You're right. It's a little too close to the 'it was all a dream/movie/metaphor for filmmaking' analysis. I was just trying to help people get some sleep about it. Side note. I've had a green bulb with me for 2 decades that I'd want back if it was taken. It has sentimental value to me. Still. I like the idea of Marsellus messing with everyone.

Same here I thought the exactly the same thing as they know good of the original description of their own mafia boss and he didn't want them to staghorn him it give him up to law enforcement agency officers 👮 💂 👲 👳 👴 👵 🚓 🚔 🚐 🚚 🚛 🚗 🚘 🚣 🚁 ✈ 🚲 ⛵ 🚨 themselves Especially detectives plus the way vincent vega looks like into the briefcase plus if look at Ringo his eyes are also droopy as if he is also affected by some kind of barbitute or perhaps a narcotic or maybe even a intoxicating agent responsible for delivering confusion however, that doesn't explain why they would continue to take the risk carrying the briefcase around especially since police officers often run sniffer police dogs with them which makes me wonder why the pair would take such risks so basically it's more likely it's some kind of stolen property though, some kind of opioid is even more likely to be the contents of the briefcase

I saw a video once that made it ridiculously clear what was in the briefcase. The movie is a modern retelling of the quest for the Holy Grail. Galahad is the only man holy enough to deliver the grail to King Arthur, so obviously he corresponds to Jules. Arthur is also betrayed by his treacherous son Mordred, his adulterous wife Guinevere, and his dissembling knight Sir Lancelot, strongly paralleling Marcellus' betrayal by Butch, Mia, and Vincent respectively. And Merlin the Magician corresponds to Wolf, and so on. The grail is something that people would recognize on sight, but would struggle to believe that it's actually there in front of them, very neatly matching people's reactions to the thing in the briefcase. There are a bunch of other supporting details, most notably Butch's rescue of Marcellus with a sword. Visual allusions to Indiana Jones would be apropos for obvious reasons.

He was indeed lying. Just like he was lying when he said that he would allow ringo and his girlfriend to walk away with the firearm weapon 🔫 plus the bag so most likely it was some kind of narcotic. Most likely strawberry Crack cocaine. why would marcellas Wallace give a gold watch to dope peddlers in a briefcase and sent to hitmen to get it back. So it's most likely laced heroin or perhaps even strawberry cocaine - this ties in also explains the glow

QT has not given an innocuous answer when he says ' it is whatever you want it to be'. He has given a precise answer. Think about who has actually looked into the case. Ringo "the weak" and Vincent "the tyranny" of evil men". Before I realized this I assumed the contents was Grace. Then, I realized that I am a christian and that is what I would "what it to be" just as "the weak" and "the tyranny of evil men" would see "whatever they want it to be." Both Vincent and Ringo respond the same way to the contents as that contents is "whatever they want it to be" Marsellus represents the devil as both Vincent and Jules (before his conversion) serve Marsellus as 'the tyranny of evil men". This explains why the combinaton to the case is 666. 666 is the number of man, the number of the beast, or, that which keeps man's soul from uniting with God. The contents of the case, then, is sin, or, the beguilement of sin's supposed glory. It is your worst fear disguised as your greatest desire. It is whatever would tempt you to sell your soul and separate you from God, eternally. This is why Jules never looks at it and it is why he was able ultimately succeed in becoming 'the shepard'.

As I understand, the original plan was to have the case filled with the diamonds Mr Pink took off with at the end of *Reservoir Dogs*, but Tarantino decided to throw in the yellow light as tribute to an old B-movie where a similar item represented a block of fissionable material for a bomb. I do have to say though, I love the idea that the case shows the person who opens it whatever they want; it reminds me of the Mirror of Erised from Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, which was a seriously underused concept.

