Public Enemy - Harder Than You Think
Album: How You Sell Soul To A Soulless People Who Sold Their Soul
Lyrics:
[Flavor Flav - Intro]
Yo Chuck, bust a move man
I was on my way up here to the studio, ya know what I'm sayin'?
And this brother stop me and axe me
"Yo, wassup with that brother Chuckie D? He swear he nice"
I said "Yo the brother don't swear he's nice, he KNOWS he's nice"
Ya know what I'm sayin'?
So Chuck, I got a feelin you turnin him into a Public Enemy, man
Now remember that line you was kicking to me
On the way out to LA Lounge in Queens
While we was in the car on our way to the Shop
Well yo, right now kick the bass for them brothers
And let 'em know, WHAT, GOES, ON!
[Chuck D. - overlaps last line syncing with Flav]
WHAT, GOES, ON!
Rolling Stones of the rap game, not braggin'
Lips bigger than Jagger, not saggin'
Spell it backwards, I'mma leave it at that..
That ain't got nuttin to do with rap
Check the facts, expose those cats
Who pose as heroes and take advantage of blacks
Your government's gangster, so cut the crap
A war goin on so where y'all at?
"Fight the Power" comes great responsibility
'F the Police' but who's stopping YOU from killlin me?
Disaster, fiascos over a loop by P.E
If it's an I instead of we believin TV
Spittin riches, bitches, and this new thing about snitches
Watch them asses move as the masses switches
System dissed them but barely missed her
My soul intention to save my brothers and sisters!
[Hook 4X]
Hard... (Get up!)
JUST, LIKE, DAT
[Flavor Flav - interlude]
Yeah, that's right Chuck, man
That's what you gotta do
You got to tell 'em JUST, LIKE, DAT, ya know what I'm sayin?
Cause yo, lemme tell you a lil something man
These brothers runnin around, hard-headed!
They get a lil jealous, you know what I'm sayin?
Just like that! You know, they try to bring you down wit 'em
But yo, Chuck, you got to tell 'em JUST, LIKE, DAT!
[Chuck D. - Verse Two]
Screamin gangsta twenty years later
Of course endorsed while consciousness faded
New generation believin them fables
"Gangster Boogie" on two turntables
Show no love so it's easy to hate it
Desecrated while the coroner waited
Any given Sunday, so where y'all rate it?
Wit slavery, lynchin, and them drugs infiltrated
I'm like that doll Chucky, baby
Keep comin back to live, love life like I'm crazy
Keep it movin +Rising to the Top+
+Doug Fresh+ clean livin you don't stop
Revolution means change, don't look at me strange
So I can't repeat what other rappers be sayin
You don't stand for something, you fall for anything
Harder than you think, it's a beautiful thing
[Hook]
[Flavor Flav - interlude again]
Yeah, that's right Chuck, man
That's what you gotta do
You got to tell 'em JUST, LIKE, DAT, ya know what I'm sayin?
Cause yo, lemme tell you a lil something man
These brothers runnin around, hard-headed!
They get a lil jealous, you know what I'm sayin?
Just like that! You know, they try to bring you down wit 'em
But yo, Chuck, you got to tell 'em JUST, LIKE, DAT!
[Chuck D. - Verse Three]
So it's time to leave you a preview
So you too can review what we do
20 years in this business, How You Sell Soul?
Gee whiz, people bear witness
Thank you for lettin us be ourselves
So don't mind me if I repeat myself
These simple lines be good for your health
To keep them crime rhymes on the shelf
Live love life like you just don't care
Five thousand leaders never scared
"Bring the Noise," it's 'the moment they feared'
Get up! Still a beautiful idea
[Hook]
[Chuck D. - overlaps Hook]
Get up! - Throw yo hands in the air
Get up and show no fear!
Get up if y'all really care!
P.E. 20 years, now get up!!
[Flavor Flav - Outro]
Yeah, that's right, we Public Enemy #1 in New York
Public Enemy #1 in Philly, Public Enemy #1 in D.C
Public Enemy #1 in Cleveland, Ohio (we're harder than you think)
Also we're Public Enemy #1 in St. Louis
(It's a beautiful thing) Public Enemy #1 in New Jersey
And bust it, we also Public Enemy #1 in Cincinnatti, (we're harder than you think)
And Atlanta, even Public Enemy #1 in Chicago, Public Enemy #1 in Detroit
(It's a beautiful thing) Public Enemy #1 in Oakland
(We're harder than you think) Public Enemy #1 in Baltimore
Public Enemy #1 in Miami, Public Enemy #1 in Indiana
Also Public Enemy #1 in L.A. (it's a beautiful thing... indeed)
Also Public Enemy #1 in Alabama, y'all (we're harder, than you think!)
Public Enemy #1 in Tennesee, Public Enemy #1 in Mississippi
The {?} of all the Public Enemies...
[Flavor's outro finally fades as "JUST, LIKE, DAT"
Is briefly heard thorught the song while the song fades]

