I always used to use the side of my hand (made into a fist of course) because thats how I was taught but as soon as I switched to my knuckles I noticed immediate improvement in speed. You're the only one I've seen recommend doing that and I would second the motion. For whatever its worth I would say don't worry about speed right away, learn how to hit it correctly and stay relaxed and speed will come. Have a great day!

cary williams I have watched this video probably over 200 times until I got it down finally! You are seriously like one of four woman that are on you tube for speedbag training videos. I love love this video! I really want to learn how to do the crossing boxing or crossing technique, I’m not sure the name of it but it’s what you are doing towards the end of this video! If possible maybe you could make a you tube video strictly on that!? Thank you though this video is extremely helpful!!

Hi there, I am not a boxer, however, I love my speed bag. I have been practicing on the one I'm my local fitness center for about three weeks , until today when I purchased my own with a quality bag and swivel. I may never get in a ring at my age but my bag relieves stress and leaves me with a really good feeling about life. Thanks for sharing the Video.

@@carywilliamsboxing What's the best moment to hit the speed bag? Right after it bounces back from the platform or when it's perpendicular?
@carywilliamsboxing

Just saw this. You want to have your hands high and ready to hit the bag. As soon as it is bouncing back you are going to hit it, coming down on it in a circular motion.

It’s amazing how hitting it with the knuckle increases my performance. Thanks. Question: I’m still a bit perplex how to do the cross. At the 4min mark, you described it still hitting it with the knuckles. But then when you demonstrate to slowly it still looks like the left hand is hitting with the side of your fist. I tried to hit with the knuckles in that position but can’t get it to work. Can you please help elaborate or point me to another video? Thanks!
@carywilliamsboxing
@carywilliamsboxing 5 жыл бұрын
So glad it helped your performance! Yes, I am still hitting with the knuckles in a downward motion. Once your wrists and shoulders loosen up, you will be able to have more fluidity throughout the arms and wrist that will enable you to get the hand tuned to the side with knuckles pointed outward.

When I try to use the speed bag, the holder will still shake even though everything is screwed tight. I know I'm still a beginner but the shaking of the stand isn't helping when trying to get better at the speed bag. I have a level 3 speed bag from Everlast that I use on it. Any tips? Hey Cary, awesome video. Quick question, is that a rubber bladder in your speed bag? I have to hit mine what seems to be a lot harder, and I remember on one of your videos something was said about a rubber bladder. I love your boxing videos. I am happy I stumbled onto your channel a few weeks back.

Thanks Carson Smith When I get a speed bag I take out the rubber bladder and replace with a plastic bladder. It does make the bag faster:) The rubber bladder does require you to hit it harder to make it move. I will do a tutorial on how to replace the bladder very soon!

I was taught never to hit with a cranked wrist or to use my knuckles, i guess whatever works !
@carywilliamsboxing
@carywilliamsboxing 4 жыл бұрын
Yes, the general way coaches teach the speed bag is with a stiff wrist and on the side of the hand. I use the speed bag as a tool for boxing not just something you do. To turn the fist over quickly on the bag helps to create speed when you are throwing your punches, especially if you use one hand 2-3 times in a row. For instance, jab, uppercut, hook. Your fist needs to be in 3 different positions to throw that. A lot of coaches are not open to new ways of training. All good. You can hit it however you like.

Quick question...just set up my speed bag and obviously I am trying to start by utilizing the correct technique. Watched at least 20 different videos but they seem to differ on how you should be hitting the bag. Most seemingly have the heel of the hand as a contact point, because I guess you have better control of the bag, while others utilize the knuckles. I know you mentioned the knuckles but is it absolutely incorrect to use the heel of the hand? I haven't found anything consistent and I would like to start off by learning the correct way, thanks in advance!
@carywilliamsboxing

I had mentioned in a previous comment why I use the knuckles. You can hit the bag with whatever part of the hand you want, but I like to get the most out of my training and use every tool to the fullest.:)

I'm a week in after watching this video one week today to be exact and while I've made allot of progress i can't help but feel like I'm doing it wrong. I've never hit a speed bag until last week the first two days was extremely frustrating I probably only hit the bag 7-10 minutes each day. On day 3 I made some real progress and probably hit the bag 30 minutes of course i stopped several times but i hung in there for a thirty minute practice session. Fast forward to today my figure 8 is ok my double hit the switch is ok my cross is terrible lol. my speed can't seem to get above the basic 1-2 count swing and this frustrates me. why can't i catch a faster rhythm? I saw another video that says it takes about 30 days to get a faster rhythm so I have twenty-one more days before I'm at least Hollywood material. hopefully one day I'll get as fast as you.