Nikita Lane I think it is a great theory though. It would make sense since terintino likes to connect his movies.like how Mr blonde is Vincents brother, but if the world is connected that way that means that pulp fiction and Reservoir Dogs share the same world. Meaning both Mr white and Mr wolf both exist in the same world so u guess there are some people that look exactly the same in the great world of terintino films.
@IVEGOTPEEINMYEYE
@IVEGOTPEEINMYEYE 7 жыл бұрын
perhaps pulp fiction takes place before reservoir dogs and mr white is the wolf and mr blonde is in jail after the events of the proposed movie Terintino was supposedly threatening to do called the vega brothers. the events of the vega brothers may have landed blonde in jail and force vincent to flea to amsterdam for 3 years. it would badly explain mr pink's aversion to tipping cuz he worked at jack rabbit slims and got shit tips or some such things. Vincent dies while blonde is in prison, the wolf gets stuck in a job with a rat, causing him to drastically change and a disgruntled buddy holly, fed up with being a waiter turns to a life of crime. i can't really place ringo but its not a very sound theory anyways.

Notice that Jules doesn't ever look in the briefcase, and the only characters whose points of view we follow that don't die are those who never saw/had anything to do with the briefcase. This even includes Uma Thurman, who did temporarily die before being resuscitated, since she never interacted with the briefcase.
@LibertyRapsher
@LibertyRapsher Жыл бұрын
Also it could be that money blinds. money corrupts. As we know Jules decides he's going to wander the land... he has no need for money and he gives what money he has in his wallet to the thief... he would have even given him the suitcase, but as he said it doesn't belong to him. I think the suitcase has money in it and the glow and the reaction is simply a metaphor since money blinds/corrupts and gets everyone in trouble throughout the movie. The money in the suitcase could be Quentin's or the movie studios and perhaps and the 666 is perhaps Quentin sold his soul for $... who knows or it could just simply be a metaphor for money in general.

"Banjo Boy" was "Pinocchio" and the guy behind him was "The Blue Fairy" or the "Sprite". if you look at the t-shirt Jules is sporting you can see the "Big Kahuna" aka Mickey Mouse. This explains why God saved their asses from those bullets... because they just got "slipped a Mickey" and to top it off the washed him down with a "Sprite", which is a veiled jab at the leader of "The Fox Force 5", which is all that's going on here... trying to "rip on" the Fox Force 5. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/bLhpnLiV0Jmpiac.html Isaiah 66:6 A voice of noise from the city, a voice from the temple, a voice of the LORD that rendereth recompence to his enemies.

I actually went back and re-watched the film after seeing your video about the gold watch, and I noticed something - nearly every character and scene in the film is lit in a creamy golden light, and gold and yellow feature prominently in sets and wardrobes. Given that production designers and directors typically use limited color palettes to establish themes in characters and sets, I began thinking - perhaps the contents of the briefcase is the cinema. The characters and stories we rely on for entertainment, enlightenment, aspirations, dreams. The sum of the effort and imagination of artists through the history of the medium, a thing Quentin Tarantino has stated repeatedly as being wholly responsible for the man he is and the work he does, and something he values above everything else in the world. The contents of the briefcase is the experience of the cinema.

As can see he easily lets them in meaning that most likely he was a traitor for the group there though , was scared witless so it's more likely some kind of scarey dangerous powerful radiation as most suitcases are black where can easily see the yellow meaning multiple things plus most likely the suitcase was opened upside down plus another thing why would marcellas Wallace trust a obvious drug addict with the suitcases combination

Here is what's in the case. It's GOLDEN chicken McNuggets. McDonald's logo is referred to as the GOLDEN arches. Jules asks Vincent "We happy?" during the scene where they obtain the case. Vincent replies "We happy!" This is in reference to McDonald's happy meal. Not to mention the fact these 2 character's talk about fast food restaurants(including the GOLDEN arches) before getting to the scene, where Jules enjoys a "tasty burger".

Man, not sure what happened to Rob’s message. I wanted to reply directly, anyway he kind of says it explicitly but I think Rob is saying the briefcase is/contains the fruit of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil (I.e. the forbidden fruit). 666 represents the evil and the inherent beauty in the box represents the good. Those that attempt to “consume” the fruit (I.e. open or steal the briefcase) are punished by God. Those who resist prosper. Took me 3 years to put this together.

