Detecting psychic scams & debunking mediums is easier when you know how psychic methods like cold reading work. Don't be fooled by psychic misdirection. Cold reading tricks are used by psychics to convince an audience that they know things that they don't - using high probability guesses, generalized statements, and linguistic techniques. Stay skeptical, dare to be curious, but don't fall for this bullshit, and don't drink the koolaid.

If you believe that we're living in a sea of disembodied souls that somehow need some kind of magic salvation to move on to "somewhere", then psychics start to sound plausible, too. In my early college years I was in a class where a student conversing with the professor expressed his amazement with the apparent abilities of a popular television psychic at the time. The professor briefly dismissed the simple techniques that psychics use and then, as a demonstration, performed the most amazing cold reading I had ever seen. When he was through he explained step-by-step how it was done. I've been very skeptical of "psychics" ever since.

@@jesuspectre9883 Why does Thomas John need to ask a bunch of questions from the subject? Why does he need to go "I'm getting a feminine feel from this person, was this a woman who passed? I'm getting the number two, does that number connect to this person? Maybe the number of children? I'm getting this sense that this person didn't get to live a full life - I'm getting the sense that her death was a confusing experience - I'm getting the sense blah blah blah blah"? Isn't he in direct communication with this person? Why can't he say "It's a woman, she says she was born in 1978 in Saint John's Newfoundland. She died in a car accident in 2015 on her way to the grocery store. She's telling me you met in a college English class where you sat across from each other. She's telling me you helped her through a difficult breakup that happened around the time you met and she's still thankful for it. She's reminding me of how you used to always forget your wallet at the counter after you paid for something and she'd have to remind you pick it back up before you walked away. She's telling me about the time you won a hundred dollars in a scratch-and-win after she told you it was a waste of money and you rubbed it in her face."? This just looks like a person pumping someone for information rather than getting it from another source through magic.

True psychic nature is not being at know at all, nor is reliant upon questions. Much of it relies on dreams and visions. They don't come on command nor can they paint a whole picture. Usually, if any one is of a true psychic nature, they refuse to do the task for money and often call it a curse rather than a blessing because it can be haunting to their daily existence due to the unpredictability of how a vision may appear or how often dream might reveal information. That's been my experience at least with one's I've met.

I always thought it was strange that her recently deceased parents hadn't come through, but obviously this was because the 'psychics' were just throwing out 'James, Jim, or Jimmy' and hoping for a hit!

Honestly, cold reading is a form of active listening. Trying to observe a person's behavior, speech, feeling and thoughts, you try to guess what you can deduce from this. Then you tell your claims to the person, and he can verify it, yes or no. Active listening is a form of empathy and is used in professional psychology. Cold reading, in principle, is pretty similar, yet whenever you look up for "cold reading", you get the same content as James Randi's Flim-Flam book. While when you look up for active listening, you get professional psychology insights.

I worked as a tarot reader once. I had too much integrity to continue, though, because even though I told people this is just a trick they BELIEVED me so hard! One lady came back, bringing her daughter with her so I could "tell the truth of the spirits" to the girl. I flat-out said "this is just cards here, I'm not listening to spirits or anything", but their desire to believe in the beyond was unshakeable. I was never trained in cold-reading techniques, but it really isn't hard to just spitball some generalities suggested by the pictures on the cards and the client's own signals (age, clothing, any info they give you) to say things that sound appropriate. Then the client fills in so many details themselves! They want to believe the message is for them specifically, and they easily forget anything I said that didn't fit and hone right in on anything they can crowbar into their own worldview. I only hope I didn't do any harm in my short "psychic" career. I tried to give good basic advice. But holy hell, people! Learn some scepticism! Edit: I want to say I did this tarot thing many different times for different groups, individuals, at my church, for friends in private, online, etc. EVERY SINGLE TIME I had people looking at me with these desperately needy eyes seeking "wisdom from God" or whatever, and way over-believing in anything I said. I had to stop doing tarot at all because people would practically argue with me that of COURSE I had spiritual guidance because no way would I just be lying to them, because "no way I could know all that stuff". I couldn't make them understand I wasn't lying, I was just saying intuitive stuff, and they gave undue credence to it just because I had a deck of mysterious cards also. It's a shame, because I do think tarot has some value. But not "predicting the future" value. Just the value that comes from learning to ask the right type of questions in your own life. If it leads you to consider angles in a new way, that's fine. If you think printed cards have some psychic control over your destiny, you're way too gullible and naive.

