THANK YOU very much for uploading these two episodes. Had never heard of this mid-50s CBS series til I saw it listed on your channel. Though definitely low budget, I enjoyed it. Always liked the star, Reed Hadley (who had a very active career also narrating documentaries). One wonders if public defenders have investigators of their own just like most district attorney offices do. In these episodes, he had to do his own investigating. In a large city, the public defender's offices are probably overwhelmed. The DA's have the advantage of having the resources of the police available. Public defenders REALLY earn their pay, that's for sure!

Indubitably ! Not only bodacious "blasts from the past", but I too love the vintage commercials. And a real kick to see previews of next week's episode too !

That "snap open" pack did look rather nifty. This brand was still around in the 70s when I smoked. Thank goodness I quit the habit in 1984.

Tobacco companies were some of the biggest sponsors of TV programs til their ads were outlawed in 1971.

In the "Hot Rodders" episode, (second one) the guilty party who confessed to the vehicular murder would also shortly after, become host of a game show which was involved in the controversial scandal ($64,000 Question). The name: Hal March.

Indeed! I also remember him guest starring on the highly popular "I Love Lucy" series!

The series was seen on Thursdays at 10pm(et). Later, during the second season, Philip Morris shifted to co-sponsor status, with Revlon cosmetics sustaining the alternate weeks.

This was a "sequel" to "RACKET SQUAD"- produced by the same people, for the same sponsor. Unfortunately, Philip Morris sales were sliding at the time (not even their sponsorship of "I LOVE LUCY" on Monday nights could stem the slump)- and because of that, the series ended after the 1954-'55 season.

Marlboro "saved" Phillip Morris, when it was re-positioned as a man's cigarette in 1954.

Actually, the "new" Marlboro was introduced in mid-1955. This was one of the first magazine ads promoting it: blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgXv_OlSisr5TTNPrhgbJyNh1_hEbriJC0Fjwt4k5uo0S8I4Hocgd5kvuIU45QpEWeN8nFKiQCYrZrJP5KsQOlwds0KzOuwhJwMOw5z_MAKIu9mXCpXpQQXSbHd04inZoLWZWmKQ_39yxQ/s1600/FirstVersions_Marlboro-advertising_1955.png

Incidentally, the theme was Philip Morris' "signature" on radio and TV for over 20 years- Ferde Grofe's "On the Trail" {from "Grand Canyon Suite"- this was because Grofe's orchestra had headlined PM's 1933 radio show, and "On the Trail" continued to introduce all of their programs}. In syndication, a different theme was used.

Richard Deacon started out appearing in dramatic roles. Eventually, he shifted to comedy parts- not only on "LEAVE IT TO BEAVER", he also appeared regularly on Betty White's "DATE WITH THE ANGELS" (1957-'58), and frequently on "THE JACK BENNY PROGRAM" before he became a part of "THE DICK VAN DYKE SHOW".

Yes! Veteran character actor Richard Deacon, who was best known for his TV comedic roles. He later was known for being a gourmet chef & in the 70s published a couple of cookbooks.

Note the hot rod episode stated the umpire driver was found guilty of a manslaughter charge - a misdemeanor resulting in five years probation. I am not familiar enough with the law in that or any other jurisdiction nor whether or not the severity of the crime in 1954 - a misdemeanor - is still the same in 2023. Certainly food for though and perhaps further research.
