I was born in Fajardo, PR and left when I was 3yrs old. Being a Navy brat with 2 Puerto Rican parents I was very lucky to have our culture and language follow me across the globe. That being said, I know exactly what it feels like to be an outsider both in the US and back in PR. I recently went back to visit and the majority of the people accepted me with open arms. But there was all the fair share that tried to make me feel as if I was less for not carrying the accent. Like I was a fake Puerto Rican for not having one. I don’t even have an accent in English so you can’t tell where I’m from. Product of moving around every 2-3 yrs I guess? But like yourself, it really hurt my self esteem and I admire what you’re doing for others. I can only hope that others who simply want to learn another language aren’t dismayed by those type of ignorant people. I know they understood my Spanish just fine when when I’d tell them to go F$&k themselves! To be so proud to be Boricua and to have your own people disrespect for sounding different…thank God it never wavered me from continuing to be bilingual. Thank you and keep up the amazing work. ¡ Somos Boricua como él coquí!

The same happened to be when I came back to PR, but I took pride of being fully bilingual. Love that your family kept speaking Spanish at home.

Thanks for posting this! It’s true that your intonation and emphasis on certain syllables can determine how good you sound. This was a good reminder. Can you do another video with your cousin where you have a natural everyday convo speaking PR Spanish? I think it would be helpful to hear how people really speak in everyday situations.

So helpful! Just started working as an interpreter and while I heard PR Spanish growing up, I'm amazed by how many different ways of speaking there are on la isla. This is great, please keep making these videos!

I've been going on & off learning spanish. I get annoyed because I want to sound more like my family (I'm Nuyorican. Mom stopped talking to us in spanish once we started school). So glad I found your channel. Know I can use what I know and build on it before I get the courage to start having conversations

I thank you for your videos, as a PT that learned from only Mexicans, I was astounded at the different style of speaking, choice of words, lack of the letter "s" in many cases, etc. Now that I work with Puerto Rican people in downtown Wilmington, DE, I really need help. There aren't very many resources available on your type of Spanish. I like reading what he is going to say in Spanish and English, before I hear him saying it.

What I like is that he makes mistakes. Like anyone speaking any language, we’re not speakers. So when I heard him stumbling, it wasn’t that I wasn’t understanding - it’s that he was being a natural speaker! When I make those mistakes, it’s not as important as getting back into the flow of speaking instead of getting embarrassed.