Mia says ''the truth is that no one knows why Marsellus threw Tony out of that window except Marsellus and Tony''. It's pretty much clear that Marsellus' 'embarrassing secret' was discovered. Also Jules says, 'Since then he's kind of developed a speech impairment'....implying that Marsellus also deliberately broke his vocal chords to hide his secret.

The ending of your video chooses to stick to QT's own thoughts on the matter, that it's almost irrelevant. We don't need to know, but our want will fuel many more viewings of the film and theories to occur. So many dislikes for a discussion that deepens our understanding while ultimately leaving the answer up to us. Much like the director has chosen for his movie, if that edited video is any indication. It's the "Pulp Fiction" magazine the film uses for the poster. In other words, it is smut with Mia as the cover girl. 666 represents a challenge for both the viewer and Marsellus. In Marsellus' case it is the quest to remove all copies of it from public view, perhaps this is the last one in circulation. Tarantino also has an admitted sexual fascination with the actress who play's Mia Wallace and I believe he put her in the briefcase in a way that secretly reveres her while at the same time making it the centerpiece to the film. He thinks of her as gold.

I'm suprised that you didn't mention that the glowing suitcase mcguffin is a plot device used multiple times in previous films. These include the 1955 film noir 'Kiss Me Deadly' which has been noted as a huge influence on Tarantino. It's also used in the film 'Repo Man'. I think Tarantino lifted it from Kiss Me Deadly, because thats what he does. He takes really good concepts from various films and mashes them together to create something new. Great film and great video Rob.

I'm surprised nobody has mentioned that the "ambiguous glowing briefcase thing" was not an original idea.. I first saw it in a film called "Repo Man".. made long before Pulp Fiction.. same running theme throughout that film.. a brief case that mesmerizes those who look at the contents and glows off the people's faces as they look inside.. never revealing what is actually inside.. Q T ripped the idea. it's so obvious I figured it was a tip of the hat to that film.. but I guess not..

Yeah but in Repo Man it was sort of hinted that they were just alien corpses or something. And 10 years in fact, thats how long. The ambiguous plot device is a lot older than Repo Man. Rosebud for example, its called a macguffin. No one in the plot really knows what it is or why its there but its the driving force of a lot of narrative. I am glad you mentioned Repo Man though, great movie.

I guess it just bugs me when artist don't acknowledge one another.. they are all taking from one another.. just would like Quinton to throw "Otto" and Harry Dean a bone.. steer a new audience towards that film.. The Samuel L Jackson character saved all the patrons getting slaughtered by the two robbers (the patrons represented how many people were killed throughout the movie). It's possible the briefcase holds someone's fate. When Marcellus Wallace (Ving Rhames) went to Butch's (Bruce Willis) apartment to kill him, Marcellus is ran over possible to die from his injuries. When he chases Butch in the pawn shop, and the pawn shop one calls his friend and brings out a gimp to torture Marcellus, Marcellus could of been killed if Butch didn't save him. I notice anyone that has possession of that briefcase avoided death. When Marcellus wife (Uma Thurman) overdosed and was revived, it was because the briefcase was returned.

I've always thought it was desire itself which was contained in the briefcase. And mostly this is because Jules is the only one who has 'risen above' desire and the only one not particularly interested in it. The "It's whatever the audience wants it to be"-excuse is such a damn copout, if you ask me: We hear it with "Total Recall" and "Pulp Fiction" is no exception. All I can say about the briefcase is that it must have spiritual-origin behind it, hence the "666" combination.

