Many forget that Puerto Rico beat the USA team on two previos ocasiones (the ones made of college playes). Once in México and the Pan American games in Cuba and in the World Cup in Argentina in 1990. It hardly made the news in United States but it did shook the United States Basketball Commitee. 2 years later the formed the Dream Team for the 1992 Olympics.

Yo vi este juego cuando estaba en Kwuait, éramos sobre 50 puertorriqueños y casi la misma cantidad de estadounidenses. Ellos se comenzaron a salir de la caseta en donde estábamos viendo el juego. Al terminar eramos solo puertorriqueños que porpoco tumbamos la caseta celebrando... jajaja que recuerdos.

I remember watching this game live. it was either a saturday or sunday afternoon. And I was going crazy. I am a Puerto Rican. Born in the US, and i'm a veteran. I love my Country and I love Puerto Rico. Watching this game all I wanted and hoped was for Puerto Rico to have a good outing. And make it competitive. I didn't not think it was going to go down the way it did. USA had Iverson, Marbury, Duncan, Stoudamire, Lebron, Wade, Carmelo. and PR had arroyo and Ayuso and? But for that day all the stars aligned. And they played great. And they played hard. They deserved the win. And the US was hit with a dose of reality right in the mouth!

It's hard to believe but Puerto Rico outplayed and outcoached the US on this game. The strategy of Puerto Rico of limiting the US players to only outside shots, worked like a charm. This will always be one of the most remembered victories of our Puertorican National Team for years to come because we did not beat that US team full of HALL OF FAME NBA PLAYERS, but we spanked them without a doubt. This usa team had 3 hall of famers in wade, lebron and iverson and popovich the coach who is also a hof coach. That victory by puerto rico against usa is no small feat and they beat that day possibly one of the greatest player the world has seen in lebron.

This was such a huge embarrassment considering that Puerto Rico is a small U.S. territory. And the U.S. lost by 19. It was much worse than the 1988 USA team losing to Russia in the Olympics. That team was U.S. college kids vs. Russian pro players and Russia was a world basketball power at the time and won the gold medal. And the U.S. only lost by 6 in 1988. In 2004, Puerto Rico didn't medal (although the U.S. lost to gold medal winner Argentina too)
