Voyagers of the Jump is an original adventure using the 2022 2E Update to the Traveller RPG rules set by Mongoose Publishing.
First published in 1977, Traveller is a science fiction RPG in the vein of The Expanse or Battlestar Galactica. Most who played the original game back in the day remember the robust character creation system where if you push too far and get unlucky with the dice, you can die before you even start playing.

No one rescued Shackleton and the Endurance. He and a handful of men took a long boat though Antarctic waters hundreds of miles to New South Georgia. They then marched across the island to a whaling station and got help for the remaining crew back on the ice. They rescued themselves. Great pick Sydney!

Shackleton left at the outbreak of the Great War, when he turned up years later at Stromness Whaling Station, covered in rotting seal furs, before he was even inside he asked when the war had ended, the keeper replied, “The war is not over. Millions are being killed. Europe is mad. The world is mad.” That's always been one of my favourite quotes.

The voyage of the James Caird must count as one of the greatest small boat journeys ever undertaken. The longboat is now on permanent display at Shackleton's alma mater, Dulwich College.

PBS did a great mini-series on this. The ship got crushed in the ice and everyone lived on the ice for months. Had to eat some long-dead frozen animals to survive. This was way before satellite phones and GPS (1913 I think). Pretty insane for anyone to get on a ship headed for the uncharted Antarctic!

I just need to stop and express amazed wonder at Skid's level of improv. Someone makes a joke about "Space Pabst," and Skid pops in seconds later with "Pabst Blue Robot," which is better than anything I could have come up with if you gave me a pad, a paper, and ten minutes. And it's just a single passing reference in a sea of others. He is an astounding talent.

14:08 Sydney's self preservation kicks in. 18:47 Summary of last episode 20:57 What do *you* think is going on? 22:58 Aliens? In Traveller? No way! :P 24:54 Is the crew aging weird? (They never get the crew photo, by the way.) 25:44 The adventure begins 27:00 Look at me. Puffer is the captain now. 30:16 A save from Artemis. 30:45 A clue about Hempt. Or however it's spelt. 32:45 This happened 5 days ago? Like older than the 2 plus weeks old video from the civilian pleasure craft? 33:33 The age of the video would be slightly older than 2 weeks. The video can only be brought in on a jump, and then the Kate's Gambit spent a week in the jump. If compared, the video of the pleasure craft from the Ellison would be a few hours old, and video of the Ellison would be a fortnight old. 35:43 She feeds Katie some of the medicine she had last episode. 36:47 Much like how everyone else was crying last episode. The shoe doesn't feel so good on the other foot, Ellison crewmen? 38:40 Puffer looking out for number 1 39:44 RPG horror stories. When the players realize they're all not on the same page about the approach, or anything else. 40:40 He means the half-life of isotopes. 42:58 The minder is coming back. 45:16 Seth's handwriting is like a drunk child. 46:06 Four hours to break 70 year old encryption. 46:30 Sub lieutenant Valman comes back. 48:00 The probes plot. 50:12 The probes launched. Jump drives are next. 52:02 Engineering at deck 5 and 6. 55:30 Another way to say WTF happened. 57:50 The story is just really, really strange. 58:50 Artemis investigates. 1:02:04 Ain't nobody bought the fishy story. 1:04:44 Back to the story. (After Matthew quickly reads about String Theory.) 1:07:27 Wait, he was hitting on her? 1:08:14 Damian is really hitting on her. 1:09:43 Wait, what kind of bars would need use of those signels? 1:10:30 Wait, is this true? Is that why girls do that? 1:12:53 Throwing stuff at the wall. 1:14:29 Ok, where to now? 1:17:08 Our plan is a date. In a sense. 1:17:58 Canon: Katie Finn=Plain. 1:19:16 Wait, are we going there? 1:20:06 Are we going to hit on the (not) Captain now? 1:22:21 In the not-captain's room. 1:24:49 The not-captain is overly clean. 1:26:19 Entrapment gone wrong. 1:27:10 Abort! Abort! 1:27:40 For the love of Saint Peter, pull out! 1:29:26 She turned the encounter around, in a way. 1:30:46 The world of howdoyouspellthat. 1:33:20 Have I mentioned not to murder anyone? 1:35:22 Gigi was getting somewhere. It took a while to get there, but there she is. 1:38:33 What's everyone else doing? 1:39:41 Let's go to the date first. And the code is Brown. 1:40:45 The date. 1:42:46 This endearing but f*!king guy. 1:47:43 Puffer's turn at deck 8 and 9 1:49:48 We go right back to the Date 1:52:53 We go back to the cargo bay 1:56:03 We whiplash back to the date. 1:58:22 The 'Wait, what?' moment. (By the way, RIP Sydney's guns. I think she realizes she is flexing her biceps and shoulders at the camera and is dressing up to prevent that.)