Matthew Alexander Lemma actually the director of total recall said that none of it happened, the implant at Recall was "blue sky on Mars." the flash at the end of the movie was Schwarzenegger being labodimized. Verhoeven: And we get to the music, we go back to the, let's say, "is [?] reality shot", isn't it? Because everything, at the end, I have suggested that that's really where his brains are--he's lobotomized at the end, isn't it, if you follow the dream story. Edgemar told him at the end, Dr. Edgmar played by Roy Brocksmith, told him at the end of the story you will be lobotomized, that might be the end of the movie, isn't it? Because that's why we faded to white instead of going to black, because his brains are blown out. And so the whole story might be a dream, and ultimately nothing of all this happened, he all invented it, and because they couldn't bring him back to reality anymore, they decided to lobotomize him. www.google.com/url?sa=t&source=web&rct=j&url=scifi.stackexchange.com/questions/96148/did-douglas-quaid-experience-total-recall-in-total-recall&ved=2ahUKEwjjrN3BmeXZAhUPuVkKHX3MACUQFjABegQICBAB&usg=AOvVaw0n_5T5lZpkej4DFwnCezxE

It's obviously an apparatus for trapping lions in the Scottish Highlands. I know several people have dismissed the MacGuffin explanation, but that is a failure to look at the function of the prop in the story. Whether the briefcase is intended to be a supernatural object or gold, or whatever, it doesn't matter- the briefcase functions as a MacGuffin. What matters is the roll it plays in the film. It is an "object of desire." The purpose of the object of desire in any story is designed to reveal characters' inner conflicts. Inner conflict can be described as a the relationship between a character's conscious desire (to obtain the object of desire) and their unconscious need (the moral lesson the character needs to learn about the universe). The measures characters take to pursue, protect, sacrifice, etc the Object of Desire reveals the nature of their character and in some cases serves to illustrate their character arc (the arc is the moment when the conscious desire gives way to the unconscious need- fundamentally changing the character's values). Even if Tarantino secretly intended the briefcase to contain a soul it is irrelevant to its function in the story, because in practical terms it served as a MacGuffin. The same is true for film like Mission impossible-- i.e. the Noc List was a disk that held the true identities of secret agents- the nature of the object of desire only serves to heighten the stakes and reveal character- it's simply a plot device. I do think Tarantino understood the tradition of the MacGuffin in filmmaking and was doing what he always does- paying homage to the greats and employing their craft artfully.

The briefcase represents the moviescreen itself (reflecting the pure light from the projector bulb). That's what I think since I rewatched Pulp Fiction quite recently. It makes sense because a moviescreen literally is a thing onto which things (or ideas) can be projected. @ 11:59 Pumpkin first looks at the moviescreen and right after that he looks down towards the briefcase, while he still aims his gun towards the moviescreen. In this way, Pumpkin physically shows the connection between the moviescreen and the briefcase (representing the moviescreen). Tarantino is having fun @ 02:37 because we all THINK he is having fun. But, actually he explains perfectly what's in the briefcase. Visually. At the right moment Tarantino wants to reveal what's in the briefcase, the 'filmreel' gets stuck. Right after that, the filmframe burns up due to the heat of the projector bulb. What remains is the naked movie screen, reflecting pure light. And that's what Tarantino is trying to communicate, in a funny way: the briefcase represents the moviescreen. We think we've just missed Tarantino's big revelation, because we don't associate the 'mechanical problems' with Tarantino's revelation. We don't see it as a continuum. Tarantino makes an interesting gesture @ 04:04 when he says "it applies to all of them". "All" in this case, refers to the moviescreen itself, which is all. (The camera even zooms out at this moment to emphasize that Tarantino is talking about the moviescreen/frame). Is this your interpretation too, Rob? (The 'orange fades' that cover the whole moviescreen, so we have an orange moviescreen that resembles the orange/golden moviescreen/rectangle inside the briefcase? The rectangular plaster on the back of Marsellus neck (close to the visual cortex) representing the (rectangular) shape of the moviescreen? The backwindow fades to red due to Marvin's blood, just like the moviescreen fades to orange? The Gold Watch meaning 'watching the gold'? While watching this video, I was thinking: Jesus Christ.. Rob.. come ON. These (moviescreen) examples are almost too obvious to ignore. Did you really make "the Meaning of the Monolith revealed" video? But then I saw how you ended the video. Also I read that you hadn't offered your interpretation in this video. That made quite some sense, actually. But, still I'm not sure what your interpretation is. So, your joke at the end, eventually wasn't a joke, but a reference to Tarantino's visual explanation what's actually in the briefcase? (sorry for my extensive comment)

Since sin City seems to take place in the same universe as the movie The Spirit, it's safe to say it's the Golden fleece worn by Hercules himself. In this video, enjoyable as it is, the term McGuffin is convolutedly defined. A McGuffin is simply an object/thing/device used in a movie to advance the plot. It doesn't have to be explained. It's just taken as a given that the people in the movie are interested in it, desire it, and take action to defend, run away with, or attempt to recapture it. The contents of the briefcase in Pulp Fiction is maybe the clearest example of it. Briefcase closed.

