We give some tips and tricks for dealing with tight tire and rims. More rims are becoming tubeless ready and many riders have a problem changing tires or changing tubes. We discuss techniques to get the tire deep into the rim channel as well as discussing what rim strip you should be using on tubeless ready rims to make it easier to change flats

if it was that easy to get the bead off I wouldn't be watching videos for suggestions!

Tip: Before mounting your tire, apply a thin coat of petroleum jelly to the inside of the rim. Next time the bead will slide right off from its rail and into the center channel when you push on it with your thumbs. That will allow your tire lever to slide under the bead.

After about an hour and taking long breaks I finally broke the seal to the rim. I had to do it with the tire on the ground and using my feet on the opposite side of the rim to get enough force. Pushing against a grip. I heard a pop. Finally But it’s not over.

I've been trying all week, I don't have any more strength for trying. I'll probably end up knifing the tyre.

I got a pair of tubeless ready rims with clinchers tires on and I can't really get off the bead no matter what I do

Really helpful - thank you. The tip about making sure the tyre bead was in the centre of the rim made all the difference. That hadn’t occurred to me. I’m grateful to you. :-)

Thank you! - I never knew it could be so hard to get a tire off... Thought it was glued in place, untill I watched this.

Hi, what about not being able to break the bead. My tyre he’s been into a vice and still won’t come away from the bead. Several you tube videos in and NO ONE is helping!!

I would have preferred to see you fitting a new tyre. Something like a handmade Challenge Strada Bianca htlr.

had to cut my mavic tubless tire from the equivalent mavic rim with a sidecitter 🤬. couldn't remove it even with e lever after one side was already out. the schwalbe tire i replaced it with seems to have bigger tolerance and was easy to mount. i think this particular roadbike rim has just not enough space in the center pu push the tire down. maybe only a problem for small diameters??

I love mtb tubeless! Im still using ghetto (split tube tubeless) on my MTBs and ‘cross bikes. Ive never had a failure in 15 years!! I run my tires anywhere from 18 psi off road to as high as 50 psi on roads. Tire sizes from 33c - 2.4”. Just about all my rides see some dirt. LOWER PRESSURE is where its at for long rides over 4 hours! At my shop we dont recommend road tubeless. We hate it with a passion and it stinks! Here are reasons not to bother: 1. If you get a flat, (you will & at the worst time) getting the tire off, installing tube and tire back on out in the field will be a nightmare. BRING EXTRA CO2s and a REAL PUMP!!!Bring a phone!!You will probably break multiple levers and definitely hurt your hands. All road tubeless need to be extremely tight to hold high air pressure. Some are so tight weve broken kevlar beads! 2. We have maybe 50% success rate setting up tubeless road, 50% of our customers WILL be and ARE dissatisfied. 3. Use of high pressures ( anything over 80 psi) make it much harder to obtain or maintain the sealing ability of the tire. You can have a decent sealing tire initially, then you get a small puncture or cut and instead of self healing like it should, sealant keeps coming out of the hole due to high pressures. 4. Dont drink the Koolaide. Ignore marketing claims. Read reviews, get users feedback etc. Many tubeless products fail miserably at their claim of being ‘ tubeless ready’. Its marketing speak for ‘it might work tubeless’! If you must have road tubeless, fit the biggest tires that will SAFELY fit your frame, OR get a more PRACTICAL bike! 30c and bigger, inflated to no more than 60-70 ride MUCH MORE comfortably, get awesome traction, brake and handle better and reduce punctures, cuts and road damage. You really dont sacrifice rolling resistance (its been proven) much if youre riding normally rough roads. You can only safely and comfortably run pressure over 100psi on very smooth roads and velodromes, Non existent here in Wackofornia!Otherwise you are needlessly beating yourself up, compromising traction and safety. If youre considering upgrading to change wheels to road tubeless and spending big money on high end wheels, DONT BOTHER! You will be much more satisfied investing in high quality tubulars. But ONLY if youre pushing your tires to the limits of traction! Modern clinchers(even with tubes) have come pretty close to the performance of tubs. NEVER BUY cheap tubulars!!! Cheap model tubs are nothing but flat prone! You will need to spend near $100 per tire for quality ones, a little more than high end clinchers. Make sure they are glued properly and safely!!!!!! Because of the closed top rim, they can be built much lighter. Tubulars conform to the ground better, Because of their profile and construction. Good quality tubs rarely suffer flats before theyre 70% worn, at least mine never did and I rode them on dirt roads and smoother trails frequently! DONT overinflate your tires!! Most cyclists do!experiment with lower pressures to find your sweet spot, but as you ride over obstacles, railroad tracks etc, get your weight off saddle and use your arms and legs as shock absorbers. If you are a large or heavier person get larger heavier tires!!! Personally, I ignore pressure recommendations on the sides of tires, but I recommend CAUTION!Im a pretty average rider of 160-170 lbs.
