Just for the sake of info: NEC is a Japanese company mostly well known for info technology locally. Basically, they are the ones responsible for wifi, mobile network, and such in Japan. Making gadgets aren't their main focus, but they do make good ass laptops like the LaVie. Also, my dad works there so there's that. Glad to see you back ^_^

Your very lucky out here (in France) with so little wrapping the PC would of got here in pieces.. yeah it a sweet little graphic card. And Perhaps you can get around screen brightness using XP power tools 12 or some other software but not sure. Nice video as usual :-)

NEC make some of the best quality electronic products in the world. I have a NEC CRT tv from 1984 and it still works perfectly.

As for the slider instead of a power button, I think that was quite a common design choice in the 90s. I used to have an early IBM ThinkPad that had a slider too. I remember it being awkwardly placed, incredibly stiff and for some reason covered in little ridges that tore your finger apart every time you switched the damn thing on. I'm fairly glad that never caught on.

I got a Gateway M275 convertible on eBay for $23, and that includes shipping. It was listed as "For Parts and Repair." With the right power supply and a Puppy Linux install it works perfectly. Came with HD and DVD drive.

My IBM Thinkpad 770X from 1999 is close to the specs like this NEC, but has a impressive 1280*1024 TFT, it cost me a good price and some time to fix it, but it was worth it. Is an amazing piece of history and nostalgia.

Dont use usb mouse and keyboard in such ould machines, the processing of the usb bus (that isnt dedicated to input), will likelly rise the cpu usage badly! At least that's what i saw some people commenting and was confirmed in my 1.2ghz amd duron! My amd duron hardly runs windows xp sp2/3 well, and if i move the mouse too fast it actually maxes out the cpu, but getting a ps/2 mouse would just solve the issue, making the cpu usage dont pass 5% when i move and drag the mouse around as fast as i can.

The oldest laptop that I have which is a Toshiba Satelite 330 CDS is about a year older than this from 1998. Has 266 MHz Pentium CPU with 96 mb ram and on it, still have Windows 98 second edition. Everything still works on it even after 21 years.

I've got a much older 233MHz PII-based laptop that I use for Win98 "gaming"... in quotes because while it does have a graphics processor, it doesn't quite do 3D. I'd snatch this NEC up in a heartbeat.

I keep a desktop like that alive for a Walkman, old files and my first XP, but it's in museum mode. It's assembled from give-away item runs I did with 2 others long ago. Now people use Facebook and I got a nice 4:3 Dell LCD monitor for free in December.

You know, Old laptops in my opinion are better. I use an old laptop for my school work and people tell me "ew, that thing's a dinosaur." Well, if it's old, nobody will want to steal it from me vs. someone who has a $1,000+ macbook.

Even for $13, almost every aspect of it is kind of an eyesore. I thought it could at least be a cool as a retro game machine (like late 90's PC games), but I wouldn't want to play any games on that rotten keyboard and dim screen.

Amazing you can get this for such little cost. I collect iPhones and the average price I pay for the old one is less than £10. Just think, in 10 years, the brand new shiny flagships will be floating around for just dollars. It’s mental to me. :p

Im the same way about that startup. My parents back in the day had a Windows XP pc, but my mom hates that sound because we had so much shit on the pc, and our pc was so slow, that my mom thought it was just an unreliable system. She says that noise reminds her of "difficult times"

That's actually a really good video card for the time for the mobile market. It would've been considered a "gaming" laptop. Try playing games from 1999 and earlier and you'll probably get better results. Not great, but better. I had a Sager laptop with very similar specs, I think it had a PII 400 and the same 8mb ATI LT videos card. I actually ended up upgrading the CPU AND video card because they weren't soldered on. The CPU was the MMC type chip, or something like that, so it could take a PIII, which I put in a PIII 800 that always ran at 600 and used it like that for years. The video card I put in was a 32mb TNT 2. It actually worked but would overheat and shut down, so it didn't work long term. I ended up putting the LT Pro back in. If you still have this computer you should check and see if any of the parts are removable/upgradable. It would make for a cool video! I wish I still had the Sager, it was the coolest laptop I ever had. It was forest green pearlescent that would fade to purple in the light. I bought it like that and I think someone had it custom plastidipped, but it was a professional job. Even the mouse buttons were bright red and the paint never wore off in the time I had it. That was a crazy laptop now that I think about it.