Glad to see this video because I, too, have long thought that the briefcase in PF is an homage "Raiders of The Lost Ark." And, incidentally, the reason I thought *that* is because the opening of the Ark in ROTLA seems to be an homage *itself* -- to the 1955 film noir "Kiss Me Deadly." The similarities between the opening of the briefcase in KMD and the opening of the Ark are obvious.

I think there are two anwers to this mystery. "What's in the briefcase is whatever you think it is" might mean that it is not important to the story what's in the briefcase, important is that the content of the briefcase is highly valued by everybody and everybody wants to possess it, so much even that they're willing to steal, lie and murder. The other answer goes into the spiritual direction. In the briefcase is light, a blinding spiritual light, everybody who looks into it is mesmerized by its beauty, but also endangered to go astray, like a lost sheep. It is said that people who see the light, meaning who think they've encountered God, are in danger to become arrogant, because they think to know who God is, even worse, come to a conclusion that they are God, and falsely think they're above everybody and everything. Jules gets this message, when the bullets pass through him by divine intervention. He immediately quits his job and wants to be the shepherd. He wants to serve God and guide misguided souls back to the right path, which is what he does in the diner café. Vincent doesn't get the message and gets killed. Also, at 2:05: left from Vincent's head, the curtain rod, or whatever that is, looks like Jesus on the cross to me.

I theorize what's inside the briefcase (money) acts as a metaphor... it's not meant to be literal. Money blinds money corrupts. The light/money is like a moth to a flame. It corrupts those who seek it/gaze upon it. It's essentially what has gotten every body in trouble throughout this movie. Jules decides he's simply going to wander the land... he essentially turns his back on money (and gives the money in his wallet to the thief).... Jules makes a point that he can't give him the suitcase because it doesn't belong to him, not because he wants it for himself. I doubt it's Marcel Wallace's soul, however money will corrupt you and take your soul....with the suitcase combo being 666.... selling your soul to Satan. It could also be Quentin Tarantino's money in the suitcase or the movie studio's... for the movie or for selling his soul to Hollywood?

Great breakdown, fun, especially the ending. One thing stuck out.. a "McGuffin" isn't necessarily a fake or empty or unknown thing.In fiction writing - I think it was shorthand from Alfred Hitchcock's creative team.. it's any plot device that is desired by the characters. McGuffins:The Maltese Falcon, The Ark, and Biff's ill-gotten sports stats book are examples, the Briefcase was a McGuffin because it was desired and drove the plot, albeit the desirability was implied. You videos are thoughtful and funny, great stuff.

gold also features in kill bill - the bride's yellow suit - and Django - his wife wearing the gold dress in his visions. It seems to be associated with something ideal - a person, a code, an act - maybe even a perverse ideal such as a perfect execution. Something stylized, more or less 'perfect', and therefore not exactly real except in our minds - maybe even something divine? It could be due to the influence of Kubrik, who was all over it with color-coding. (There's even a wine bottle with a yellow label and a some yellow oil behind travolta when he opens the case - that's total kubrik, to put in stuff like that might never be noticed, but gets in subconsciously))

Irving Rhames accidentally cut his head while shaving it and put a bandaid on it. Quentin liked it so much he decided to tell him to leave it on and even focused on it in the movie. It has nothing to do with any plot line or mystery within the movie. Quentin just has a unique and bizarre visual style when directing his movies and the bandaid on Marcel’s head fit his style.

