Puerto Rico is a vacationer's paradise. But what is it like to actually live there? Here are our thoughts on living in Puerto Rico after two years on the island.
Disclaimer: Our intent was to give an honest reflection on our time living in Puerto Rico. Every country on Earth has it’s pros and cons. We choose to live in Puerto Rico when we could live practically anywhere else. We decided to make this video for anyone considering making a move who wants an honest opinion on several different aspects that caught our attention during our time living here.

Once The United States took over Puerto Rico the flag became illegal, the people of the country protested and fought for 10 years to get their flag back. That’s why is so important for us to show pride in our flag. Because it was taken away from us at one point.

About the pot holes, I don't know I've you've heard, but in a town on the mountains they celebrated a huge pot hole's birthday. The community got tired of waiting for the Departamento de Carreteras (I'm not sure what the English equivalent would be), so they did this very sarcastic birthday party and then filled the pot hole themselves using materials that they bought themselves after everyone in the community pitched in with money. The reason why people are so patriotic is because until 1952-1953 it was illegal to show our flag. You could be arrested by the Feds if they saw you even with a tiny one. One of our hombres ilustres, Don Pedro Albizu Campos was arrested and tortured after fighting for the elimination of the colony status and for the right of puertorricans to have equal treatment as the states.

@@SpanishandGo guys, i truly recommend you to read: WAR AGAINST ALL PUERTO RICANS by Nelson Denis; you’ll definitely will have the other side of the story and will see the proudness with other eyes. You’ll read stuff after the hispanoamerican war and how the transition was; the history that is not being teach at schools. In my experience; i never had a Puerto Rico history class at school further more than Taínos lived here then Spaniards came then Estadounidenses, learned more at the university, then just by reading other books on my own.

I lived in Puerto Rico for just over six years and absolutely LOVED it! You were correct, though, about how challenging it can be to get things done. That being said, I learned tolerance, patience, and how to 'go with the flow.' I also ran a business and experienced all the rules and regulations that went along with it. I remember a US-tourist that entered the cafe where I was working complaining to her husband about the way things were done in Puerto Rico and "how much better it is in the states." I got sick of overhearing her rambling and asked her 'Excuse me, ma'am. Do you go to your neighbor's house and try to rearrange their furniture?' She said, "Of course not!" I replied 'You are a GUEST here and Puerto Ricans like their furniture the way it is.' I then pointed the way to the airport. Puerto Rico, like anywhere else, has its positives and negatives. Could I live there again? Absolutely, in Guanica, Aguadilla, Cabo Rojo....yes, 'en la Isla.'

But then look when an outside source comes to make a business and the process is quickly done. It's sad, unless you're from outside you'll be cock blocked by the government. Which is sad, considering you're a foreigner doing the process the "local" way, so double whammy there lmao.

I've been in San Juan for about a month now for work and have 2 more weeks. It is a beautiful island and most of the people I've met have been amazing. I haven't had the chance to explore as much as I want, but I am scheduled to come back at the end of January for about 6 more weeks. The island, the culture, and the people are all beautiful! They have every right to be proud!

@@skunkdog6338 thank you for the recommendation! I'm going to pass on the caves. I'm a bit petrified of bat's lol. I know it's irrational, but that's why it's called a phobia. So far, my plans for my next trip include a boat tour of Laguna Grande and a historic tour of Old San Juan.

I'm in a wheelchair. Did that mean I won't be able to drive there? I'm a former CDL A and B professional driver and very safe. I also worked in law enforcement for 20 years. Now I'm concerned about being able to get around.

My dad was full Puerto Rican, I never knew him. My mom is German and raised me in America. I've always felt a longing to know that part of me that I never learned. I feel like I belong in Puerto Rico. The island is calling me. Soy Boricua.

Creo que hemos sufrido mucho como pueblo, bajo España y bajo E.E.U.U., nos dicen que no somos un país, que somos ciudadanos de segunda clase, muchos se han burlado de nuestra forma de hablar que no es otra cosa que lo que nos legaron de Canarias y Andalucía, tantos años de persecución y carpeteo solo por ondear nuestra bandera, tantos intentos de eliminar nuestra lengua... esto ha despertado ese orgullo y garra, por eso tantas banderas, por eso ese “slogan” de yo soy boricua pa’ que tu lo sepas” ( tema del rapero Taíno, 1995), por eso esa canción que dice “yo sería borincano aunque naciera en la luna”. Es la resistencia a ser absorbidos, es recordarnos a nosotros mismos que tenemos identidad propia con defectos y virtudes pero propia.

