The Real Swing Golf Method® of learning golf is based on two simple skills that are the foundation for hitting great golf shots.
This series of videos explains in greater detail the basics of the Real Swing Golf Method® that were briefly outlined in the Golf Channel Instructor Search Audition video.
In Part 7, Ron explains the principle that your body simply carries out whatever instruction it is receiving from your brain. This explains your experiences where you hit it great on the range when you are warming up (no body focused swing thoughts since you are just warming up), hit it great for a few holes and then, as soon as you hit the inevitable bad shot at some point in your round, your swing thoughts change from "just relax and hit the ball" (external swing cues focused on your objective) to... "Oh no, I forgot to make body part "A" do technical move "B"!!! That's why I topped it!" And then, as you hit more and more bad shots, your mental checklist of body part do's and don't's expands in number and your body attempts to carry out all of the instructions. Since these instructions are all internal, body focused, and distracting you from striking the ball to within 1/16th of an inch of the center of the clubface... about the distance between these two lower case L's: l l (Not much room for tolerance, eh?) ...you don't hit the ball anywhere near the sweet spot. Then on the 18th hole, as you are about to hit your last shot before "giving up golf for good this time," you are going though your 14 point swing mechanics checklist when you snap and think... "Arrrgh, whatever! JUST HIT THE @$#%!&* BALL!!!!!!!!" Of course, you hit the "comeback for more" shot where you hit it pure and straight and golf sucks you back in again! This is why your best shots come when you get fed up and you default back to external, objective based swing cues which have been scientifically proven to produce greater performance (see Part 4).
Striking a golf ball is essentially a stationary ball, hand-eye coordination skill. Golfer's can improve their swing and striking ability very quickly with the following swing thoughts:
- "Relax" (especially in the hands to be able to swing the clubhead freely and to be able to feel the weight of the swinging clubhead and the path of its "heavy circle.")
- Swing with a "Rhythm," with the rhythm of the swing being Tick "Talk" - 'tick tock' so swing the clubhead swings fluidly like a clock pendulum but you want to accelerate the momentum of the forward swing of the pendulum so the clubhead "talks." In other words, the accelerating clubhead makes a loud "wwhhoooossshh" sound through the impact area - hence the rhythm is Tick - and then make your club "Talk."
- Strike the ball by feeling the clubhead's weight and the path of its "heavy circle" and "guiding" (not "controlling") the path of the clubhead's "heavy circle" so that, as it passes through the ball, the ball is struck as closely as possible to the center of the clubface.

There is an undeniable thread of logic that flows through your concepts; not so with the thousands of "Position Instructors". Having as little as one or two degrees of angle change or 3/8's to a 1/2 inch of vertical or lateral movement take a swing from good to bad... proves that positions taken at address are not the key, nor are positions passed through! Building the skill (club face to ball contact) is best gained by first proper intent and second by repetitive execution (with feedback). There is a fellow that posts on KZfaq showing his unique swing (which produces 300 plus yard drives) he attained his skill by bouncing golf balls off the face of various sledge hammers! It gave him strength and a very high level of hand to eye coordination. Thanks for your well presented information...

It makes sense. All these things he is talking about happened to me. I had a fantastic shot yesterday because I didn't think of any swing mechanics and just hit it. It went over 200 yards and on the dot. At the moment I'm trying to learn the A Swing of D. L. I'm going to give a shot tomorrow.

During winter months I play pretty well off mats. Come spring and back on turf I shank - a lot. I think my swing thought of "ball - turf" is getting in the way. Today I will practise and play with your message in mind and concentrate on simply swinging the clubhead. Enjoyed your videos, thanks.

Striking a golf ball is a stationary ball, hand-eye coordination skill. This requires you to focus on swinging the CLUBHEAD and guiding the CLUBHEAD'S path through the ball. Your usual body oriented swing thoughts - keep HEAD still, turn SHOULDERS, etc... - are actually CAUSING YOUR MISHIT SHOTS! Most golf instruction ignores the only thing that has any effect on the ball - the CLUBHEAD - and distracts you with confusing body-focused swing thoughts. Agree or disagree??? PLEASE COMMENT!!!

Ever noticed your ball striking is dramatically better on the range when the levels of tension are drastically less than on course during a competition round. I like this concept, and think of a number of my best rounds occurring when I felt I didn't need to think about what I was doing. Swing club, hit ball. :)
