This is a pretty awesome game, definitely a worthy competitor against Starfox 64. Some cool level design, good enemies (not quite the variety in Starfox 64, but still good), and some adequate character moments. A few things I would note that could have been better: Character choice for who is a wingman doesn't really seem to matter all that much, it's a nice touch, but not really mechanically tangible to where a player feels they have to choose to get specific advantages, it could have worked with just a little tweaking. That oxygen limitation on the downed fighter near the end was pointless, a ship like the one the Vanark crew have should have space suits or re-breathers of some kind for the scenarios where their own oxygen systems were down or destroyed, so it was pointless drama that barely added anything. Starfox 64 had more levels and just a little more colorful variety, though granted this game does do quite well with the levels it has to try and change the pace up, and it's very good work. The badguy's are kind of interesting as a premise, but they aren't too interesting in their interactions with the heroes, no real back and forth that's fun to listen to, and their "punishment" for the Vanark crew destroying their defensive positions is to... destroy the holy land that they chose to create for their own new race? Maybe their new race could survive an "ice star" as they put it, but it seems like just a bit overkill if they intended to use the planet at all. This looks like a very solid game overall that I would like in my library, but it still doesn't really refine it's elements quite as nicely as it could have.

To be honest, the flying part of the game looks kinda rad. With a higher resolution that game could easily be sold as HD Version. StarFox 64 is slow in comparison. And I loved that game. Great gameplay MadMatty.

A very underrated gem on the PS1, but there are a few things that bother me: 1) Text that goes by WAY too fast during the cutscenes (seriously, no one can read THAT quickly, the text does NOT need to be as fast as it is) 2) That fucking mini game where you have to save Randal is so bullshit for several reasons. A time limit of 3 minutes doesn't sound like much, but controlling the chip is so clumsy, and so easy to fuck up, and the fact that you can only do it once is the real kick in the balls. Yes, I know, it's a life or death situation for Randal, but I would have at least liked to have a few chances to start over in case I DO screw up. That would have made it easier, but honestly, it has no right to be as frustrating as it is. In fact, I'd argue it's so bad, that when playing on an emulator, you'd have to use save states just to get it right the first time. 3) Definitely a minor thing, but was there really no room to put in voice acting of any kind? I wouldn't be surprised it there was no space left on the disc, I just think it would've helped since I've noticed the cutscenes are dead silent if there's no music in the background. And considering Star Fox 64 was able to have voice acting, AND the fact that it was on a cartridge which I imagine has less space than a PS1 disc, that's saying quite a bit. I know, not every single PS1 game could do that, but still. There are a few other things that bother me, but the two that I already listed REALLY frustrate me.

I feel like this game's story has a great setup, but never delivers on its potential. The setting itself is amazing, but is hardly used for anything more than an excuse to fight monsters, the characters never really develop any interesting relationships (the MC walking in on the new merc recruit as she is coming out of the shower would, in most stories, lead to some sort of romance or sexual tension, here nothing at all comes of it), the villains are kind of one dimensional in practice, and the whole tale just sort of loses steam towards the end, even in spite of the stakes being raised. A pity, there was real potential here, but well, "strong in the windup, weak in the actual pitch".
