Sailing Uma

Күн бұрын

In this step, we finally get to fix our bow pulpit thanks to Luis, our new hero! He picked us up, drove us back to San Juan and spent 2 days helping us put Uma's bow back together. With that done, it was time to weigh anchor and set sail for Culebra.
If you enjoyed this episode, please give it thumbs up, it helps us out a bunch :)

My new love/addiction is vintage tube equipment. I'm not a sailer any more, but I can still cuss with the best of them. But between the genuius engineering design and the Spielberg like editing... Your videos are somthing to behold. I learn things from the both of you that have not much to do with sailing, yet are inspirational to anyone attempting to lead a decent life. And the entertainment... Priceless. Thank you very much for sharing what you both do. :)

Don't bother fishing in less than a couple of hundred feet of water. Ain't no Barracuda out in the blue. Plus, because you can't attain normal trolling speeds (8 to 12 knots), use skirted lures with a fat head to generate a bubble stream. Live or dead bait are impractical in your situation but you can get some very good liquid scent in a bait shop to stink up your lures. It really helps. Your scent trail could stretch back a couple of hundred yards and Mahi, Tuna and such will follow the trail to your lure. This lets you cover a lot more water.

Dustless Blasting is telling you good. No cuda out deep blue. You can cut the cuda in strips and hook the strips on the lures he is describing. I have trolled with a cat fish as bait and caught fish. Trolling is more art. You could stop the boat if your depth finder shows hard bottom or a ledge or fish.

Yep. I don't know much about high sea fishing, nor tuna or barracuda but I think barracudas are patroling in near surface waters like bass but tuna are more bottom fish like Walleyes, but getting to the surface waters hunting in the morning. Try an old trick of mine when trolling: Do a wide 360˚ turn with, what 50 or 75 feet of line. Your lure will slow down and sink deeper tentalizing hunters. Always works with Walleyes.

Save yourself some trouble and just buy tiny dyneema for lazy-jacks. It's not strechy and it's VERY slippery. That's what you want for lazyjacks. I think in the end we paid about $65 for the dyneema for the lazy-jacks on our boat and the stuff slides past itself land the boom fairleeds iike butter.

I have jack lines on my boat and I love them. They keep the mainsail under control when short handed. I''m glad to heard and think its very smart of you to do a prototype with the cheap line and plan to replace it. I use this same type of line on my winter storage cover tie downs. I have get new almost every year. This HD stuff have no UV protection and even in the winter there is enough UV to deteriorate the line. In the tropics, I doubt they will last more than 3 months.

If you are fishing in shallow water close to shore as others have mentioned you will catch cudas. I wouldn't stop fishing because you can pick up grouper or amberjacks but you will need a lure that is a deeper diver. Use a wire leader so you don't lose your lures to cudas and don't use skirts because cudas will tear them up. At slower trolling speeds use a Rapala. Switch out the treble hooks for single hooks so it is easier to release the cudas when you catch them.

great video! about the baracuda problem: there are the obvious choices: try different lures, variation in depth ( by adding weight or special diving plates for fishing lures or just by using deep diving lures) and also longer lines, some fish are too cautious to attack a lure that's too close behind the boat. BUT....trolling is NOT your only option! why don't you guys start to set lines whenever you're at anchor? natural bait like squid (stays on the hook very well, my favourite!), shrimp, minnows and mussels work very well. check if you're allowed to use circle hooks where you are, the fish hooks itself and you can just leave the lines out. attach the hook to about 50 -150cm of strong carbon leader, then a swivel, then the main line with a sinker (weight and shape depending on the current, just make sure it can move freely on the main line). i find this way of fishing so much more exciting than trolling bc you can catch many more different species! another tipp i have, and it's not very novel either, is just to look at and ask what local fishermen do. fishing techniques and lures are different for every area and whatever i or someone else tells you here, might have worked for us but it doesn't necessarily work for you or where you are at the moment. locals know best! fish like underwater structures like rocks, cliffs, reefs etc.... they want to be able to hide and that's where they find food. if you find a place where the depth suddenly drops from like 5 m to 15 m or more, that's where you'll catch fish! and finally: catching a fish on a line is only one way to get food from the ocean, my experience is mainly based on the mediterranean sea but i know there are other options all around the globe! in areas where the water is clean you can collect clams from a cliff and they are delicious! i have seen people catch an octopus in a vase, with a chicken leg and i have caught many with a spear gun...you need to beat them on a rock so they become tender and you need to cook them for a long time (and the smell is not the best) but a salad made from boiled octopus is one of my favourite things in the world....my mouth is watering now. calamari (squid) are easy to catch in some areas, some smaller sorts of crabs make excellent soup or spaghetti sauce and some italian people (and i think asians as well) love to eat urchins.... don't limit yourself to just trolling, there's plenty more (fish) in the sea! and even if some pelagic species like bonito are not endangered, they face a lot of pressure...by broadening your menu you might help to take at least a little of that pressure off! have fun and good luck!

Hey Dan, As a partially disabled sailor, I can understand wanting a lighter weight motor. Although the 4 cycles are more desireable, I bought an older Mercury 3.3 hp motor that was in brand new condition. A friend of mine took it replaced the carb with a different carb (which he found instructions for on KZfaq) and shazam she's a 5 hp motor that only weights a very manageable 38 lbs. Since it's a smaller motor it has an internal fuel tank, once less thing in the boat and to go wrong. If I start the day with a full tank, I've never used more than a tank in a day and that's with the kids playing with it all day long. Although I like the idea of going old school and rigging a sail some times it's just nice to have a motor. Also with as light as your boat is a 3.3 or 5 hp motor should push it along just fine! I picked my motor up for 100.00 dollars. The previous owner bought it and decided he wanted a bigger motor so it sat in a garage winterized for 4 years with only "he says" less than 10 hours on it. It looks like show room floor condition so I feel I got a good deal. Good luck and thanks for another great video. I could watch you guys work on your boat all day long! You are definitely a cleaver couple and you both work so hard it just inspires me! So keep the videos coming we all love em!!! Bill S. s/v ODIN

I understand that you guys are like a couple of episodes ahead, but what you can do is when you catch a barracuda again; cut it up into a bucket, chum some of the water all the while utilizing some of the barracuda as bait on the end of your hook..... if that fails you guys will have to purchase a rubber squid looking bait hook. Shinny silver preferably.. Good look...

Cool video, as far as the barracuda it is the type of jig or hook on your line. Try to get a variety so you can switch it out to try different ones. If you have ever seen a commercial tuna boat they use jig poles to troll for fish. It is extremely effective way to find fish. Rather than using rod and real. I have thought this type of system could be used on a sail boat in a smaller form. It is very fast to retrieve the fish, with less chance of loosing it.