Something I'm surprised most psychics haven't thought to claim is that spirits can't communicate through language. They could claim that language gets muddled and the spirits can only communicate through images from memory or emotional experiences. (Maybe they could infer that language is taught and simply separates living entities, wherein non-living entities share their minds and therefore have no use of language and they tend to forget it.) People already know jack and shit about what "happens" to the human spirit after it dies. If these people were more creative, they could utilize that lack of knowledge. It would give them a lot more opportunities for vague predictions based on imagery without having to guess names specifically. They could describe feelings and vague experiences rather than specifics, which a lot more people are likely to pick up on and make the connection for them. I remember watching one psychic in particular describe the experiences of a child drowning, acting out the experience to the audience and describing her feelings on it as if she were the child, so clearly some of these people don't have the moral qualms to stop them from getting into the actually traumatic and offensive stuff. I don't see why taking that extra step isn't something I've seen them try to do. Though, I guess nowadays so many of them are already so far into their con, it would look strange if they changed up the rules now.

I once saw a psychic on a talk show who went fishing something like this: "You have an older person in your family.......and they had some kind of health problems..." Wow! Like, what are the chances of having old people in your family, or of old people having health issues? But people fall for it.....

My step sister was taken in by one of these psychics. So I got my sister to bring me along as a friend who would also like to contact someone. While there, I basically just agree with the psychic on all of their guesses. So to the J or G question, I answered yes. On the name guess of James or John, I said yes to John. And so it went. I let the psychic build this completely fictional dead family member. Afterwards my step sister could see how it was all just guesses based on people's responses. After I lost my faith, but before becoming an atheist, I tried a lot of things, including being a high ranking member of a cult. While that wasn't a high point for me morally, it did give me some skills in manipulating people. And for a short time on a one to one setting I can control my non verbal communications. Using this, I was able to guide the psychic away from anything remotely correct and allow them to be convinced of the most insane elements.

@mabrown666
@mabrown666 6 жыл бұрын
I have now. And yes, there was a degree of similarity. If I’m going to confess honestly, finding out that religion was made up, made me angry at religion and at those who taught it. I saw it as trickery used to line their own pockets. Now I understand that most are just people doing what they believe is right. But back then I wanted my share of the loot. My hook was never to name the deity, it was always the spirit of God or just the spirit. This kept it open to anyone and I didn’t need to conform to anything. I would lead them in trance, that was actually a Buddhist meditation technique, and then the spirit would enter the chosen one. The second aspect was that the spirit could enter anyone, but just happened to choose me. Allowing me to remain humble and pure, while keeping hope alive that one day they could be chosen. Once chosen I would perform a miracle. In truth, just a simple sleight of hand and autosuggestion. Although every once in a while, I would do the big one. I would drink poison and allow the spirit to cleanse me. Two cups and in my preparations, I would switch cups, then "drink" from the empty cup. During the purification spasms (helped with an alka seltzer tablet) I would pour away the actual content. After my miracle, I would dispense wisdom (always in my favour) and then the spirit would leave. It was a small cult, maxing out at just over 30 people and lasted for a couple of years. Then very suddenly I had an attack of morality and I was disgusted with myself. I would like to say I came clean there and then, but I didn’t. I made up some bull about being called to spread the teachings and left the area. I have run into a few of them in the intervening decades, and I have come clean to them about it all. The oddest part is that a couple don’t believe me and still think I have some kind of god given power. I think this is why I have such high hatred of charlatans, due to my own guilt over my younger self.

For the most part it was validation of my “powers”. If I could tell someone in their twenties that they once had a strong male role model who was no longer present, that was somehow connected to a letter that sounded like G or J, then they would take that as proof of my special knowledge. But of course, they wouldn’t remember it like that. To them it would be that I knew that their uncle Jack had moved to the west country a few years ago and now wasn’t around as much. Or that their dad had passed away and was with Jesus or God. They would fill in the details for me, and then be amazed that I knew all the details.

Even without knowing the specific techniques they are using, shouldn't people get suspicious that the so called psychics get so many guesses wrong? Hey Thomas, you might want to do a video about hypnotism. Hypnotism seems to me to stem from the same tree as believing in psychics. It's possible that hypnotism doesn't exist at all in the way that it is popularly portrayed. Hypnotism may very well be nothing more than people willingness to follow the influence of another person acting authoritatively.

I don't know if it's because I've always been a data geek (and now do it professionally) or if this is a common thing for a lot of people, but I can't remember a time when cold reading didn't seem like totally transparent BS. I think the first time I heard someone say "I'm getting a J name" I was pretty much done with the whole mirage.