Endurance was found about the time that this was recorded. Terror was found two or three years earlier. Shackleton didn’t lose anyone on that trip. The boat in which he sailed from Elephant Island to South Georgia is in the national maritime museum at Greenwich in the foyer. The building really isn’t that big. Almost as impressive as Bligh’s voyage after being cast adrift from the bounty.

Best fictional Captain? C.S. Forester's novels tracking the career of Horatio Hornblower from Ensign to Admiral in the Royal Navy at the height of the Age of Sail. And the very well done made for TV adaptations of the earliest portions of these books are clear winners. There's eleven novels and a few short stories.

My little rules beef is this: you cannot have a ship that has fuel for multiple Jump 6's. Each Jump-6 requires fuel of a volume equal to 60% of the ship's tonnage, so two Jump-6's would take fuel equal to 120% of the ship's tonnage. Kinda hard to do.

Sorry Sydney, while Shackleton led the expedition, Captain F. Worsley commanded the Endurance and Lieutenant J. Stenhouse the Aurora. On the Endurance, the second in command was the experienced explorer Frank Wild. The meteorologist was Captain L. Hussey, also an able banjo player. McIlroy was head of the scientific staff, which included Wordie. Frank Worsley, Endurance's captain, was the one who famously navigated the open-boat journey to the 720-nautical-mile-distant South Georgia whaling station [Wikipedia]

Dolphins keep getting brought up in this game and it made me reread Startide Rising, so I’m going to throw my vote for Captain Creideiki of the Streaker, first dolphin space captain and hands down winner (loser?) of the “I thought this was supposed to be a routine research trip?” award. Galactic civil war going on right on top of his crippled ship’s hiding spot, every alien in charted space trying to catch them, and this dolphin’s keeping his three-species crew in line with philosophy and sonar haikus while romancing a goddess in his sleep. Traumatic brain injury couldn’t even take him down for long.

All the dolphin talk in this has me rereading Uplift currently. I think it would be really hard to translate to movies, especially with the dolphin languages, but a long form animated series would be amazing. Startide is the jewel of the series for me but think how fun the ongoing adventures of the gang of Jijo kids from Brightness Reef would be. Animation would also help solve the problems of dolphin facial expressions, ethically working with dolphins, filming and sound underwater, etc, and let the creative team go really wild with all the aliens

I (a nonprofessional but very broadly read science enthusiast) played a scientist in a Traveller game where our GM presented us with a misjump puzzle not too far off this one, GM was a early unmanned space exploration historian, our engineer was played by an actual engineer for Northrop Grumman, we spent half of every session just yelling about experiments and trying to outnerd each other for several months until I recognized a pattern in some data the GM gave us and busted out my (nonprofessional but very broadly read) linguistic and cryptography skillz to figure our way out of something he’d expected to take us a couple sessions and he had to go sit down in another room and figure out what to do next. Traveller truly is a game for the nerd’s nerd, and I love it.

Thomas Cochrane. He was a bad ass lucky British naval commander.

Luck had little to do with it. The US would have a different anthem if he hadn’t been accused of stock market fraud in 1814. He was due to command the fleet that burnt Washington DC and attacked Baltimore. If Cochran had been in charge either he wouldn’t have attacked the fort or would have pressed the attack home. HMS Terror, found in the Arctic, was one of the ships bombarding the fort.

As far as captains I am torn between Sisko, Reynolds, and Mercer. All for kind of the same reasons Sisko just cause he was put in a position having to be a diplomat and keep peace on the station. But also he cared for the crew and the people who lived on the station, Reynolds again how much he cared for his crew but also his ship.

Kirk is my favorite, but Sisko of DS9 is a close second. The picks by the cast are good picks also

Best captains: Scully (Rip Torn) in the John Candy comedy Summer Rental. Peter Ustinov in the title role in Blackbeard's Ghost.

My prevailing theory is that the jump mishap created a time bubble rather than a jump bubble, and The Kate's Gambit entered the Bubble.

As a huge trek nerd I have read almost all 700 star trek novels. I Agree with skid. New Pike is a good blend Kirk and Picard.

16:35 There canonically are sentient spacefaring dolphins in Traveller. There are also a couple of recurring dolphin characters on Star Trek: Lower Decks.

For MAXIMUM space dolphins, I highly recommend David Brin's Uplift series, which posits that sentient dolphins would be just about the best dogfighting space pilots imaginable.