Hi, I am also about 30 days into hitting the speed bag. I like Curry's video but I'm sticking with the technique learned from my first video. I only hit for about 5-7 mins a day and I am (WAY) better than I was 30 days ago. That said, I'm thinking that 30mins a day may be too long for me. Oh btw, I purchased my own speed bag set-up today. Laighing out loud, thanks.

good video tutorial, just a word of caution - dont curl your wrist when hitting the speed bag. She is probably doing it because the motion is slowed down for demonstration. But ideally, your Knuckles, wrist, and forearm should be as straight as possible. If you let your wrist curl, you will develop a bad habit that will come out when your hitting the heavy bag, and you will hurt yourself, badly.
@carywilliamsboxing
@carywilliamsboxing 6 жыл бұрын
Hi There! The reason for loose wrists is so that you can change the direction of your punches in a combination. It is hard to explain in a message, but the relation in the wrist allows you to snap your shots and turn your hands over or under quickly in a combination. You do not keep the wrist curled when hitting the speed bag, it is fluid. How long have you been boxing?

As I always say, everyone has their own way of doing things. Rocky is a movie and a lot of what is in a boxing movie is incorrect. A lot of pros and amateurs hit it with the side of the hand but they were never taught to use the bag as a tool. It can be used to increase the speed of you turning your hand over or under for a punch. Progress Ron, progress.

@@carywilliamsboxing lol they don't know anything, you have very good rhythm you're right, you can use your knuckles as well, I was taught to use the side of the hand but there is coaches who teach you to use the knuckles as well, I myself use both ways, some rounds knuckles some side of the hand, anyways I came across your video because I noticed your platform is home set up assuming by the pictures etc, how did you mount it, I mounted on on my room but it was to noisy so I had to weigh it down a lot to really go hard at it and after about 1 week of going hard it come off the wall, how are yours set up ? Do you have any ideas how I could set it up not in the wall at all maybe some sort of free standing platform ? I was thinking grabbing the ever last heavy bag and speedbag platform and replace the bad one they provide with mine do you think that would work ?
@carywilliamsboxing
@carywilliamsboxing 4 жыл бұрын
If you only have a wall to hand the platform on, i would suggest getting the stand up frame. You have to put some sort of weight on the platform so that it is solid. A small sand bag. My platforms are custom built with steel frame and platform with 1 inch wood with sheet metal covering.

No offence Cary but I don't think the speed bag is awfully useful for boxing training, imho the technique many boxers use is nothing like what occurs in the ring - many boxers seem to use it to show off and stoke their ego in front of others in the gym. I do enjoy watching proper speedbaggers who can do all sorts of tricks using double hits, elbows etc., which is far more interesting to watch and much harder to do than the usual boxer's style.
@carywilliamsboxing
@carywilliamsboxing 6 жыл бұрын
If you hit it the way I am showing here, it is useful for the sport. Thing is, most people have a really hard time relaxing their arms and shoulders while boxing. The speed bag can help with that if used the right way. Practicing relaxing your arms/shoulders while hitting the speed bag and turning your hands over in different directions quickly helps with actually throwing punches. Aside from all of that, I put up videos to help folks who are just starting out and who want to learn how to hit a speed bag. No need for peacocking here:)
@joeygonzo
@joeygonzo 6 жыл бұрын
Boxers do their speed bag work second to the last in their training sessions. IF it's not a sparring day, they hit the coaches mitts. Then they head to the punching bag, then double end bag then the speed bag to wind down. The higher the speed bag is, the more the shoulder work it is. Less inflation means it needs more striking force. The speed bag can also be used as a punching target. So, they do have some use for technique and timing workout. After the speed bag work, boxers hit the jump ropes and call it a day.

By your logic, boxers are wasting their time skipping rope too. Nothing like that happens in the ring. Or, why-in-the-world would a boxer do pushups...or situps.... or roadwork?! And how, exactly, do "all sorts of tricks" make for a "proper speedbagger"? No offenSe, Skrote, but you are under a severe misapprehension.
