I ain't mad at that.... anymore than someone robbing a bank. People who want to get ahead and win in a game of gunplay & glory....I completely understand approve and even commend their balls commitment and ambitions.... The problem is, when you're playing these high stakes blood games, most always people end up getting hurt or killed who never agreed or even knew they were putting themselves on the line. It's not what JD or the Gov specifically did that I'm condemning or judging. It's the collateral damage, who got hurt and how most of them never even knew they bought in let alone wanted to put their lives at risk. However..... the simple fact is, had JD peacefully and without casualties committed these crimes, he never would've lasted. As it was, he and his crew directly initiated gunplay during their crimes. As far as after escaping the scene, any ambushes or assaults from hve Gov were still indirectly spawned from crimes, casualties and actions of JD&co.

Problem was, at that time, the banks were looked on as evil as the bank robbers. People saw Banks to be the real criminals. In fact evidence tends to indicate that a lot of the bank robberies that John Dillinger committed were pre-arranged. The bank would get robbed for $25,000, and then the bank would report it as $52,000. I have studied Dillinger upside, downside, sideways. Always was fascinated with him. How he was able to hide under the nose of the law. I don't know how they did pre-arranged robberies, and I have to look into that. But apparently evidence indicates that a lot of them were indeed pre-arranged events

Unfortunately, while it's an enjoyable film, it's not a great one. The camerawork lets it down in a few spots (Mann was an occasional operator) and the screenplay is pretty disjointed. I thought Marion Cottilliard was a poor choice for the part of Billy Frechette and I hated Christian Bale. That said, for the most part, it's inoffensive and there are some good performances in it. I can't decide if it's a 6 or 7 out of 10.

Interesting! Because Billy - a woman - was the only person who actually stood by his side until the end and didn't sell him out no matter what they held against her head. About the Romanian girl, when the feds blackmail you to hand in a criminal or find yourself back on a ship to Romania (not the place to be in the 1930s), any person or gender would've broken! (Not so) Fun fact: They didn't keep their promise and deported her anyway! Most importantly, Dillinger knew he was done at that point (least of all after literally checking the files in the department). His entire crew was dead and the feds obviously could only get to him with the help of the Romanian "flat mate", whom he also knew was in a delicate position - The man wasn't an idiot! What he wanted was to die on his own terms, thus the final movie night with a great gangster movie.

Actually during Dillinger's shooting the feds accidently shot and wounded to women bystanders. They also killed several civilians by 'mistake' during another incident. There are no records of Dillinger ever harming any of his hostages. A witness even claimed he threatened to shoot Baby Face Nelson for threatening to harm a hostage.

He put innocent people in front of him and his cohorts as human shields consistently. So he was either a bad guy or a coward. Could'nt have been a good guy and courageous to do something like that. He knew damn good and well gunplay was possible everyday he left his bedroom, let alone when robbing banks. It'd be more respectable to bang it out with police who signed up knowing the risk, than hide behind some woman who was picking up money for groceries and the water bill. As far as no record of hurt civilians, let's assume that's true. What about the prison guards or police officers he shot while they're working to provide for a family during a depression to satisfy his own greed.

Yes, quite a flawed film. Epic attention to detail in some spots and very sloppy in others. Patchy acting. Some great performances (Stephen Lang) and some rubbish ones (Christian Bale). Very disjointed screenplay and some odd camerawork. Enjoyable though.
