Sting actually helped Puff Daddy perform this at the 1997 MTV Video Music Awards. To be fair to Lex, when Prince had his band called New Power Generation, his two female backup singers were known as Peaches and Cream.

You gotta remember all the big names in hip hop from the late 80s through the mid 90s grew up with hardly any rap. It was still mostly in the streets in the 80s when they were young. So they were taking samples from rock, RnB, funk, and everything else they were exposed to or found and rapped over it, and established what we know as classic, older hip hop today. It's not like rappers now who might have listened to hip hop their whole lives. So artists back then of course knew all the rock hits and much much more.

The key word there is "samples". Puffy didn't use samples in a subtle way and mix them. He just ripped a track whole and laid garbage flows over it. It is all he does.

the original Police song was VERY well known. so when Puff released this song, everyone also knew it was a sample of the original, and a tribute to BIG.i guess over time younger people just didnt know.

I was born in 93 and I definitely heard this version all over the place first while growing up. I don't remember my parents commenting on it either, my mum liked this and never said anything. Same with Ghetto Superstar, noone mentioned that and Islands in the Stream in the same sentence around me. Ghetto Superstar I only connected the dots myself in the last 10 years if I'm honest 😂

Judas Priest did 2 covers I know of, Diamonds and Rust and Green Manalichi. The Doors Alabama Song (Whiskey Blues) is a cover from 1920's German song. Wrathchild America did a fantastic cover of Pink Floyd's Time. Just a few I can toss off the top of my head.

I bought this album the day it came out because it captured the tragedy of his death in a way that made it feel like I wasn’t alone in how unfair it felt and how sad it made me over somebody I never met. It’s a beautiful tribute to a friend, father, son and a legend in rap and American culture. Helped to cope with how cruel and pointless it felt to lose Pac and then Biggie over nothing. Nipsey was probably the next time I really felt that angry and sad over somebody I never met.

Before so many of the young popular stars were taken too soon, I remember feeling heartache for them all knowing at that time it was only a matter OF time. No amount of upward and forward direction or money could protect them, at the least we got to hear and see history being made and talent being appreciated. No beef is worth ending a life, especially taking the truly gifted out of the world.

i lost my best friend last year he always lived life to the fullest to the very last day. there was the 1st Song i listened to after he had passed, the pains there still, his anniversary is coming up in july so its one of the hardest days i try not to think about but still morn. i plan on using this song as a tribute slideshow for him soon

@@crucialtaunt5717 it’s not weird at all- smallest to largest. It’s also far more useful given that the first thing you see is the thing you need. The day changes every day, the month not so often. The other way that makes sense (especially for coding) is year/month/day. But at no point ever is month/day/year useful or sensical. I get why USians do it- it’s because they say January 8th etc. but there’s no need to change the way it’s written just for that. And even Seppos say it the other way around sometimes, when they say “the Fourth of July”. There’s no excuse. 😊

When this song was released it was the chorus that made it money. Nobody remembered or sang the verse, they just sang the chorus. If the remake changed the chorus as well as it did the verses, the song would have tanked.

A lot of rockers from the original era always resented rappers using riffs from original musicians. They consider it to be ripping them off. Just because of the time it takes to be a good guitarist or bassist or drummer, singer, songwriter, etc. I personally like all music. But know a ton of musicians that never even give rap or hip hop a chance with these full song samples. Glad you guys covered both versions. Have a good night.

I like to think that musicians do know a lot of music from across different genres, and I think a lot do. However, even if he didn’t listen to the Police, per se, he would have heard this song. Being his age, it would have been almost impossible for him not to have heard it in the 80s and even beyond.

The's also Peaches and Herbs a soul R&B act from the 70's. They sang a song called Reunited, which was played at my grade 8 graduation. I would suggest you check out some of the greatest soul acts from the 60's and 70's, which is part of African American heritage.

Check out the Beastie Boys’ Paul’s Boutique album for a master class in sampling. It blows my mind every time I think about how many popular hip hop songs are just reusing songs from the past. Also check out Steely Dan and see if you recognize any of their sound. Diddy, I believe also made a song that used a Led Zeppelin song so much that they ended up collaborating.
