectiristics. I still feel a sawpable compenent like keyboard caps would waste less plastic on sticks' hot swap case.

I would be so happy when hall effect sensors for thumbsticks become available. Just hope it doesn't cost too much. Guilikit says they're going to make it, firstly for the Edge before a complete controller, but I've not seen anything yet. As for the Edge's battery that is pitiful IMO. I get just about 3 hours per time use with mine. Notwithstanding the Edge is way better than the standard controller from my experience. The standard one last just 2 weeks use for me before it started drifting. I have the Edge now about 2 months now playing approx 6-8 hours every day with no issues other than the battery life. Great critique BTW. I agree with all.

Common sense here - due to the amount of hardware added to the existing size of the controller they had no choice but to shrink the battery to fit it all in. Alternatively they could have used a higher density battery pack which holds more power in the same physical size. Only other option would be to increase the controller size to compensate for a larger battery. It’s also a pity the stock stick caps attach via plastic clips whereas the Xbox elite uses metal and magnets, however the edge has replaceable sticks instead. Sony should have used Hall effect sticks as well or have them as a genuine option. Overall I like the heftier and heavier feel despite the shorter run time. Hopefully a V2 of the edge has a higher capacity battery like the rumoured dual sense v2.

My only problem right now is the lack of Medium Stick Caps. They have small by default and then high, but not medium 🥲

I bought one just for those replaceable joysticks. I'm willing to pay more to reduce my e-waste. Finding out they're pots is very disappointing but what's this about gulikit replacements? Is there a link somewhere?

Can someone explain to me why joystick drift is an issue now and not in the past? For example, I’m still using my original PS4 controller from 2013 with no issues, it’s been 10 years and it still works fine. Also, I’ve never heard of joystick drift with PS3 or Wii controllers…etc.

If they had used Hall sensors instead of pots, I would have purchased this to use to control robots. What's this about third party joysticks? Maybe I will buy it.

"Why battery smaller" Its that or having a bigger controller, it clearly couldn't fit a bigger one internally without extreme differences in body

Hall effect is not the answer to potentiometers tbh. I used a hall effect controller for a few months, it feels strangely linear or something. I can't put my finger on it, but I wasn't able to play the same as the resistance on a potentiometer. (The controller I had was a gullikit kk2 - I use the edge now, but the USB port is loose so I need to disassemble it)

This controller reminds me of something.. I can't quite put my finger on it. Something from the past. Something old. I know I've seen this before. The faint sound of _elite_ echoes for a moment then is gone just as fast. I know I've seen this before.

Just seeing the size difference in MaH shows lesser usage time.
