Ptarmigan Tunnel Trail in Many Glacier, Glacier National Park Montana

11 ай бұрынThis 12 mile out and back starts at the same trail head as the Iceberg Lake Trail by the Swiftcurrent Motor Lodge in the Many Glacier area of Glacier National Park. The Ptarmigan tunnel trail and the Iceberg Lake trail share the first 2.8 miles of trail. At that point, Ptarmigan splits to the right and Iceberg continues straight. The grade is relatively steep after you branch off from the main trail but the trail is very well maintained. You reach Ptarmigan lake and can then see the wall of switchbacks up to the tunnel. Be sure to walk at least 1/4 on the other side of the tunnel to get views of Old Sun Glacier as shown in the video. Enjoy the trails!

I did this hike in 1971 on my first day as a civilian after finishing my Air Force service at Great Falls. I did the northern circle trail in 5 days. IIRC I only saw three people on the trail that day to Elizabeth Lake. The next day I hiked all the way to the Goat Haunt trail without seeing a single person. Great memories! Thanks.

I got to hike through Ptarmigan Tunnel at the beginning of a week long backpacking trip in 2013. Your video gave me happy memories of that hike. Such incredible views from either side!

I was here in September. I got altitude sickness here! haha I made it to Ptarmigan Tunnel! Took about 5 hours to get to the top and back down!

It is unique in that the tunnel makes it possible to have views of both sides of the mountain, with Ptarmigan Lake on one side and Elizabeth Lake on the other. Another beautiful section of Many Glacier indeed. Thank you!

You folks do a nice job of filming. Do you do any hikes where you don't film? How many grizzly sightings this season?

Most of our hikes we don’t bring the camera. Maybe 1/2 dozen grizz sightings or so this year. We do what we can to avoid them.

Have had the pleasure of seeing several moose this year rather than bears, which we consider a bonus 👍 Many of our hikes are not recorded, but we do enjoy the ability to look back on our journeys through these awesome mountains. Thanks so much, enjoy the wilderness ⛰

Parts of the trails looked really steep. Beautiful view when you first walked out of Ptarmigan Tunnel (the view with Elizabeth Lake and Belly River). The tunnel would have made me a little nervous. Also loved the video of the moose at Fishercap Lake. Do you know what he was pulling up out of the water to eat? Thank you again for the wonderful video …. Really enjoyed.