Nothing in this video makes it any less believable that the briefcase contains Marcellus Soul compared to anything else. It's so light that it almost seems empty, the content is beautiful and eye catching. The lock code is 666. There's a low mysterious hum that can be heard every time it's opened. While transporting the briefcase back to it's rightful owner, Jules and Vincent are protected from the bullets and who is to say that the devil didn't save them witch makes Jules talk about who he represents in his Ezekiel 25:17 speech even deeper because he is at that point doing the work of the devil. And by the time Marcellus is raped and is "saved" by Butch, He has most likely had the soul restored since that sequence takes place after Jules and Vincent brought it back to the bar. Also, a band aid makes it look more recent than a healed scar would've. Or it was just full of McNuggets

it represents 'the end' of the movie (could also use the word 'answer'), and by synechdoche the concept of the end of any story. something that can only be invented and longed for, since stories don't really have an ultimate end. the film blurs actual time and chronological time, the common threads being something gold in a briefcase or a gold watch. and every story has conflict trying to be resolved, which is the base motivation of all characters. they are all longing for, and searching for an end to something. the film both begins and ends with the briefcase, in the early morning, which is a beginning, not an end. it is some sort of point of resolution for Wallace. or perhaps a threat to it, meaning an end to his story in a different way. it gets vega killed because he wouldn't have run into butch if he hadnt been dealiing with it that morning. the only main charcters who aren't directly effected by it is Mia, who has no connection to the briefcase, and very nearly meets her end, but ultimately doesn't. and butch, who also barely survives, and represents the chronological end of the film, riding off on a motorbike. his story is about a gold watch. he manages to retrieve it and achieves something of a resolution to his predicament, although its clear his old life is over. jules is the guardian of the briefcase, and states it isnt his, right after telling vega his intentions of wandering the earth, leaving his fate to God (he doesn't react to it like the others, and so his fate is left to the eternal). and the gold effect in the shooting links death, which is the (at least functional)end to anyones story, to the briefcase. gold is of course something you recieve at the end of something. a medal, a trophy, a payment, a star, treasure, heaven. it's also a deliberate point of discussion -- extending the movie's conversational life-span, asking us, when, if ever, does the movie end? and finding out the contents, would perhaps, be the closest thing to an 'end' of the wider pulp fiction story as is possible. the last mystery. it subtextually represents its own practical potential. 'are we happy? yeah we're happy' ... is that a chracter's 'happy ending'? would it be a happy ending for us to find out the contents of the briefcase? also consider vega dying in a bath room, after taking a shit, as thought suddenly cleansed of all the turmoil. and yes, i am indeed stoned.

It's Pride. Marcellus says so early in the film. Just my guess, but it's what all these men had in common (the 'pride' of our forefathers), it's the 'pride' of ownership, and it's 'pride' which goeth before a fall-- it's what makes 'having' so worth while portrayed as a viable essence or substratum. Many kill solely for 'pride.' Jules renounces his Pride, and lives. In Lacanian psychoanalysis, this is known as the 'barred subject' which cannot enter (directly) into discourse, and is described in literature through the figure of 'the anal father' or the male parent that refuses to renounce his own pleasure, a ribald character like Falstaff. It is also the 'sacred' which represents the limitation of the 'profane' world, where time turns into space and feces is transmuted into gold (as 'sacral' comes from the 'sacrum' or anal area), wherein something that is forbidden or taboo is elevated to a holy or divine status as described in the work of Claude Levi-Strauss where opposites ("binary oppositions") are joined together ("unification") in human though forming a myth. The purpose of the myth is to create the illusion or belief that irreconcilable differences in society are reconciled (such as that between master and slave, or man and woman, or between rich and poor). In this case (literally), what is in the briefcase allows all the criminal acts, especially murder, to be taken by employees of Marcellus Wallace without need of justification and with a cleansed conscience. They can appear to themselves and one another to have no qualms with their behavior because of the power of effectivity of the myth which I am describing as Pride. It functions like confession, divine providence, or self interest. In other words, it makes everything 'All Right'-- "Everything Is Awesome."
