@Tyler Harris I first moved to Isla Verde to begin a new job at a video production company in Old San Juan. When my contract wasn’t renewed, I started working at Colombo Frozen Yogurt, then I moved around a lot: Isla Verde-Carolina-Ocean Park-Hato Rey-Puerto Nuevo-Guanica. My favorite location was Guanica before returning to the states.

@Tyler Harris I moved to Puerto Rico from Raleigh, NC when I was about 26. I first visited the island as a tourist and fell in love with the people and the food. I had to return for economic reasons while I was still young enough to create a new life for myself.
@vaquera9368

@Tyler Harris all depends where you live in California. Been living here since 1990. Rent used to be $900 for an apartment in the Bay Area. Then it went up to $2-2500! We moved to the country and bought a house and the mortgage was $900. Sold that house. Now after a divorce, I rent a house. You do not want to know what I pay because COVID caused many people from the Bay Area to come up here and rent increased. However, I know people who are renting apartments and paying $800-900. So, it all really depends where you live. You can barely find rentals now. I’d like to move to PR even for a year since I was born in Arecibo and haven’t returned since we moved to the states. I was three years old when we left.
@vaquera9368

@Tyler Harris yeah I get it. We don’t have the hood or ghettos in this area. You’ll find that in So Cal. We have bears, mountain lions, deer, coyotes…lol. True. And the decent areas in So Cal are pricey. I live by Yosemite National Park. We do not even have gangs here. Cost of living is higher but so is the hourly wage. Definitely in cities you won’t be able to afford rent unless you live with roommates or family. Who knows, you might be able to find a decent place. I’m sure if you want it badly you’ll make it happen. Good luck.

The lavabo/laundry sink, we call it “pileta”. It comes in plastic, metal or cement. The kitchen sink we call it “fregadero” cause it’s mainly used to “fregar (lavar) los trastes (platos, vasos, utencilios). Also, la hielera we really call it “neverita”, usually “neverita de playa” because that’s what it’s used for the most or “cooler”. I have to mention that I think your groceries might be that much because you’re buying local (I’m assuming you’re still going to the small market you showed in a video months ago where you recorded walking to it and everything). If you were to buy at a big chain it might be less, but buying local is always great help. Also, the electricity problems with the power going out like that is because, you know, Maria. That was not a regular thing before Maria at least not in the center, north and east side of the island. Nice tour and thanks for sharing!

Hi, PR is fully functional but the electric grid still weak and we do have some power outages once in a while (some areas more that others) but as they say is usually a couple of minutes, I live in Caguas (east-central area) and we have them too. Since Maria (2 years ago), after we got power back we have had about 2 black out that lasted a whole day but since Maria almost every business have generators. Everything else is doing great and our beaches are some if not the best in the world. Tourism booming! Come on over!

Hi guys...love what you do. I live in Vega Alta (north shore of Puerto Rico). I saw that you paid $80 for 150mb internet with Liberty. I use Liberty and I pay $86.xx for 100mb, phone line and like basic cable channels (local channels + some US and Latin channels); I think if I pay $3 or $5 more I can get the upgrade to 150mb. Just check with the company or their webpage if you have the latest offer from them. Also water service cost can change if your house is connected to the sewer system or if it is on the country side and the use water goes to a Septic tank. Any ways you look like a lovely couple... keep the great work and take care.

$68 electric. Take into consideration that they do not use their A/C they are doing without just to save money. Could you imagine if they ran the A/C? I'm sure they keep the lights to a minimum. I rent a 1 bedroom appartment in Toa Baja (near San Juan) completely furnished for $600, utilities included. Has ac in the bedroom for sleeping, cable tv internet etc. And its not a shoe box. And i never had issues renting it to locals who better know how renting works in PR. So you can now have a reference point... For those who never been in PR, you need to come first and see prior committing to a long term lease. Those comments that mentions people rented a house or apt for $350, probably is in a remote location, unfurnished (or old finishes), without utilities internet cable, or not in a nice area. So...Yes....you can pay less....but you will recieve less...and/or will live in a less desirable area. Electricity and Water (utilities) are expensive, but can expect to pay between $80 to $140 with the ac on at night and do no waste it. Water you start paying around $28 .... using it or no...not like the electricity (thats the base block charge...note: you pay for water...sewage or disposal of used water...and a company fee which is expensive!!!). It a little bit more complex that that..but you have now an idea of how it works. Food is similar to bit expensive that in the States. Local food DEPENDING where you go naught be cheap as $5 (some supermarkets sell local food cheaper....daily specials)..but dont expect to eat like a King for $3. Not in PR.