Como dijo Kanorys aquí los profesores son los primeros que critican nuestro español por que piensan que deberíamos hablar igual que los españoles de Madrid. Pero lo que ellos no quieren admitir es que nuestro español provino de Andalucía y las Islas Canarias y allá hablan casi igual que nosotros. En este pais han tratado de hacer ver como que nosotros somos “defectuosos”. Todavía recuerdo el comercial de TV de “idioma defectuoso, pensamiento defectuoso.”, odio ese comercial a muerte.

Yes, those of us who favor independence from the United States Empire are a minority. So were those who wanted the Original 13 British Colonies to be independent of Great Britain. Independence only requires a committed minority. It does not require a majority. FYI: Borinquen is not "US soil...". It is an "American" colony. And, yes, Puerto Ricans living in the United States are part of a diaspora. "American" colonial policies have driven us from our homeland.

Being from the island, I'm happy with the information you provided but I do have to tell you, you live in the best part of Puerto Rico, San Juan, which is basically kept in perfect condition in most areas for tourist. The xenophobia is not just because of our past, but also because Puerto Rico is usually portrayed as a vacation destination by americans and it gets exhausting to only be seen as a vacation place, even if we benefit from it. I'd also like to welcome you both to explore the other sides of Puerto Rico, not right now, but theres alot more culture I think you both would love. For example, El Carnaval de Ponce, El Festival del Juey o Cangrejo, etc. Other than that, great video!! And ignore the xenophobes, enjoy your stay!

Agree with you on the xenophobia Neri! I’m sorry you’ve had to deal w that. As far as San Juan being well kept, I moved 2 years ago from the island and traveled this year and unfortunately I found San Juan to be so deteriorated! It’s so disheartening to see our little island falling apart. But our natural resources never cease to amaze 💖

as a puerto rican from the states, i think the xenophobia is a result of continued colonialism, which i'm so happy you touched on. act 60 directly benefits americans coming to puerto rico over puerto ricans who often have to leave because they cannot afford to live in their own home country. tax breaks for wealthy americans does encourage gentrification, and is neo-colonialist. the jones act and debt has acted as its own hurricane on the archipelago and its people, so this distrust and anger is warranted. i am angry and i don't live there, though i wish to one day. i think the best thing you can do as someone who isn't boricua is listen to puerto ricans and fight with them against gentrification, against the jones act and the tax breaks for foreigners, and talk to other gringos and foreigners to educate them. if puerto rico is your home, cherish the people and their needs, and uplift them.

In Hawaii people from Puerto Rico are called Bodinkees(Bo-Dink-Eez) We also call PR ‘Little Hawaii.’ Both Island nations were stolen, both have trade winds, mountains, good surf and blue water.

I moved to Caguas 🇵🇷 last year and I'm loving it. My sister in law is mexican she's was born and raised in California and she moved here with my brother about 10 months ago to the Aguadilla area they bought a beautiful house close to crash boat beach 🏖️ Love the channel by the way 😉

Do not worry about what some citizens of the Island of Puerto Rico say, there are only 1 or 2 percent of them who believe in independence, the vast majority of us like the arrival of our compatriots from the United States to our beautiful land, everybody is welcome, God bless you and be happy on the Island.

Your videos are very thoughtful, caring, and enjoyable. Thank you so much for this! My husband and I visited Durango, Mexico a few years ago where his family is from. We hit a huuuuuge pot hole (which was covered by what we thought was a small puddle) and damaged our rental car badly. I know the two of you have the best of intentions and you have empathy/compassion for those who have been colonized and oppressed. Many groups in the U.S. have experienced this (Asian Americans, Latinos, African Americans, Indigenous peoples, etc.). . .Even though Hawai'i may have statehood and yes the residents can "vote," many Native Hawaiians have had to endure centuries of colonialism, land dispossession, cultural theft, etc. as well. I'm not sure "xenophobia" is what Puerto Ricans are expressing when they distrust outsiders. Rather it's more a reaction to the centuries of oppression and perhaps a sense of empowerment and self-determination (including the "flag-waving"). . . It seems both of you are very aware and willing to learn and to understand various Puerto Rican perspectives (those who want Independence & Sovereignty, those who want to become the 51st state of the U.S., or those who want to remain a territory). . . Thank you for addressing some of these issues with care, sensitivity and respect.