56 y.o. white male in self-isolation who 'didn't like rap' when I was younger just 'discovered' Public Enemy. Oh my god this is amazing. Chuck D has the best voice on the planet. I've gone down the old-school rap/hip-hop rabbit hole on You Tube and I don't expect to surface, and I'm not sure I want to. This music is gold. Stay safe everyone :)

I hope I’m not preaching to the converted... Most of the rap/hip-hop being churned out these days is only fit for the trash. If you haven’t already, check out BIG L, BDP, Nas, Kendrick, De La Soul, Big E, Tribe Called Quest, 2Pac etc etc I could go on yet hope you enjoy. These artists in the main, produced tracks with meaning. You stay safe too bro. 🙏

Yeah -- I listened to FOABP and takes a nation of millions back in the early 90s and I liked it OK but it was always his voice that stuck with me...now in 2020 I listened to the rest and finally figured out that it is great fucking music with great musicians and braver words than you will find elsewhere. They've got it all, beautiful chord progressions, anger, musicianship, poetry. I'm sad it took me so long.

For information,I'm a Scottish Lass from Aberdeen,Scotland and have followed#Publicenemy since 80's...Chuck D et al have taught me so freaking much over the years and #Chuckds and PE writing is spot on..I know that Chuck likes to check out culture of everywhere they play and learn about the politics. They had and still have a hardcore set of fans in Aberdeen and everywhere in Scotland. He actually said at the Glasgow gig that he thought Scotland would be independent by now!!!!!.. Yep they have so many gifts and I am so very honoured to have found them when I did. They are true genuine highly talented and genius writers and musicians. THANK YOU PUBLIC ENEMY FOR LETTING YOUR FANS BE OURSELVES..with peace and love from Aberdeen!!✌❤💕

I feel like this is what rap was originally for and now it's just full of overhyped egotistical dickheads with too much money. Don't get me wrong though, I enjoy Drake from time to time.

in seventh grade, we watched a documentary called "let freedom sing", featuring black artists such as Chuck D and Aretha Franklin. shortly afterward, I started listening to P.E. ...in hindsight, pretty much the only time I can remember a music appreciation class spawning an actual appreciation for music.

It makes you feel strong because it's a well designed masterpiece that was made to make you feel strong. This absolutely glorious brass ascending melody, the simple, regal chords that just drop and stick around, the echo that makes it feel like Chuck D is talking to a huge, massive crowd. Everything serves this one purpose : to make you feel strong, to make you feel like you have back up. To make you feel like everyone is right there with you.

A great song. I love the beat, and when I read the lyrics I was really impressed with the message. The movie End of Watch also makes fantastic use of this song; I would highly recommend watching it if you haven't. I think a lyric that really sums up a lot of the tension between the cops and public in the movie is "F the police, but who's stopping you from killing me?" The cops had a good sense of justice, and the ending really got me :/ Good movie...
