Voyagers of the Jump is an original adventure using the 2022 2nd Edition Update to the Traveller RPG rules set by Mongoose Publishing.
First published in 1977, Traveller is a science fiction RPG in the vein of The Expanse or Battlestar Galactica. Most who played the original game back in the day remember the robust character creation system where if you push too far and get unlucky with the dice, you can die before you even start playing.

As a decades long GM I can't overstate how impressive it is to watch Seth be a Top Tier player. Weeks of planning based on Psionic not being able to read a shielded mind and Matthew forgets that fact and totally scuppers his plan... Seth: closes mouth firmly and goes with the GMs reading of the situation, adapts and tries something else... Such a classy guy!! That's the player I aspire to be when I'm not the GM and I think so many players could learn from this ❤

Thanks for highlighting this. I have a lot of time in as a GM now (not in Traveller yet and not as much as you) and even well-meaning players can be really challenging when they challenge you based on rules. Sometimes none-too-politely, too :) Whether or not they're right about the rule, during the game often isn't the best time for it.

I'd forgotten for a sec that Seth had any levels in Telepathy, but his handling of the situation was absolutely beautiful. Just shuts up and lets Matthew cook cause he knows the referee won't steer him wrong.

When Pug launched the grenade, Seth went tensed & tight lipped. Have to wonder if he was in fear of being on the players' side of a grenade TPK event. One of his RPG tale is about such happening.

The scene between Pug and the crying Zhodani [from 01:39] was a splendid character moment for Pug - we get to see what the big guy really stands for despite being seemingly "simple" in mindset. 😯👏 Also, this same scene is a deeply humanising moment in how we are to understand the Zhodani himself. He drops his usual aura of deviousness and smugness in this one time. 😳 [Though, admittedly, there is still an unavoidable undercurrent of suspicion with this character at the same time - you are never sure that the Zhodani might not be putting on an elaborate act of Academy Award winning proportions 🤔🧐]

This is the one of the few group actual plays I enjoy watching. Both the story and you guys are interesting! It always comes up during my lunch time, and when I'm working from home (like today), but I often end up been dragged into online meetings Now, that ending, the strange sound? I was SURE Matthew was going to say is that damned evil cat that somehow survived a decade alone in this alien planet :D Great work! Very inspiring

So many amazing things here! Matthew, highest praise--both as a GM, but also for creating the scenario. All of the players, for bring them to life in the face of some really brutal twists and turns. Seth for being a class act as a player who is an expert in the game system.

I don't want this run to end. The characters are so well crafted and fit together extremely badly and so well. Pug and the Zhodani was geniunely quite moving - bit like Frankensteins's Monster and the little blind girl. Then Arthur acts consistently and is just pure Arthur - authentically logical and unemotional. Capt'n Willodene(?) is acutely batty and reminds me of someone I use to work with. Not enough of Swan this time around. . BTW, is the cat all right? I neeeeeeed series 3.

Seth letting Matthew destroy his original plan is a far cry from "What Bug" Seth. And Skid choosing the NPC over a PC is great. I feel most players naturally want to only go with the other players regardless of the "villains" motivations.

On "age": none of these characters are "old" by the standards of anyone who could make an O6 (naval captain, army colonel), and though it gets harder and harder, people at that rank often maintain high levels of physical fitness and are in many ways at the height of their careers. True, they may not go out to carouse at the end of a hard day of training. I know at least one (by no means world-class athlete) who did jump school in his 40s and served as a specops intel NCO in Afghanistan.

I love this show and cast, but 20 hour seasons feel really cramped for this show. Especially with how much fun the riffs are for this group of players.

The difficulty on the lighting, the grenade damaging to power supply, and the Katie starting to take off all feel like GM fait that take things the characters should have more knowledge of and seems to screw them just because the players didn't say this or that thing that the players should have been able to know. I'll keep watching cause the show is fun, but I am not sure what I would do if my dm decided I trusted the crew of the Katie for me and therefore they were able to takeoff without you.

To a point I agree with you. The ship being able to power a cold sleep capsule suggests it has power running for lights and plumbing. I think the crew would have slept inside to be sure they stay away from giant bugs in the night.

No, players have agency. Their decisions have to matter. If you don't set a watch it's not the GM's job to say, "Hey are you not setting a watch" (except with newbies who need a bit of coaching). If the players have said, "we always have a watch" or if they've set watch every other night then GM _should_ check before springing something but if they sometimes do and sometimes don't then it's up to them to make their intentions clear. Similarly in this case: they've been sleeping outside every night, if even one of them had said, "oh, it will be so nice to sleep in a stateroom" or "let's ask Captain X if we can take staterooms" etc then Matthew should have checked where they were sleeping... Otherwise, sorry runs as the story runs... The double cross was telegraphed subtly (as a GM I appreciate the little hints, the Captain being so keen on fridging the Zhodani, the other crew showing up just at the last night). They put the one guy in cold storage who could have warned them and they didn't take any explicit precautions, they shifted their original caution about everyone to focus on the Zhodani and then when he was in the low berth they relaxed. This was a perfectly set double cross and I think the players will appreciate that.

OP: to be clear, I'm not in any way saying you're wrong to have the preference you have. Find the GM whose style matches yours and enjoy gaming the way you prefer, for _sure_ ! I'm addressing the "[The GM] seems to screw them" part of your comment. Nobody is getting screwed in this scene and to say that is a slight to a good GM and many others who have a style that's not your preference 😉 Matthew forgetting how Psi works is a bit tough on Seth but that's a mistake and nobody got screwed there either. ❤️ to you and I hope you enjoy years of gaming the way you like 👍

I would ask you to listen to that part again. The end of the episode is a long task chain of days,weeks, or months at 2:03:30 @WinterOnTheWeb Seth states,"he (referring to the psychic guy) is not sleeping on the ship with us". Then Matt takes over asserts they are sleeping outside qnd then the luck roll. There was no point of interaction that players made. They did not get to make a decision. I am glad they just roll with it. I am sure Matt is going to give them some chance to not be left there. We all make bad calls sometimes, it doesn't make us bad GMs, it just means we are human

@dean8864 The way you describe the scene there does sound a little "on rails" as my old group would have said... I'll rewatch because I might have missed that interaction. I wouldn't approach it that way myself so 👍 to you there but the key as you say is: does he keep the fun going for the players and do they still have a chance to redeem the situation? If so, nobody got screwed but for sure, there's got to be a better way of keeping your story flowing than locking the players on rails...