I’m 49 I was born in Carolina PR but live in Chicago since 76. Most of my family still lives there. I’d love to move back some day. No way I could make as much there as I do here. Maybe closer to retirement. Love it there.

I am 61, my Partner is 67 and retired. Our primary residence is in Miami. We purchased a vacation/retirement home in PR last year. I am going to take early retirement at 62 so that we can spend most or our time in PR. But Miami will always be our primary residence, because we don't want to give up voting in US elections. You should consider taking a early retirement.

¡Hola chicos! I'm a Spanish teacher who have used some of your videos to share with students in the past, and was just wondering if you were still in PR (I'm Puerto Rican). I see now that actually are, and I'm glad. I hope that despite all the things that are not that great, you are having a good time. About the crazy bureaucracy... it can be way worse. I've lived in France for over ten years, and let me tell you, I think that bureaucracy is a French invention (after all, the word comes from the French bureau, which means 'office'). Anyway, I wish you keep enjoying live in my island. Al the best!!

With regards to PR pride, I remember in the 1980s, when ever flying to PR, when landing, all the passengers would clap and cheer. It still happens today but not as intensely. Just as I was finishing my comment, it’s brought up in the video lol.

The display of the Puerto Rico Flag was once banned by the USA . Gag Law. Could explain the why for the additional patriotic pride. Side note......USA does have an extreme version of this also. People put 20 flags on their pickup trucks nowadays.

I was born in Puerto Rico, but been in the States since I was 15 years old. But I still eat all those root vegetables. I love them, in stews, just boiled with salt and olive oil. I wish I can move there again and buy a a small ranchito. I love your videos, thanks for showing my as is. The good and the bad. It is like everywhere.

Very well summarized! This is also my 2nd year in Puerto Rico with my wife and son. I would add #18 the volume the music is played in public, in some bars and especially from cars!! It’s a little absurd in my opinion. But I still love it here!!

History is a big part of PR life. In PR many process are a multiple steps process. The reason for expediters is, have people stand in 3 different lines in 3 different parts of towns for you. Many expediters are a 1 stop shop, for instance for your license, they have an in-house doctor to fill out your paperwork and they print out the forms which are available online (wasn’t always the case), get the tax stamps and you just go with all the correct paperwork and pick up your license. Think of them as your wedding planner and are not a thing of PR, you can find expediters in the mainland as well. Sure you can plan your own, but you do this once and might miss something, they do this for living. In terms of xenofobia. The vast majority of PR are welcoming, yet there’s a minority that is very loud. Additionally, you might think to yourself this is not the way this should be done. This is when people become defensive. It happens even among Puerto Rican’s. Sadly, a good chunk of Puerto Rican’s educate their kids to feel Puerto Rico is less. This is why is ok to throw trash on a beach in PR, even tho they wouldn’t do it in Punta Cana. The education motto is study, and hop on a plane to the mainland. Is non-locals like yourself whom can teach (with all the frustrations it may cause) locals to value this Gem called Puerto Rico. In terms of economy, PR is a high income economy. PR GDP per capita is higher than most if not all of Latin America and even some European countries. In terms of sales, PR has some of the highest sales performance per sq ft in the country (USA). It is easy to live here, but you need to read a lot. Apps, online systems, where to are most knows. Blessings!

I can definitely understand the proudness and love for our culture and island when being suppressed for so many years and treated as a possession without any representation (one of the biggest reasons the US became a country). Sad to hear how some of them reacted to seeing you both as 2 wrongs don’t make things right. Glad you’re both bringing attention to the island.

I was flying in to Copenhagen in 2002 to visit my Danish girlfriend. When the announcement of the approach to Copenhagen come over the speakers the entire plane broke out in applause. But it could have been that the plane had a soccer team on board that flight.

Love your videos. After watching several of them I decide I am moving to Puerto Rico while I keep my job in the US remotely. Do you guys have any recommendations for finding a community, friends, how to find an apartment, etc? I’m coming in March on vacation to visit. I haven’t decided where in PR I want to live. It’s all so beautiful! I may do Airbnb for two weeks in different parts of the island to experience it before choosing a location. Anyway, any help you can provide I would really appreciate.