I’ve lived in Bayamón for close to a year now and we have only had 1 blackout that lasted for a few hours. On average ours only last roughly 10 seconds. We used to have that fairly often but we haven’t had any blackouts in our area for a few months now (hope I didn’t just jinx myself!). I would say our average cost of living is very comparable though! Must be pretty average throughout the island!

I think you guys have been lucky with la luz. We lived in Mayagüez for a couple of years and our light went out pretty often (especially during hurricane season) and more than a couple of times it went out for more than a day (2 1/2 days once). But that was also the year before Maria. Love the videos. We miss the island everyday!

My husband tells me that where we live in Camuy, they only read the electric meter every other month haha. So we would get the same bill for 2 months and then switch to a new bill the following 2 months. It was so odd!

When the car passed by with reggaeton so loud I lost it!!! I don’t miss that at all 😂 There are some nice places with vegan options closer to Boquerón such as Friend’s Cafe (Litoral-Mayaguez), Cabra Tostá (Calle Morell- Mayaguez), Migas (PR 114- Mayaguez) and Wakey Monkey (Ave. Universidad Interamericana- San German). Those were my favorite spots to go grab coffee and something good and healthy to eat.

For foreigners the puerto rican dialect and the mexican dialect obviously is completely different, which it does matter because some Mexican words can be offensive in Puerto Rico and vice versa. For instance when I say biscochito in puerto rico thats a cake while ive noticed that my Mexican neighbor did look at me weird lol because it means something else which I wont say here. In some other latin american countries could mean handsome or cute guy. In Bayamon PR lavado for us is cleaning our private parts which for Mexicans is the washing machine and/or laundry area. We call a cooler a neverita. Both beautiful cultures, people and language but for foreigners is best to know what it means in each country.

I live here in PR and since my job is @ 45 mnts away I spent about $60 weekly in gas plus @ $50+ in tolls. I guess you don't go out of Boqueron to much. That's what I have to point.... also in regards of the "hielera", I guess you say is a most in PR because of the black outs you had with electricity because other than that we don't use it nor have it in the kitchen. If we have one it will be store away and use only for the beach, or if electricity is gone for long period of times (like when we had the Hurricane) or if we have a party. It is use mostly to place the ice and keep drinks cold or if we have no power then that's where we will placed meats or anything that needs to be at a cool temperature but that is not something that happens often. Other than that LOVE your video and that you are sharing so much about this beautiful island. Electricity is expensive here but if you find something unusual on your bill make your claim at the AEE office or online. Boqueron is a tourist area, same as San Juan, Dorado, Aguadilla... but I think Aguadilla will be cheaper... now by saying this it means it is normal for your rent to be high I am more towards to the center and for a house w 3 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, laundry, family, living room, dinning room, kitchen and garage I pay @ $500 for rent and is not furnish so your rent is high because is furnish and the area. Also want to mention that I LOVED your video explaining puertorrican spanish, that was awesome and I shared!!! Enjoy your time in PR!!! ***In the oven since you do vegetarian you can do bake potato. I use it mostly for meats and desserts ***

As a born and raised Puerto Rican I should tell you that the better deals on rent are based on "knowing" someone who "knows" someone else, knowing the abuela, tio, amigo or something to that extent who has a house for rent, that is how you'll score that super awesome house by the beach for $500 or that amazing mountain house for $400 (only "problem" is that you would be doing the yard work yourself but that can be fun if your into the garden stuff), if you go through a realtor your prices are going to be much much higher, I can guarantee you I can find a much cheaper house in that same area if I tried that way or maybe even a website called clasificados online which is very local and all the locals use it. unfortunately a lot of the economy in PR is underground.
